Inheritance Considered Harmful (PDF)

Inheritance Considered Harmful (PDF) 01/14/2003 11:24 AM
It could also be argued that inheritance falls into the class of programming language features which are accepted and instigated without thorough analysis, only to be subsequently rejected when experience has shown them to be unhelpful. It would appear that encapsulation is more relevant and applicable than inheritance, and its benefits to the maintenance process are more obvious. In [12], it is suggested that in future systems, architectures based on aggregation will be more appropriate than those based on inheritance. This is particularly true of systems incorporating multiple inheritance whose structures have tended to be elaborately concocted... Lastly, contrary to what was originally thought, it may be that most OO systems are simply not amenable to the use of inheritance, and their functionality does not lend itself well to use of inheritance. -- Rachel Harrison and Steve Counsell

"tri" Not an easy article to read, but basicly it's saying complex inheritance trees (more than 3 levels in depth?) are difficult to maintain, and many designs use inheritance inappropriately. That is why the big thing in C# and Java today is generics, and why I was such a fan of templates in C++, even if the syntax was terrible. PHP has less need for generics because most of its operators and functions are polymorphic (thx to dynamic typing).

This database is a catalog of human genes and genetic disorders authored and edited by Dr. Victor A. McKusick and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins and elsewhere, and developed for the World Wide Web by NCBI, the National Center for Biotechnology Information. The database contains textual information and references. It also contains copious links to MEDLINE and sequence records in the Entrez system, and links to additional related resources at NCBI and elsewhere. You can do a search by entering one or more terms in the text box above. Advanced search options are accessible via the Limits, Preview/Index, History, and Clipboard options in the grey bar beneath the text box. The OMIM help document provides additional information and examples of basic and advanced searches. The links to the left provide further technical information, searching options, frequently asked questions (FAQ), and information on allied resources. To return to the page, click on the OMIM link in the black header bar or on the graphic at the top of any OMIM page. NOTE: OMIM is intended for use primarily by physicians and other professionals concerned with genetic disorders, by genetics researchers, and by advanced students in science and medicine. While the OMIM database is open to the public, users seeking information about a personal medical or genetic condition are urged to consult with a qualified physician for diagnosis and for answers to personal questions. This has been added to Biological Informatics Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Edible User Interfaces

Edible User Interfaces 04/18/2005 10:04 AM

taste_me_screen.jpgDan Maynes-Aminzade is working towards a simple goal we can all appreciate: edible user interfaces. One such device, called the BeanCounter, uses electronically controlled valves to dispense jelly beans based on memory usage or other statistics of up to six running processes at a time.

Quite possibly even better (and at the very least, dramatically less hygienic) is the TasteScreen: a system consisting of an LCD monitor with a specialized USB device mounted on top of it. The device contains twenty plastic flavor cartridges which drip controlled quantities of flavoring into a staging area where they're mixed and dispensed.

When dispensed, the flavoring chemicals drip down to coat the monitor with a thin liquid residue. A user can sample the dispensed flavor by touching his tongue to the computer screen. Certain combinations of flavoring agents recreate a flavor appropriate to the user’s task.
Perhaps if he dedicates one such chamber to a Windex solution, he'll have a viable product on his hands. Regardless, we can only hope that one day you'll finally be able to discover for yourself what Gizmodo really tastes like.

It's nice to see Evan getting in WYSIWYG editing in Blogger (it seems it's someone named Massless who did the work.) Let's hope that ALL Google products features such a thing.

Since I've recently switched to Moveable Type - I've gone backwards in my "ease-of-authoring" experience. Does ecto work on a PC? Are there other alternatives that can get me WYSIWYG editing?

And that includes the ability to simply copy text w/links and paste. This is really hassling me and slowing up mky blogging process.

03/24/2005 02:22 PM
David Pescovitz: My latest article for TheFeature is an interview with Nokia's "oracle" of concept development, Matt Jones, about tangible interfaces and embodied interactions.
TheFeature: Can you give a concrete example (of a tangible interface)?

Jones: We're looking at how touch can be used to execute a number of tasks or interactions so you don't have to switch contexts from the real world to the world inside the screen. For instance, one person could touch his device to someone else's and give them a "digital gift," to borrow a phrase from our old boss Marko Ahtisaari. That digital gift might be something as simple as a URL or a photo that I've taken of a moment we just shared.

TheFeature: Awww. That's sweet.

Jones: Well, I don't want to get too Hallmark about it. All joking aside though, the touch technology provides measurable quantitative differences in the efficiency by which people can complete that kind of task. In terms of the measurements that people wearing white coats take inside usability labs, touch technology could reduce the number of interactions required by an order of magnitude. To set up a swap over Bluetooth might take twenty or thirty clicks. This completes the interaction with one touch. Although, for security purposes, we also have a confirm button. There's something very human about giving someone a gift while looking them in the eye and touching the devices together instead of both people squirreling away in the interfaces trying to do the data exchange.

Computer Generated Papers Get Accepted
For Conference
04/11/2005 03:31 PM
In the last couple of months, I've started receiving requests addressed to Dr. Masnick asking me to submit papers to random and oddly named conferences. While there are a few Dr. Masnicks out there (some of whom are closely related), I've never made it that high up the academic food chain. I've been ignoring the emails assuming they were simply from confused individuals, but it seems like plenty of others have been receiving similar requests. One grad student at MIT got so fed up with the requests that he wrote a fake research paper generator and submitted some of the results -- which were accepted to these conferences. While the post linked from here suggests that the reviewers of the submissions aren't being very careful, you have to wonder if this is something of a scam -- like the various "Who's Who" books where they try to get people to buy these books that will just list anyone who pays.

It's interesting to me that The Guardian's article article about the soldier kidnapped in Iraq - the one who turns out to be a GI Joe action figure - refers readers to its blog for the details of the correction. Why the blog? Perhaps because the blog lets the Guardian talk in a less guarded, more human voice. If the correction were noted in the usual way, could the Guardian have written "Sick as they are, such hoaxes have happened before...," for example? It makes sense to me: Fallibility is the mark of humanity, and, oddly, it's one of the...
