05/29/2004 07:23 PMOne problem with this blog post. It treats the term
blogware - to mean lots of blogging tools, the catgeory of
blogging tools.
Well dude - get a clue. The term Blogware also refers to
the product from Tucows.
On
Choosing Blogware.
Owen Winkler created a Blog Software
Breakdown chart recently of the various options and features
associated with fourteen different install on your own
server weblogging environments. In Owens own words here
are some criteria for software he did not include as
potential contenders for this comprehensive chart:
I did not
include tools like Blogger or Six Apart thinks is best for me. I did
not include packages with desktop applications for the same
reasons.
I also did not include generic CMS software; only
blog-making software. This excludes software like Drupal and phpNuke.
Im sure you can make a great blog with this software, but there
are two things that I found in common the these packages: Either they
were too configurable (Drupal, Typo3), or they looked like one of
those h4x0r community sites. Cmon, you know what Im
talking about - phpNuke on phpBB. Theyre fine for keeping a
weblog, more community and file-service oriented.
Owen goes on to outline three deciding factors that most influenced
his final choicePretty GUI, Free, and Supportin great
detail in his Blogware Choice post.
And the winner isWordPress!
But, please read Owens comprehensive chart and blogware
choice criteria for the full story. Thanks to Lee LeFever

After putting in over a year's worth of work -- research,
designing, programming, testing and collecting feedback -- we are
proud to announce the official release of Blogware version 1.0!
Blogware is our dream weblogging tool, the answer to a question we
asked ourselves: "If we could make our ideal weblog software, what
would it be like?" The end result is a tool that we not only build,
but use every day in both our professional capacities and for personal
blogging.
Blogware has many features, including:
- A WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor built into its web
interface
- A built-in comments system that can notify you and your readers
via email whenecver a new comment is posted to a specific entry
- An advanced photo album system that allows you to bulk upload
photos as zip files and can resize them as it imports
- A category system that allows your to post your articles under one
or more categories
- A reader sign-on system that lets you assign reader permissions
for specific categories
- A built-in filesystem that can be used for storing files that can
be included in your articles, for plain HTML pages, or even just as a
place to back up or share your files
- Moblogging -- you can post articles or photos via email-enabled
handheld devices such as PDAs or cell phones
- All kinds of options for customizing the look and feel of your
weblog, including a layout manager that makes designing you blog's
layout as simple and dragging and dropping.
...and we're not done yet. We're constantly collecting feedback and
improving Blogware.
Blogware is available through a number of resellers, each offering
their own pricing plan and support package. If you'd like to find out
more, see this list of resellers to see which Blogware
offering is the right one for you!

Congrats to Ross, Joey and Elliot and the rest of the team
at Tucows!

05/15/2004 01:18 AMWell - if Chris Pirillo likes Blogware - then I guess it's a
hit!
Congrats to Ross and team!
Bl
ogWare 0wns!.
I've been through just about every major blog option out there -
MT, Blogger, GreyMatter, Radio UserLand, LiveJournal, etc. I must say,
even though the template structure within Lockergnome.net is complex,
this system is quite simple (at the same time). For novices, there's
virtually no learning curve. Though it's difficult for me to pinpoint
my favorite option, the "Edit This Entry" link is surprisingly handy!
The photoblog integration with e-mail posting capabilities works well,
too. Code purists won't appreciate the legacy tags, but (perhaps) one
day, I'll spend more time tweaking more than just the outward
appearance of this thing. Color me sold.

The Blogware business model
The Blogware business model
07/07/2004 02:41 AMI've been trying to get to know Roland Tanglao and Boris Mann and their company
Streamline. Here's
an interesting post I found on Roland's blog about Blogware's
business model..
Here's Roland......
A must read for prospective Blogware resellers and for
bloggers and people who don't understand why Blogware is not being
heavily promoted by Tucows. Summary: it's all about the resellers.
Resellers made Tucows #2 in domain registration and similarly
resellers will make Blogware a big player in the hosted blog
space.
From An
Open Letter to Blog Sceptic:
QUOTE
5/3/2/1. Ditch the
resellers/launch a hosted version/offer to specific verticals/promote
it...
Never gonna happen.
Here's why: Internet services providers represent the most
powerful distribution channel on the internet. No single company can
compete with the marketing muscle of 30,000 ISPs** who sit right in
front of end-users and assist them in making critical technology
choices and guide them as they dive into the internet - usually for
the first time. No other channel can put you in front of individuals
and the Fortune 500 simultaneously and no channel can better address
the fickle needs of their local markets in a more appropriate
fashion.
To get a better sense of this, take a look at our track record with
domain names. In 1997, we were (according to the most liberal
definitions) #85 in the domain name registration market. Today we are
solidly #2 and we've been there for a couple of years. How did we get
here? We dealt exclusively with internet services providers to the
exclusion of all other market opportunities and we nailed their
service requirements. By choosing and sticking to our distribution
model very early in the game (some would argue that it chose us) we
were able to focus on very specific attributes of our products and
processes and build some truly excellent structures around everything.
In other words, because we weren't trying to be all things to all
customers, we were able to do some very amazing things with some very
specific customer segments. And they responded in spades.
Our resellers kick serious a*s in the market place. This because
the Tucows way of doing things gives them the luxury of being able
to focus on very specific and important things. Think of every other
blogging company out there. They each have to a) be technical experts,
b) be sales experts and c) be marketing experts just to one unit to a
customer. Now take a look at the symbiotic nature of the relationship
between Tucows and its direct customers. Our resellers have to be
sales & marketing experts and develop strong customer service
skills and Tucows has to focus on maintaining world-class technical
services. Who would you bet on, the jack-of-all-trades or the team of
specialists?
The downside to this approach is that it lacks the glitz and glam
that retail oriented services employ. You will never see a full out PR
blitz from Tucows and Blogware will never be a household name. All
wasted money. Remember, we're not the marketing brains in this
relationship. We're the technical muscle.
Does that mean that our resellers are idly sitting by doing
nothing? Nope. Right now, they are working on developing the right
messages to direct at very specific markets - some are doing the
institutional angle, some are going after telecommunications firms,
others are targetting specific home-user verticals and others still
looking to make quick wins at the expense of those with existing
market share... And what I've seen so far looks great. Think of this
as true "end-to-end marketing" Marketing at the edges. Clue-train
compatible distribution. Teamwork. Focus. Whatever you call it, it
works.

rather, to put the blame in the right place, the 'clever' tricks that
emacs plays to get itself going break with depressing regularity when
anything inside the OS shifts around. (Part of the build process
actually core-dumps a running emacs and then fixes up the core file to

AT&T Says AT&T Wireless Broke Their

AT&T Says AT&T Wireless Broke Their
Brand
08/06/2004 06:45 PMIt never really made sense when AT&T spun out AT&T Wireless that they
let the mobile company keep the name. It was clearly very confusing
to customers who
still think they're the same company and it
was a clear risk to AT&T's brand -- as well as their ability to offer
their own wireless service at another point in the future. While it
was clear that AT&T was just trying to cash in on the hype around
wireless, the fact that they didn't realize that wireless had to be a
part of their future was a bit scary. Of course, among the many
things that did happen was that AT&T Wireless faltered and did,
indeed, harm the overall AT&T brand name. So, while they're in the
process of (maybe) selling out to Cingular, and AT&T wants the name
back, many are questioning
whether
that's a good idea. AT&T Wireless has such a weak reputation
right now that starting a new mobile phone service under that brand
may be an uphill battle. AT&T is now suggesting that
AT&T Wireless broke their
agreement by screwing up the brand and being so poor at customer
service. Right now, honestly, this looks more like a negotiating ploy
concerning the return of the name, because if the Cingular deal does
go through, then it shouldn't much matter any more if the old AT&T
Wireless can't use the name any more.

The Video Game That Broke Apart China
05/28/2004 03:20 PMWho said video games can't change the world? That seems to be the
fear of the Chinese government, who has
banned the video game "Hearts of Iron" for (they claim)
"distorting history and damaging China's sovereignty and territorial
integrity." To be honest, I don't know enough about the video game in
question or the specific complaints concerning Chinese history to
understand what their specific problems are (and the article is
somewhat vague), but, honestly, who could possibly feel threatened
that the events in a historical
video game could damage a
nation's sovereignty? If one little video game can damage both the
sovereignty and territorial integrity of a nation, you have to wonder
how strong those things are in the first place.

Cory's PopSci column: How Hollywood
broke DVD
12/29/2004 04:49 AM
Cory Doctorow:
I've begun writing a regular column for Popular Science magazine,
about technology and policy. The first one's just hit the stands,
called "Go Ask Hollywood: Why can't you back up your DVDs? Because
entertainment execs don't want you to."
They set up a cartel in 1995, now called the DVD Copy Control
Association (DVD-CCA), to dole out these licenses. Anyone making
players without one is breaking the law. A Fox Studios executive told
me, "It's a polite marketplace." Sure, if polite means stagnant.
Think of all the things you can do with a track from a CD now that you
couldn't do 10 years ago: rip it to your laptop, turn it into a ring
tone, send it to your friends, burn a mix. Many of these capabilities
are illegal, and the recording industry has tried to stop them all,
but they're out there, challenging the old rules and feeling their
place in the market. Innovators have tried to enable the same
flexibility for the DVD. Last year 321 Studios released software that
let you back up prerecorded DVDs, but the MPAA sued it into bankruptcy
before a court could rule on whether or not the product was legal.
Just last month, this magazine gave a Best of What's New award to a
$27,000 movie jukebox from Kaleidescape, praising the maker's efforts
to appease Hollywood by locking down content on the device so it can't
be shared. Kaleidescape thinks the product is within the boundaries of
its DVD-CCA license, but my Deep Throat on the cartel says the group
disagrees and is currently deciding how the company will be punished.
Penalties range from a stern warning to fines to lawsuits. (When I
called the DVD-CCA for an official line, I got this reply: "I've been
asked to tell you we have no comment." "Who asked you to tell me
that?" "I can't tell you.")
