Shot Across Atheros (and Others) Bow
Shot Across Atheros (and Others) Bow
07/19/2004 01:19 PMThis press release sounds obscure, but it's not: you can't call
yourself Wi-Fi if your proprietary add-on interferes with Wi-Fi
receivers: The Wi-Fi Alliance has taken action on the alleged
interference caused by Atheros Super G Turbo mode. Broadcom has stated
on many occasions and presented test results that they claim
demonstrate that the Turbo mode (which binds two radio channels to
produce a gross throughput of 108 Mbps an a net throughput in the
mid-30 Mbps) can dramatically drop the speed of nearby Wi-Fi networks
running 802.11b or 802.11g flavors. Atheros has consistently denied
that those tests reflect reality: they have said their own tests fail
to demonstrate this problem. Testing by Tim Higgins of Tom's
Networking showed most clearly that Broadcom's equipment was most
heavily affected by Atheros's Turbo mode, but only under limited,
close-range circumstances. Anecdotally, I've heard more and more
stories from home users finding their networks performing erratically,
but I have been unable to track down in those cases whether new nearby
networks--in apartment buildings or residential neighborhoods--were
the culprit, whether Atheros-based or otherwise. The Wi-Fi Alliance
had promised months ago to take up this issue, which is a touchy one,
given that Atheros and Broadcom are both members, and that most
chipmakers and consumer manufacturers are deploying a range of
proprietary and/or pre-standards extensions to Wi-Fi. Starting today,
if any extension impairs other Wi-Fi devices, the alliance can use its
trademark control to pull its branding. The alliance's director, Frank
Hanzlik, says in this press release, "If a product extension
significantly impacts the ability of other Wi-Fi CERTIFIED equipment
to operate as intended, the Alliance may withhold or revoke
certification." Interestingly, more devices are heading to market
without the Wi-Fi stamp, and with this latest tool, it might mean that
Wi-Fi becomes Balkanized--Atheros could opt out and potentially see no
problems with that decision. Some of its OEM partners already ship
Wi-Fi-trademark-free equipment....
Atheros on WAPI, 802.11n
Atheros on WAPI, 802.11n
02/01/2005 09:12 PM Atheros talks about WAPI, 802.11N, and standards: Atheros recently
announced that they would be the Wi-Fi chip supplier for Lenovo, the
Chinese firm that plans to take over IBM's personal computer division.
While that takeover may be temporarily held up due to politicking,
it's still likely to go through, and gives Atheros a foothold in a new
market. But this relationship reminded me of the WAPI (WLAN
Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure) debate last year in which
China was about to require this proprietary and closed security
standard in all domestically sold Wi-Fi adapters and equipment. After
high-level intervention by the U.S. government, China backed off from
the requirement. My objections to WAPI stemmed from its closed nature:
many in the encryption world believe that closed crypto is made to be
broken because it cannot be tested in a robust fashion. It's also
extremely easy to provide back doors, which can be used for government
monitoring as well as being themselves weak points of entry. The U.S.
government wanted explicit backdoors in encryption in the 1990s;
there's no reason China wouldn't want that right now. I had the chance
to speak to Atheros's Sheung Li, their product line manager, about
both the WAPI standard and the progress in Task Group N (802.11n), the
high throughput standard underway at IEEE as a successor to 802.11g.
The interview appears after the jump....
Atheros Files for IPO
Atheros Files for IPO
12/02/2003 12:32 AMChipmaker Atheros files paperwork to have a public stock offering:
News.com's Richard Shim reports that Atheros filed papers Nov. 26 to
raise about $100 million in an initial public offering. The company
had nearly $50 million in revenue in the first nine months of 2003
compared to $16.5 million in the same period last year, while that
period's losses this year were about $12 million versus $16 million
last year. Before Comdex, competitor Broadcom launched a broadside
against Atheros's chipsets with the Super G Turbo mode turned on for
108 Mbps speeds. While Broadcom says the complaint isn't directly
connected to Atheros, but rather with out-of-standards hardware in
general, Atheros is in the target because of it was well-known the
company was ready to launch its IPO....
Atheros Has Single Chip 802.11g
Atheros Has Single Chip 802.11g
01/26/2004 01:52 PMAtheros integrates 802.11g into a single CMOS chip, shipping 2nd
quarter: The company is already sampling its AR5005G chipset, which
comprises a single chip containing the Media Access Controller (the
part that handles digital network interaction), the baseband processor
(the part that handles converting analog to digital and the opposite),
and the 2.4 GHz radio. The company claims the same performance
characteristics as their multi-chip 802.11g solution, including
improvements in range. They also say that their WPA and 802.11i
encryption support can be used without a reduction in throughput. The
chip also features adaptive power use that selectively powers parts of
the chip as needed. This 802.11g design is another step in "Wi-Fi
everywhere," in which all business and consumer electronics include
Wi-Fi as a default fact, not an add-on at extra cost or only found in
special models. We'll be talking to the company later today; watch for
another report in the afternoon....

Atheros IPO Super Heated
Atheros IPO Super Heated
12/10/2003 01:11 AMOm Malik reports on Atheros's upcoming IPO: It's not hot, it's
superheated, with a sixfold oversubscription to the number of shares
potentially available at the initial public offering. Before the
recent surge in IPOs, Atheros would have been a takeover target; now
it's valuing itself in the open market, which could dramatically raise
its asking price for a company trying to get a wedge into
manufacturing 802.11a and a/g chipsets. This should also, by the way,
be an interested test of the post-dotcom IPO market in which shares
were distributed to favored parties who would turn them quickly, and
those who bought in on day one were disappointed on day two through
infinity. With new rules and watchdogs watching, I'll be curious to
see if Atheros's price rises. A good IPO should see the stock priced
correctly: its opening price shouldn't be too much higher than the IPO
price, or the company left money on the table....

05/03/2004 12:11 PMOrangeWare offers $15 driver to Mac users to pick up extra speed: We

similar devices. A free trial version is available for download. The
driver lists support for a couple dozen cards (PC Cards and PCI cards)
and works with Mac OS X 10.2 or later. These cards are typically less
than $50 or even as low as $30, while an internal AirPort Extreme
Card--if available for a given model--is $100. The driver only shows

11/14/2003 08:43 PMBroadcom says that Atheros's 108 Mbps mode in its Super G featureset
found in NetGear and D-Link devices significantly degrades nearby
network performance across the entire 2.4 GHz band: Associate Editor
Nancy Gohring and I filed this breaking news for PC World's online
news site today. The allegations by Broadcom could shake the consumer
industry slightly. We wrote this story now because Broadcom plans to
demonstrate their findings at Comdex next week, and we felt this was
the right time to provide the context we'd be been researching all
week for the story. If the methodology Broadcom used to conduct the
tests is reproducible -- they claim these tests show that Atheros's
products have a large negative impact on 802.11b and 802.11g networks
-- then D-Link, NetGear, and Atheros will need to issue firmware
upgrades, disable the mode, or recall equipment. Equally problematic:
if Broadcom's claims are not reproducible or their testing methods and
assumptions are faulty, they've gone a long distance out of their way
to make themselves look unreasonable. You might wonder why Nancy and I
filed for PC World instead of breaking this news directly at this
site. When Broadcom first briefed me on this problem on Monday of this
week, I turned to the PC World editor who had recently assembled an
exhaustive coverage section on 802.11g access points and their
configuration and compatibility. That set of articles showed that many
current 802.11g devices still have bugs to be worked out. In
discussions with the reviews editor and the online news editor at PC
World, we talked about how best this story could be written without
being either speculative or sensationalist. Their advice and
willingness to act as touchstones in our reporting made it clear that
we should work with them on the story. They vetted this through their
network experts as well to confirm that the technical details were
right. I had and have a lot of trepidation about this story. We don't
want to seem naive and give credence to a claim that's scientifically
provable and which I've seen the results of but not the process until
we know that it's reproducible. But given that this is about to go
prime time, as it were, we all felt it was the right point to provide
as much background as possible to root Broadcom's claims and Atheros's
rebuttal in reality....
