Soros American Supremacy Iraq 03/13/2003 10:25 AM
The bubble of American supremacy by George Soros "I see parallels between the Bush administration's pursuit of American supremacy and a boom-bust process or bubble in the stock market. Bubbles do not arise out of thin air. They have a solid basis in reality, but misconception distorts reality. Here, the dominant position of the United States is the reality, the pursuit of American supremacy the misconception." (From Drudge)

An excellent article by George Soros, The bubble of American supremacy, on why the world is not supporting Bush's war to remove the tyrant Saddam Hussein. "The problem is that the world is allergic to the Bush doctrine ...(1) The United States will do everything in its power to maintain its unquestioned military supremacy; and (2) the United States arrogates the right to preemptive action. ... the Bush doctrine is not stated starkly; it is buried in Orwellian doublespeak. The doublespeak is needed because the doctrine contradicts American values. " Very highly recommended. Via Dave Farber's IP list....

Aussie Upstart Challenges Microsoft for
Internet Desktop Supremacy
03/31/2005 03:31 AM
“The Kangaroo Challenge is on”, Hughes says. WOWdesk, a product of the well-established Australian, Adapt IT firm has audaciously challenged not only Microsoft, but Yahoo and Google, and for that matter, every internet power that exists for ‘Internet Desktop Supremacy’. An ‘Internet Desktop’ is a new term for a place on the web where you can manage all your personal and even business data. Even though WOWdesk is relatively new, Adapt IT is not. They have been in the Internet business since 1995 and have some impressive credentials, like web-enabling the Australian Navy. [PRWEB Mar 31, 2005]

Rael recently noted a shift among Unix folk in pinging google.com instead of yahoo.com when checking for network availability: It's not, mind you, that yahoo.com has become unreachable or unstable; just the Google has so come to represent the very essence of stability and reachability that it's made its way to our every ping. While Google rules the ping space, Yahoo is still tops of the Web in terms of...

samsung_m40.jpg image

Along with more pictures of the attractive Mac-like LLUON All In One PC we talked about a couple of days ago, SorobanGeeks has pictures of Samsung's new Powerbook-looking M40, a Pentium M-based machine with a 17-inch widescreen (and what looks to be an aluminum case). I guess at least a couple of Korean companies think Apple is a good place to cop designs. Seeing their results, I can't say I disagree.

Samsung SGH-X810 06/17/2005 06:12 PM

communicasia_164.jpgAnother day, another Samsung phone. The SGH-X810 is a MP3 phone with an iPod-like scroll wheel and a nice color screen. Specs are standard yet still drool-inducing: tri-band GPRS support, MPEG4 video recording, 1.3 megapixel stills with flash, and MP3 / AAC / AAC+ support.

AAC... hmmm... it's almost as if someone out there really likes iTunes. Maybe they'll add CONNECT and WMA support eventually, but probably not.

samsung_oled.jpg imageSamsung, who is showing off this new "world's largest" 21-inch OLED display, has also announced their products that are to be shown at this year's CES. While we'll definitely dig in with some more details throughout the week, there's some appetizing bits in there already—I'd be happy to include a 57-inch LCD or a 67-inch 1080p DLP HD televisions in my "things to steal from CES" list.

Check it out after the jump.

Samsung Digimax i50 MP3 06/24/2005 04:01 PM

samsung_didigmaxmafs.jpgThe nearly-flat camera is the hottest new form factor, for certain (think FujiFilm Z1, Sony DSC-T7, Casio Whatever), and Samsung is not staying out of the game, this time upgrading their older model to produce the i50 MP3. As you can guess, this five-megapixel sidearm is not only a pocket-ready camera, but also will support MP3 playback from SD and MMC cards—sounds great to me. Details are scant at the moment, but LetsGoDigital has some inital info (and really, until someone gets a hands-on, there's not that much more you really need to know).

yepp_ypc-c1.jpgSamsung has new models of their Yepp flash-based MP3 players out, the YPC-C1 and the YP-F1. Neither models are terribly inspiring, but then again, what flash players are these days? Both models support WMA (and the bulbous YP-F1 will do OGG Vorbis, too) and are available in sizes up to 2GB, as well as all the recording and FM radio capabilities flash-players have been capable of for years.

sgh-d600-3.jpgSamsung seemingly manages to release a new phone every three days. The SGH-D600 is the newest gem. At first look, the two megapixel camera with expandable memory definitely looks nice, but the expandable memory is in the unusual Transflash format. This phone does have a large 320x240 LCD display and most of the standard dosh that comes along with with a nice cellie including flash, Bluetooth, not to mention a flip out keypad.

Samsung Q30 Notebook Reviewed

Samsung Q30 Notebook Reviewed 01/03/2005 08:07 AM

samsung_q30.jpg imageSony's VAIO X505 laptop may be slightly smaller than the new Samsung Q30, but I know which one I'd rather have: the one that doesn't require me to carry external Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and memory card reader adapters to squeeze out that slimline package. The Q30 does have an external DVD drive, but considering how infrequently I use the optical drive on my laptop anyway, I'm fine with that. The Q30's 12-inch screen has a 1,280 by 768 pixel resolution, which is nice, although the Achilles' Heel for some may be the laptop's lack of a PC Card slot (something the X505 not only has, but relies on).

The unit Trusted Reviews got their hands on is a Korean import, but Samsung is planning to release the device at least in the UK, if not the USA (I'm fairly positive we're getting it).

digimaxv700.jpg imageSamsung won't be satisfied until they've dipped a toe in every gadget pond, it seems. Their new Digimax V700 aims at this year's consumer camera target with a 7-megapixel sensor and 3x optical zoom for less than $500 (and probably far less than that soon after launch). Available in three colors, the V700 should be out as soon as 'now' (although I'd wait for a proper review before picking one up. Consumer cameras in this class can vary wildly in quality).
