Palms, Pocket PCs and innovation
12/04/2003 02:27 PMThis has been tackled before (and certainly will be again), but
Stephen Wildstrom explains why we've been seeing so much innovation
with Palms lately (the Tapwave Zodiac, the Sony Clie UX50, the Treo
600) while Pocket PCs remain largely uniform. We do know that
Microsoft is supposed to be loosening up a bit and letting
manufacturers take more risks with Pocket PC design, but it's
certainly taking a while to see some results. Read...

Sync Buddy 2.0.1 Syncs Palms and
Mac OS X -- Back in the early days of the PalmPilot, Florent
Pillet released Palm Buddy (later renamed Sync Buddy), a Mac OS
program for backing up data from a Palm OS handheld by opening an
active connection between the two machines. Now, Pillet has rewritten
Sync Buddy for Mac OS X. Sync Buddy 2.0.1 can back up handhelds via
USB, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi connections. It also lets you install files
and transfer photos, as well as copy files to removable media such as
SD cards. The utility is compatible with Hot Sync Manager (which Palm
Desktop uses to synchronize data) and Mark/Space's The Missing Sync
software, automatically disabling them while Sync Buddy is running,
and re-enabling them when it's done. Sync Buddy 2.0.1 costs $25, and
is available as a 4.3 MB download. [JLC]

Super Shuffle
Super Shuffle
07/14/2004 06:35 PMInteresting
idea from Manuel Amador over on OSNews as to how music players
could better decide the next song to play:
You see, Shuffle is very good at helping you find
previously unheard songs, but it's rather bad at selecting the most
appropriate song for your current mood. Shuffle can do wonders with a
small list of songs, but small lists of songs means you do not get to
experience songs which aren't on the playlist. This means you have to
either create lists (strategy 1, anyone?), or to interrupt your
business every two or three minutes, maybe seven out of ten times.
I bet you have noticed this as well. Lots of music gives you wide
variety, but does not guarantee enjoyment.
The basic idea is that music players could learn that song A sounds
good after song B based on whether or not you 'Next Track'ed it before
it played for very long. That's something I always thought would be a
great feature, but Manuel has thought it out right down to the
pseudocode.
It's interesting how sometimes the design of the smallest feature
of an app can make the difference between 'fantastic app' and
'ho-hum'.

Watching BitTorrents Fly By

Now you can find out what torrents are available at Torrentz.com (via Robert
Scoble). Interesting thing is that, nstead of using
spiderbots, they are
using people as bots, meaning users register torrents streams they
either own or found.
Is it working? You bet.
What's available? Rips of all kinds including movies, porns,
music, toons, appz,
warez. For example, one of the most popular torrent is Adobe
Photoshop CS 8.0.
I am sure RIAA will be chasing those torrents soon if not already,
but I am not sure
if Torrentz.com itself is illegal or not.
There is a bit of drama behind the site too. Apparently, some
joker hacked the
site to steal the source code and setup his own site, TorrentReactor.net,
with minimal changes. The guy even admits he stole the
code. I guess he
thought stealing from someone who encourages theft is not really
stealing.
It's a dog eat dog world out there.

The Day The Earth Froze
The Day The Earth Froze
09/12/2004 05:51 PM
I've been watching the 1980s TV serial adaptation of the Kalevala,
Rauta-aika [Iron Age], being shown in 4 parts on Tuesdays on YLE2.
I've never really liked adaptations which may be due to having been
forced to sit through a torturous production of Shakespeare's Much
Ado About Nothing that was set on a tennis court and featured
something I could only describe as valley girls with big hair and
bubble gum. The actors were lucky we didn't start throwing things and
booing. Rauta-aika isn't all that bad even though the actors speak
prose and some of the costumes are pretty over the top. A few days ago
I mentioned the show to Chip Salzenberg, the human movie quote
database, who immediately asked, "The Day the Earth Froze?" No, the
Kalevala, not some bad sci-fi flick. As it happens, Chip and Jeff Goff
are MST3K devotees who provided me with the MST3K episode featuring
the absurdly bad The
Day the Earth Froze which, in spite of the misleading title,
is a 1959 movie of the Kalevala.
The movie was titled Sampo everywhere else but the US without
explanation as to who thought the B-movie sci-fi title would be a
brilliant replacement. The US version is also about 30 minutes shorter
although, judging by what wasn't cut, it likely was an act of mercy.
The Ministry of Culture in the then USSR apparently funded and
commissioned this entertainment bomb for some deeply mysterious
reason. The US version changes many the Russian and Finnish names to
sound, presumably, less like commies and the opening credits manage to
misspell Lönnrot's name. The MST3K guys often mock the Swedish in the
episode but I think the Finns wouldn't bother to correct them and let
the Swedes take all the credit for this total suckfest. The English
dubbing over the original Russian is spectacularly bad, too, as I
guess no one bothered to ask how the Finnish words and names were
pronounced and, after a while, I think they just started making shit
up. One of the more hilarious moments of heckling is when Crow makes
fun of the actress who plays Louhi by saying, "Marty Feldman in a role
that won't surprise you!" :)
It was good for a laugh but it was like watching a Paris Hilton
version of Walden Pond set in a luxury tourist resort where you
begin to wonder if you haven't slipped into a parallel and alternate
reality. It's a pity that no one has actually done a full movie
production of the Kalevala or a film of the people who kept the
stories alive before they were finally collected by Lönnrot and
written down. I think even a low-budget "Blair Witch" style Kalevala
movie would suck less than this movie does. I have a new appreciation
for Rauta-aika now. :)

09/27/2004 09:04 AM
Okay, it would seem we have a serious problem. I love
flash drives as much as the next guy (I use them when I need to, sure,
but only when necessary), but when one of our nation's most precious
resources - college football players - start shoplifting from
Wal-Marts just to feed their portable data addition, well... something
has to be done.
According to Durham County court records,
he is accused of stealing "an assortment of jump drives" -- portable
data storage units that plug into PCs -- Sept. 12 at Wal-Mart at New
Hope Commons in Durham. The computer equipment was valued at
$374.49.
We
need college football, and if these "jump drives" (known on
the street as 'flash,' 'hotplug,' and 'taking the D train') are going
to affect our young mens' ability to play ball, I say we ban them as
soon as possible before we wake up to a society plagued by thousands
of "pluggies."
Also, isn't calling this kid a punter a little over the top? He has
a disease; show a little respect. (Thanks, Joe!)
