Kano Technologies Corp. is using Macworld Conference & Expo to introduce their new dual-format portable SLIM DVD drive, which writes at 4x speeds and is .75 inch thick while weighing less than a pound. It sports both USB 2.0 and FireWire ports. The company will also show off their recently announced K8XTREME dual-format external FireWire DVD drive -- which writes DVD +/-R at 8x speeds and DVD +/-RW at 4x speeds, with 32x16x40 for CD-R -- as well as their complete line of FireWire 800 external hard drives at booth #722 in Moscone Center.

Kano Technologies announced on Tuesday the release of the SureFIRE800, a small external hard drive that, at .75 by 3.25 by 5.25 inches, is slightly bigger than Apple's iPod. The SureFIRE800 features up to 80GB of storage, FireWire 400/800 and USB 2.0 connectivity and a copy of Dantz Retrospect Express backup software. Pricing for the 20GB, 40GB, 60GB and 80GB models is US$249, $289, $339 and $399, respectively. System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.1.2, 16MB RAM (24MB recommended) and 100MB free hard drive space.

Ranging from 160GB to 400GB capacities, the SUGOI DISKs are housed in aluminum. The drives also include a "port bracket" for connecting to both serial ATA interface and power. Iomega Corp. on Wednesday added two new series of hard drives to its line-up: a new Iomega Portable Hard Drive in capacities as high as 100GB and the External Hard Drive Silver Series, with as much as 250GB of storage. The diminutive Iomega Portable Hard Drive draws power over a USB 2.0 port and uses a 2.5-inch disk that spins at 4200rpm. It comes with Iomega Automatic Backup and MusicMatch Jukebox software and is compatible with all versions of Mac OS X. 40GB (US$119.95), 60GB ($149.95) and 80GB ($199.95) capacities are available now while the 100GB ($299.95) version will ship during the second quarter.

Addonics Technologies on Tuesday introduced a US$29 SATA - IDE/ATAPI converter that converts Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives or SATA-based optical storage devices to standard IDE interface storage devices that can communicate with a Mac or PC using external USB or FireWire interfaces. Kano Technologies introduced its new X-spand tower storage system on Thursday. Offering up to 1TB of space, X-spand comes with two or four hard drive bays and features a FireWire 800 port that can throttle down to FireWire 400 speeds. Each of the hot-pluggable bays requires no cables and accommodates a Western Digital 3.5-inch IDE drive that can slide in and out to increase the storage capacity; each features an independent FireWire volume. X-spand ships with Dantz Retrospect Express 6.0 backup software. Pricing for the two-bay version is US$455 for 160GB of storage, $499 for 240GB and $799 for 500GB, while the four-bay model is $835 for 320GB, $950 for 480GB and $1,545 for 1TB.

LaCie announced on Monday the release of Bigger Disk Extreme, a new addition to its Extreme line of external hard drives that features up to 1.6TB of storage capacity and transfers data as fast as 85MB per second. Bigger Disk Extreme sports three FireWire ports, two 800 and one 400, with a built-in RAID 0 configuration. The drives will ship during the summer with a FireWire 800 cable and two FireWire 400 cables -- one 6-to-6 pin and one 6-to-4 pin, -- as well as SilverKeeper backup software and an included drive stand for upright use. Pricing will be US$1,199 for the 1TB model and $2,199 for the 1.6TB drive.

Peripheral Enhancements Corp. has announced the addition of new three 3.5-inch portable hard drives to the company's line of DiskGO! products, which until now consisted of USB flash drives. The new hard disks feature brushed aluminum casing and come in 80GB, 120GB and 250GB capacities. They connect to a USB 2.0 or FireWire port and ship with cables for both, along with a desktop stand and a power cord.
