06/21/2004 06:19 AM
Good morning,
sunshines. If we were rising from our beds, blearily walking into the
kitchen in search of coffee, I would make you oatmeal in this Sunbeam
Microwave while listening to its in-built FM radio; perhaps a song
about the hope of a new day. Then, after I had gone to work (in the
next room), you could listen to the messages I had left for you on the
microwave's integrated voice recorder. Messages like, "I have removed
the shielding from this oven. The uneasy feeling you feel inside is
the pinging and popping of your boiling liver. Also, this instrument
of your utter destruction was a relative value at $90." (Thanks,
Dennis!)

Voice Over Wi-Fi: Coming to a Home Near
You
08/27/2004 01:31 PMVonage and Netgear are reportedly working together on voice over Wi-Fi
products: They should be making an announcement on Monday, hopefully
with some more details. Voice over Wi-Fi could lead to a major shift
in the way voice services are delivered to homes. Voice over IP is
already growing in popularity, but a package that comes from two big
names like Vonage and Netgear, both with an existing presence in the
home, could encourage a significant uptake of voice over broadband
users. I'm curious about what kind of client device to expect. The
most ideal solution would be a simple handset that looks and operates
like a regular cordless phone. Ultimately a converged cellular/Wi-Fi
handset would be ideal but for now that service is too complicated--it
would have to be bundled with a cell phone service and it might not
work in all public hotspots which could make the service appear weak
to initial users....

08/27/2004 02:02 PMUntil recently, iPods could receive information only from a computer
-- contacts, calendars, and MP3 files all had to be imported. Now the
iPod can be used as a recording device, too, for directly storing and
playing back audio. You're not going to want to record your band's
demo on your iPod, but if you want to capture close-range interviews
or voice memos, the Belkin Voice Recorder for iPod and the Griffin
Technology iTalk iPod Voice Recorder can get the job done. In the end,
though, the Griffin is our pick, thanks to its better sound quality.

SightLight, a FireWire-based light for

Besides a stunning design, the iTalk features a built-in microphone
design to record sound up to 100 feet away, automatic gain control to
adjust recording levels, and a built-in speaker for easy and instant
playback. The iTalk will be released in April and will retail for $40.
The SightLight is a FireWire-based lighting add-on designed to work
with the iSight camera. It slips over the end of the iSight and
illuminates the camera's subject to compensate for low-light rooms. It
also gives a warmer, more natural appearance to the camera subject. It
has 3 settings, on, off, and auto, which automatically adjusts for the

Yeah, that probably got your attention. But thanks to event sponsors

to do to win? All you have to do is show up with your iPod, connect it
