Web-Based Information Retrieval Support Systems (WIRSS): Building Research Tools for Scientists in the New Information Age
http://www 2.cs.uregina.ca/~jtyao/Papers/Web_WI03.pdf

Abstract:

The concept of Web-based Information Retrieval Support Systems (WIRSS) is introduced. The needs for WIRSS are shown by a detailed case study of existing research article indexing and citation analysis systems, such as Curent Content, DBLP, Science Citation Index and CiteSeer. The objective of WIRSS is to build new and effective research tools for scientists to access, explore and use information on the Web, which may lead to improved research productivity and quality.

http://www.ir-ware.biz/

This web site provides links to information retrieval software. You will find links to search engines to search the web, site search engines, local drives, or local area networks. They provide links to web sites with related subjects, to Internet search engines, web directories, and to online publications on information retrieval. You will find more than 3,000 links in their directory. There are lots of search utilities to discover on the web. You can find all kinds of software to search a site, often written in PERL, JAVA, or JavaScript. There are also web robots or web spiders which can be used to search the web, but also to search a local area network or a local hard drive. This has been added to Directory Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. This will be added to the search engines section of the Internet MiniGuides.

Corpus Structure, Language Models, and Ad Hoc Information Retrieval by Oren Kurland and Lillian Lee
http: //eprints.osti.gov/cgi-bin/dexpldcgi?qry1131250613;1

Abstract by Authors:
Most previous work on the recently developed language-modeling approach to information retrieval focuses on document-specific characteristics, and therefore does not take into account the structure of the surrounding corpus. We propose a novel algorithmic framework in which information provided by document-based language models is enhanced by the incorporation of information drawn from clusters of similar documents. Using this framework, we develop a suite of new algorithms. Even the simplest typically outperforms the standard language-modeling approach in precision and recall, and our new interpolation algorithm posts statistically significant improvements for both metrics over all three corpora tested.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology crosses many disciplines in research and encompasses a wide range of applications. The technology can be integrated with a system that combines aerial (or satellite) photography, census figures, crime statistics and other information and then overlaid on a highly-detailed interactive map. This Topic in Depth covers some of the current uses of GIS and resources for learning more about the technology.

City governments have found various uses for GIS technology, (1) including helping firefighters avoid closed roads when navigating through New York City. Moving even beyond Earth, GIS was also used to gather planetary geography and geographic characteristics in the rover mission to Mars (2). Visitors to this website can learn more about Martian GIS and visualization tools and find image viewers for the advanced and beginner users of GIS that allow you to get a closer look at Mars, Venus, the moon, or your hometown here on earth. The Earth Satellite Corporation (3) provides this overview of some applications for satellite imagery combined with GIS technology. This website, Your Internet Guide to Geographical Information Systems (4), provides general information on GIS, sample images, and ways to get software, training and data. To gain some perspective on the expansion of GIS, the GISlounge provides links to where you can learn more about the history of GIS (5), and describes the history project, which includes a "critical history" that asks the question, "What were the precursors and ways of understanding the world that provided the conditions of possibility for GIS to emerge in the forms that did?" To give you a better sense of the rapid growth that has occurred in the field of geographic information and steps being taken to ensure that a coherent view emerges, visit this website of the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS)(6) [From The NSDL Scout Report for Math, Engineering, and Technology, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2003. http://scout.wisc.edu/]

Modelling and Mining of Network Information Systems

A library, no matter how vast, is limited by the efficiency of its cataloguing and searching system. So it is with the World Wide Web. With the emergence of the Web as the pre-emininent information storage and retrieval system, the need for better organization and searching systems has become pressing. Between the pin-prick of desire for information and the fruition of a screen full of relevant links lies the latency of intelligent web search. We are getting used to seeing the world through the Web; the time has come to see every world as a web. Every collection of interlinked data (a networked information space) can be organized and searched like the Web. Networks of phone calls, networks of financial transactions, networks of social interactions can all be analyzed by the techniques used for the Web.

The secret to successfully searching the web has been known to the builders of better search engines. On the web, as in other networked information spaces, the required information about the information lies in the link structure. Understanding this link structure mathematically and being able to translate this knowledge into applications is the point of this project. The theorems, tools and techniques of graph theory are at our disposal. This has been added to Deep Web Research Subject Tracer™ Information Blog and Bot Research Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

In the wards and in the labs of cash-strapped rural hospitals, non-proprietary software is quietly making its presence felt.
