Apple's miniPod -- too little for too

Apple's miniPod -- too little for too
much
01/07/2004 06:08 PM
Alex Salkever of Business Week humorously sums up what many people think about the new miniPod: "Far less capacity in a slightly smaller device for nearly the same cost? Sorry, Steve, this tune is off key."
SMALLER BUT WIMPIER.  Less music in a device marginally smaller at about the same price. Get it? I didn't, and few others will, either. In fact, while I was watching Jobs give his spiel, my mind replayed the infamous scene from the cult classic mockumentary Spinal Tap where the dim rock band tries to explain that dials on their amplifiers go to 11 -- and that's what makes them louder. I was left with the same sense of befuddlement after watching Jobs show off the smaller but much wimpier miniPod.

A few words while I switch the designs
around...

Wow. Ouch. So there we go. I've redesigned the site and I'm struggling to get it all up and working properly as soon as I possibly can, but there are scratchy bits and clunky bits and I swear to got that I'm getting to those bits in a minute. This redesign has been a long time coming - and like so many of my personal bits of work, was actually accomplished only because I suddenly developed enough momentum on a Sunday afternoon to get it to a nearly thought-through stage before something else got in the way. So it has all of the features of things that come together in that way - I think it's pretty inspired (for something I'd do), while simultaneously it's full of rough bits that haven't been polished out of existence yet.

I've been trying to think around my aesthetic and my reasons for going in this direction, but to be honest it's a whole mix of things coming together at one point in time. There's a bit of my general frustration with people doing things that seem to me to be working in opposition to the media, there's a dash of my desire to keep refining an artificial/manufactured aesthetic for plasticbag.org and there's a large stinking block of trying to strip away all the guff that has accumulated around my site over the last few years.

Weirdly, I think I'm also secretly hoping that by going so stark that people find the site intimidating and unfriendly. I've written before about how hard I find it to write when everyone's watching. That feeling got a little worse than normal after the whole wonderful Bloggies win. Maybe subconsciously this is an attempt to try and keep a very particular crowd around here while alienating everyone else. Maybe it's not so subconscious. Dunno. I guess we'll see how people respond to it over the next few days / weeks / years.

Anyway, in the meantime, I'll endeavour to get as much as possible (if not everything) fixed that appears currently to be broken in the next couple of hours, and maybe tomorrow I'll try and give you guys a tour through some of my thinking. First redesign in a very very long time... Quite exciting...

Evolved antenna designs

Evolved antenna designs 06/28/2004 11:35 AM
This antenna (and may others on the linked page) was evolved by NASA using a genetic algorithm. While highly effective, its design is counter-intuitive.
First, there is the potential of needing less power. Antenna ST5-3-10 achieves high gain (2-4dB) across a wider range of elevation angles. This allows a broader range of angles over which maximum data throughput can be achieved. Also, less power from the solar array and batteries may be required.

Second, the evolved antenna does not require a matching network nor a phasing circuit, removing two steps in design and fabrication of the antenna. A trivial transmission line may be used for the match on the flight antenna, but simulation results suggest that one is not required.

Third, the evolved antenna has more uniform coverage in that it has a uniform pattern with small ripples in the elevations of greatest interest (between 40 and 80 degrees). This allows for reliable performance as elevation angle relative to the ground changes.

Casemods from classic industrial designs

Casemods from classic industrial designs 07/11/2004 01:34 PM
"Bootleg Objects" is a casemod project that starts with design classics like this 1973 Bang & Olafsen tape-deck, Technics turntables, etc, and builds PCs and displays into them ("In the series of the Bootleg Objects, the BO.02 is a representative of the era of the music cassette. However, the cassette slot now houses a smart card reader. Further, a DVD-drive is hidden behind a previously unused groove in the front panel, and a 16:9 TFT display has joined the object on the sly. The legendary slider control formerly used to control the radio tuning now becomes both a display and controller for a whole slew of functions. Consequently, instead of 'tuning' the label now reads 'anything'.") Link (Thanks, Dan!)

Microsoft Designs Your Digital World

Microsoft Designs Your Digital World 12/08/2003 11:36 AM
Microsoft's "seamless computing" vision is about making software and devices work in sync with consumers' lives, John O'Rourke, consumer strategy director at Microsoft, says. Electronics stores have aisle after aisle of new technology gadgets coming to market every day. Think media players, PDAs, smart phones, smart watches, and Windows Media Center PCs. Microsoft's software is in a large number of those products, all of which are part of what O'Rourke calls the "digital lifestyle."

archos_av420.jpg imagePCMag checks in with a mostly positive review of the Archos AV420 Pocket Video Recorder, marred only by the public acknowledgement that the only DVD they could find in John Dvorak's office was a well-worn copy of Top Gun. I mean, they don't say that, exactly, but I think we can all safely infer from the picture that most of his columns are written with the Ride Into The Danger Zone scene playing over and over in the background.

It explains so much, really.

Review: Wordpress 1.5 03/17/2005 03:42 AM
There are almost as many blogging tools out there as there are bloggers. In addition to closed source vendors such as Movable Type and Blogger, big players are entering the field, including Microsoft with its MSN Spaces offering and the lesser-known .Text ASP.net toolkit. But even among both these, and the vast array of open source blogging tools, Wordpress rises above the others for being open source as it should be done.

Treo 600 Review

Treo 600 Review 01/05/2004 01:08 AM

I've finally gotten around to posting about my experiences with the Treo 600 in an essay called Life in the Treo Lane. The great thing about this device is that it confirms most of what I've been writing about for the last two years. I am truly shifted now!

Of course, this has brought home to me even more how woefully lacking library services are in a shifted environment, and I'll be doing a second write-up of how they look on the Treo. In fact, I'm thinking of submitting it as a presentation at the ILA Conference this fall because too few librarians have actually seen how their services look on a smartphone, and this is one way I could show them, even taking URLs from the audience. See, I could do that at ILA because I wouldn't have to rely on the conference center for internet access! (Assuming I can get a strong enough signal in the conference room....)

I've also updated the list of What's on My Treo 600, and I'm pretty close to maxxing out the memory on it, both internal and external. Hopefully I'll get a 256MB SD card for my birthday....  ;-)
