“Mobile devices and PCs are often the last thing administrators think of when beefing up defenses. An NCC Group survey last year showed that remote-client security updates are executed with less than one-fourth the frequency of on-site workstations, and that one-sixth of remote clients maintain no security at all. Here are the potential security holes and issues inherent when laptops log in to your network—and a way to protect your users. Remote laptop risks A…

Microsoft has moved for the first time into the disk-based backup and recovery market with the launch of its Data Protection Server. The continuous disk-based backup and recovery offering for the Windows Server System group of products will simplify backups and reduce the recovery process from "hours to minutes", the company promised. Currently available in a private beta version, Microsoft Data Protection Server is scheduled to be generally available in the second half of 2005. Bob Muglia, senior vice president of the Windows server division at Microsoft, said customers had complained that backing up and recovering their data was currently labour-intensive and complex.

Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should
Linux users return that love?
08/16/2004 02:19 PM
Unisys has long been the main booster -- possibly the only one besides Microsoft -- of Windows as a mainframe operating system. Now Unisys says it loves Linux -- but still claims to be a staunch Microsoft partner -- and it seems like most of its contributions to the Linux kernel are only useful to Unisys customers. And then there's the specter of the Unisys GIF patents (now expired), and how the company used them as weapons against free and open source software projects only a few years ago. In light of all this, should we welcome Unisys as a "member of the Linux community" with open arms, or maintain a skeptical distance until the company proves that it has truly seen the open source light?
