Twenty Years of Legend

Twenty Years of Legend 05/11/2004 12:08 PM
Marley's 'Legend' turns twenty:

"Legend'' is unique because it's become more than just music. It's an idea, a lifestyle, a web of cultural touchstones spun in a delicate vortex. In the realm of musical-taste-as-statement-of-personal-identity, "Legend'' says: I generally care about world events. I favor cotton clothing. I think stress is bad. I want to stop injustice. I'm all for love. I wouldn't say no to the herb, if you get my drift.

Stolen Car Turns Up Twenty Years Later

Stolen Car Turns Up Twenty Years Later
On The Internet
12/12/2003 05:44 AM
Some things you just don't expect. If your car was stolen in 1983, you probably have given up hope by now that you'll ever see it again. But, you should never doubt the power of the internet. A man who had his 1968 Mercury Cougar stolen in 1983 is getting the car back, thanks to the internet. Someone posted a classified ad trying to sell the car, and while investigating the background of the car, someone figured out that the car had been stolen and informed the rightful owner - suggesting he buy the car. However, the true owner was still in possession of all the paperwork saying that he's the rightful owner of the car, and therefore shouldn't have to pay to recover his own car. Meanwhile, the guy who had it has been arrested for "possession of stolen property" - though, he says the car was a gift from his father. Over the course of twenty years, I imagine the car could have shifted hands a few times.

Top twenty memories at CC

Top twenty memories at CC 04/04/2005 01:57 AM

I tried limiting this list to ten, but I couldn't do it. There's no way I could really limit it to twenty, even, but I'll go with the first score that come to mind, in no particular order.

(1) Meeting the World's Coolest Man.

Gil and Team

(2) Singing karaoke in Seoul with the lawyers of KAFIL, CC's affiliate institution for the newly launched Creative Commons Korea.

(3) Getting a phone call in January 2002 from my former professor and long-time hero Lawrence Lessig -- who, I couldn't be sure, really remembered me -- inviting me to join Creative Commons.

(4) Seeing Gilberto Gil and David Byrne perform Cole Porter's "Don't Fence Me In" at the WIRED Creative Commons benefit concert.

gil-byrne

(5) Brainstorming on and making "Get Creative" and "Reticulum Rex" with Neeru Paharia, Ryan Junell, Benjamen Walker, and Christopher Lydon.

(6) Seeing the Brazilian Portuguese translation of both movies at the launch of CC Brazil.

(7) First trying out the phrase "Some Rights Reserved" at a meeting with the great folks -- and later, friends -- of Rice Connexions.

(8) Talking about rock-and-roll, over beers, with Jamie Boyle, Mike Carroll, and Eric Saltzman after my first CC board meeting in Cambrige, MA.

(9) Sharing countless lunches (and jokes) with CC staff at the Treehouse, on Stanford's campus.

(10) Receiving the amazing going-away gifts of an iPod Shuffle full of CC music and a beautiful CC Taiwan poster from Lessig and the CC team on my last day.

(11) Seeing Grandmaster Flash perform, in a very weird context, at SXSW.

(12) Watching Justin Cone's "Building on the Past" for the first time.

(13) Seeing Christiane's daughter Lara playing with Willem at Larry and Bettina's house.

(14) At Duke's FRAMED! conference, seeing Negativland's Mark Hosler meet, confront, and then make friends with the lawyer who set the U2 brouhaha in motion.

(15) The CC Europe Summit.

(16) Awaking from a nap under my desk to hear everyone from CC and Stanford CIS singing Happy Birthday on my 30th.

(17) Hearing a crazed David Byrne fan tell my mother, age 73 -- at her first rock show ever -- that the song "Psycho Killer" reminded him of her.

(18) Eating at Carl's Jr. at 3am with two members of the Polyphonic Spree.

(19) Experiencing the mayhem before, and the joy during, every Creative Commons party.

(20) Doing an interview, with Lessig and Neeru, with the cartoon blogger Machina in Tokyo. blog_image_2

And there are so many more.

What kills me about putting this list together is to think of all the great things that I will miss out on from today forward.

Twenty Free DiscHubs

Twenty Free DiscHubs 09/13/2004 01:01 PM

white_dischub.jpg imageHey, want a free DiscHub? The boys who make the desktop storage caddy are giving away 20 free to Gizmodo readers. I'll be hiding codes inside of posts over the next day or two, and all you have to do is be the first to enter it into their form and you'll get a free DiscHub of your very own. Pretty slick, huh?

I've already dropped a couple codes onto the site, so get moving (I've been known to be a sneaky bastard, too, so don't expect them all just in plaintext). Oh, and play nice. Obviously, the codes are going to go really quickly, so if you miss the first one, don't freak out - just keep a sharp out for the next one. Good luck! GHRT23

DVForge Offering Twenty-Five Thousand

DVForge Offering Twenty-Five Thousand
for Mac Virus
03/26/2005 05:26 AM

First of all are these guys idiots. Actually offering $25,000 for someone to write a Mac Virus that they want to spread net wide. I tell you what I am going to do. If my Mac gets infected because of their actions I am going to sue them for damages. I am not a sue happy type of guy, quite the contrary but these types of actions need to be handled in a way that makes companies think twice before doing something so idiotic.

I had to look at the calendar to make sure it was not April's Fools Day as this is the most crazed thing I have seen someone do yet. To be so damn arrogant that you think a Mac is above getting a virus.

It's pure arrogance and that is what is going to do them in. Some hacker is gonna say ok I am gonna teach these arrogant fools a lesson and release something so horrific that Mac users worldwide will wake up with a hard-drive that has been formated or worse.

How many times do I have to say it. Their a bunch of idiots. They think their precious operating systems is so strong that it is safe from any Virus. They are going to eat lot of crow and I hope the Mac community speaks loudly and smacks them in the head.

I have already vowed to never buy a product from this company ever. I swear they are now on my forever I will not do busiess with stupid people list.

They must be prepared becuase they have their lawyers number on their contact page never seen that before.

Tell this company what you think. [DVForge] [Telephone Number (615) 822-9270] [Contact]

I'm in the market for a new flat-panel monitor, so Trusted Reviews' eight-way 20- and 21-inch flat-panel comparison was right up my alley -- at least until I realized it was, like, 1902913 pages long. So unless you're into the total nitty gritty of flat-panel testing, ignore all their hard work and skip to the end, where they offer up three good-looking and good value monitors for your consideration. Samsung and Viewsonic I sort of expected to see on there, but the third company I'd never even heard of.

Software That Lasts For Years And Years

Software That Lasts For Years And Years 07/14/2004 06:51 PM
We were just talking about the rise of quick and dirty programs as a way for individuals (not necessarily programmers) to solve specific needs. However, as was mentioned at the time, that would be a different "tier" of software programming, and there would still be a need for programmers to do higher level "big" projects. In the past, we've also discussed the problem of data extinction, where old computer systems and formats die out, leaving content and applications virtually useless on ancient media. This is a big problem for many applications, and Dan Bricklin is now suggesting that people need to start designing "Societal Infrastructure Software" that can last for centuries, not just a few years. The idea is that this type of software shouldn't have to worry about new computers or new formats or new anything... but will be able to just keep on working. In order to build this, though, Bricklin believes it will require embracing open source programming, though not necessarily the way people view open source programming today. It's a fascinating concept, but getting people to think long-term is so difficult these days, that you wonder if such ideas will actually catch on.

Five years, one day

Five years, one day 01/22/2004 02:19 PM

Yesterday I realized it has been five years since Evan and I founded Pyra, the company that led to Blogger. We used to have a company weblog called pyrAlert! (actually the software we wrote to publish pyrAlert! was what lead to the creation of Blogger). This morning Paulo wrote to point out that pyrAlert! is still online and you can go back into the archives and read what was going on at Pyra in 1999. You may also notice that there are no permalinks on any of the posts, because these posts were made BP, or before permalink! It's funny to see the kind of stuff we used to write about.
