Intel Inside... Consumer Electronics
(Again)

Intel Inside... Consumer Electronics
(Again)
04/26/2004 01:09 PM
Intel has a history of jumping into consumer electronics offerings, to try to jump start the convergence of consumer electronics and the computing world so that they could sell more chips both in PCs and in the consumer electronics equipment itself. So far, those efforts haven't gone too well, but now Intel believes that the timing is right and true convergence is happening between computing and consumer electronics in a way that will let Intel play a major role. The consumer electronics players, who have often viewed the computing companies with a bit of fear, realizing the potential threat, seem to be accepting what's happening and are working with Intel to try to create a world where they still matter. The main holdouts are still the content companies, though even that is beginning to change. Of course, it still seems like the reliance on the big content companies is over-rated. The internet became successful not because big companies signed on, but because it allowed people to "make their own content" by communicating with each other. In a world of consumer electronics, we're already seeing that if the products are made well, the content companies are getting dragged along and coming up with business models later (see: TiVo, iPod).

Xeni Jardin: Engadget posts word of a rumored new line of consumer electronics -- from Yahoo. An official launch announcement is said to be due within the next two weeks. This could also be nothing more than someone with a good imagination and functional Photoshop skills.
The initial line up is supposedly a portable DVD player, two LCD televisions, and a home theater in a box system. Like most of these kinds of releases (assuming this is for real), they're really just slapping their logo on products built by somebody else (in this case, it's supposedly Diamond Electronics). This is either a really big deal or someone just went to a lot of trouble to try and dupe us -- regardless, everything looked like it checked out, and it was too good to not pass along. Make sure you click to see pics and product descriptions.

Intel Pushes Consumer Electronics Angle 12/05/2003 01:54 PM
Leaders from Intel have been talking a lot lately about wanting to embed Intel's Wi-Fi chips into consumer electronics other than computers: I'll be glad to see that happen. Intel hopes to have its 802.11a/b/g product shipping early next year. This writer wonders why anyone would want the throughput offered by 802.11g. People want to do exactly what Intel hopes they'll do once 802.11g chips are embedded inside TVs and stereos--stream audio and video....

Hollywood Is Winning Because Consumer
Electronics Companies Are Divided

Hollywood Is Winning Because Consumer
Electronics Companies Are Divided
12/10/2003 04:15 PM
Business Week is looking at why Hollywood didn't have too much trouble pushing through the broadcast flag, saying that the consumer electronics industry is too splintered to put up a unified front against the MPAA. In some cases, consumer electronics companies (like Sony) are connected to Hollywood. In others, they're investing heavily in content protection schemes. Philips appears to be the only big consumer electronics player that is saying the broadcast flag is a bad thing for just about everyone involved. Part of the issue may be that the consumer electronics industry is getting squeezed on both sides by the content providers and computer companies who are moving quickly into their space. It's looking like it won't be long until the consumer electronics and computer industries aren't considered separate any more. Hopefully, though, the computer makers will be able to put together a united front against bad Hollywood ideas to lock up content. Of course, it would be even better if folks in Hollywood realized that they're harming themselves with these plans, but I guess you can't have everything.
