Keep up on the Landing of Spirit. Here is the latest:
0205 GMT (9:05 p.m. EST Sat.)
The landing of Opportunity is now three hours away.
In about 90 minutes, the spacecraft performs a turn to position its
heat shield facing the atmosphere. This will not only prepare for
entry but also the jettison of the no-longer-needed cruise stage.
Separation between the cruise stage and the descent module is expected
around 11:44 p.m. EST.

says:
The Mars rover Opportunity has arrived at "Endurance Crater" revealing
a variety of strata and rock formations and intriguing sand/salt
formations at the bottom. At issue now is not whether Opportunity can
roll in but whether she can climb back out for further investigations.
The Space.com bulletin boards are giddy at the possibility of
investigating 'water seeps' One poster is reporting that a lead JPL
scientists is predicting that Opportunity might last another six
months. Another suggests that "the plan for Opprtunity is to head
South/South West after it's done with Endurance Crater. The objective
being the white area which would be an ideal area to look for fossils.
If the rover can last as long as hoped though that puts some of the
much larger craters within reach too!"

And we thought
it was just a load of Soviet propaganda: Buran was pretty sweet
Well, no doubt a little bit of industrial espionage helped them in its
design, but the Soviet Buran really was an impressive technological
achievement and in many ways superior to the United States space
shuttle. Of particular interest is the impressive technology the
Soviet's developed for heavy-lift boosters. Does anyone know what's
become of any of this, or know of any other interesting bits of Soviet
-v- American space race trivia? This stuff always fascinates me.

The
waiting is over for the prosumer mini-DV world as Canon (finally)
releases the XL2, the follow-up to the wildly successful (some would
say ground-breaking) XL1S. With both 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios
(film-like and TV-like, respectively), variable frame rates (again, to
more closely emulate film or TV), interchangeable lens (the same as
the XL1S had, including a new 20x optical zoom lens), and more, all
wrapped around a 3 CCD system for maximum image, you know,
fantasticness.
More after the jump.

Canon A85 4-Megapixel
07/20/2004 09:47 AM
Canon has released an updated PowerShot, bumping the
A70 to the new A85, a 4-megapixel/3x optical zoom sidearm that also
adds PictBridge comparability (for easy one-button transfer direct
from camera to printer or portable hard drive). The A85 also ships
with a 32MB Compact Flash card, which is a nice step up from the usual
16MB card most cameras are bundled with. It's about time we start
seeing even low-end cameras with 32- or even 64-meg flash memory cards
right out of the box.
Also, coffee at 5PM can not be mitigated with bourbon at 11PM. Good
morning!

Canon i9900
Canon i9900
12/22/2004 01:39 AMWeāve spent quite a few bucks this last couple of years with one
photo-finisher or another, and recently Laurenās been cooking up
business ideas around photography. So she went out and got a
Canon i9900 and
I got my hands on it first; wow! Itāll probably end up plugged into
one of the fixed machines but we didnāt have the right cable, so I
FireWired it into my Mac (grr, had to reboot to install the driver)
and ran
one
or
two of my
favorite prints at 300dpi and well, my goodness gracious, they look
just like what comes back from the online print service, only better.
Iām sure that a fine professional photo-finisher who puts their soul
into their work can do better, but thatās not what Iām getting
when I upload my JPEGs to one mass-market printshop or another. And
thereās lots of playing-around to do with DPI and paper finishes and
colour spaces and so on. I assume that, things being what they are,
the competition is about as good too, which is very good indeed.

02/01/2005 09:08 PM
Canon continues to flesh out its popular Powershot A
Series of consumer cameras with the Powershot A520, a four-megapixel
snapper with a 4x optical zoom. With an estimated price of
$300—and a street price probably far below that—the 520
continues Canon's line of high-quality, easy-to-use cameras that don't
take a lot of savvy to manage. Seriously, cheap memory card format
(MMC/SD), common battery type (AA), and really nice quality
images—what's not to like?
The 520 is the follow-up to the Powershot 510, which was just announced a week or two back.

up the resolution (8-megapixel), buffer size, SD/CF, and on-board USB
