Half-male, half-female, all crab

Half-male, half-female, all crab 06/17/2005 03:35 PM
David Pescovitz: Fishermen caught a crab in the lower Chesapeake Bay that's literally half male, half female. Among other differences, male blue crabs have deep blue claws while females' claw tips look like they were painted with red nail polish. The fishermen noticed that this particular crab had one of each. Researchers at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science say that the condition, known as bilateral gynandromorphism, is caused by a "chromosomal mishap." Studying the rare animal could increase understanding of crab sexual development and breeding behavior. From the Washington Post:
 Wp-Dyn Content Photo 2005 06 16

Before turning over the crab to the scientists, (boat captain David) Johnson and other watermen conducted their own experiment into its sex life, with bewildering results. They dropped a female crab, which was just about ready to mate, into its tank.

First, the half-and-half crab cradled the female under his legs, as a male crab would do in preparation for mating.

Then, the crab seemed to lose interest in the female and let her go, Johnson said.

Then a day later . . .

"He ate half of her," Johnson said.

On the one hand, I do appreciate that my ISP does security scans, presumably checking for vulnerable and compromised machines on its part of the network. Yay them. On the other, I really wish they wouldn't do this from their nameserver machines. Having all the machines in your resolv.conf black-holed for security violations makes life somewhat less fun than one might otherwise like......

Over Half of U.S. Using Broadband 08/23/2004 12:37 PM

Half of U.S. Web Users Now on Broadband — Report: Wow. This came much earlier than I thought it would.

More than half of all U.S. residential Internet users reached the Web via fast broadband connections in July, outpacing use of slower, dial-up connections for the first time, market researcher Nielsen//NetRatings said on Wednesday.

What a day and half a night!

What a day and half a night! 06/25/2004 07:09 AM

Well I have had one heck of day woke up this morning to agonizing back pain stretched for a while to try and get the back to loosen up. Went downstairs and found the meds the doc had stocked me up on. A OxyCooden and a Flexeril and 20 minutes later I was doing much better. After a 2 hour nap I am up trying to get some work done. Start off and play around with Top Style and Homesite deciding that I still like Hotmetal better for regular html stuff but Top Style is the ticket for CSS. Went ahead and paid for that over the web and no I don't have to deal with the trial nags.

About 2 this afternoon I decide I have the templates and the CSS cleaned up as much as it is gonna be on the MT3 Test site and decide to roll the production to MT3 along with a couple of other sites I run. Start backups of the 2.6 site along with downloading the databases etc. Between a run to the pharmacy dinner and messing with the kids. This site is now running MT3. I then decided to do some house cleaning on the Laptop as I have been abusing it for the past 2 months and needed to get all of the software I have bought along with all of the programs that I decided where not worth it de-installed and general file organization. Burn a couple of Master DVD's etc etc etc. So here I am at 1:45am Hawaiian time and I am ready to see what has happened in the tech world news. No wonder my wife calls me nuts sometimes.

But I will tell you one thing that I have been able to get done while recovering from spine surgery is that I am remote logging into all of my machines and getting them organized and sync'd. Wife said her PC has not run this good in a couple of years. Amazing what you can get done when you have nothing but time on your hands.

I spent the past few days sitting in some airports which means I got a lot of writing done in the downtime. I jotte d down a bunch of things that have been bouncing around my head regarding social software, some half-baked, some fully baked.

I really like the map idea and think it could be successful. If anyone has a spare few million around and wants to try melding GIS software with community data, drop me a line. :)

Fun With Stats: How To Turn Less Than
Half Into 95%

Fun With Stats: How To Turn Less Than
Half Into 95%
03/31/2005 02:52 PM
You have to hand it to the folks who put out research reports. They certainly know how to pick up stats that aren't particularly interesting and twist them into suggesting something that simply isn't true. While the Globe And Mail got this story right, others who are following up on it, are picking up on exactly what the study's publishers wanted them to focus on. Slashdot has announced that 95% of IT projects are not delivered on time -- which sounds a little alarming (though, probably not if you work in technology, where you might have guessed such a number). Of course, that's not what the actual story says at all. In fact, the study claims that less than half of IT projects run late. It's not Slashdot's fault, necessarily (though, it is made clear in the article), as it appears this is exactly what the study's backers wanted people to pick up on. The real stat is that 95% of IT groups claim that they don't complete all projects on time. In other words, if an IT group has 100 projects to work on this year, and they deliver 99 of them on time, but one comes in late, they fall into that 95% category. If anything is surprising about that number, it's that it's not 100%. However, by positioning the study with the 95% number, it sounds a lot more interesting than claiming less than half of all IT projects run over their expected delivery date.

The posting, on a Web site that frequently carried militants' statements, included a photo of what that statement said was an American soldier, wearing desert fatigues and seated on a concrete floor with his hands tied behind his back. The figure in the photo appeared stiff and expressionless... Looks like a bunch of newspapers got duped.
