Free baby photo trojan gets new moms to
sell baby-privacy
04/04/2005 06:24 AM
Cory Doctorow: A friend of mine worked at Procter and Gamble when they hit on the idea of giving away baskets of baby-related freebies to new moms. The idea was that a couple days after the family went home and they needed more diapers, mom would send dad out with the package from the freebies and say, "More like these, please." It's pretty clever, and I'm cool with it -- especially now that the whole thing is handled through brokers who take products from a variety of vendors, with input from maternity wards.

That, I think, is a pretty good way of marketing to new families. It doesn't compromise privacy, it gives them something they need, and it doesn't force them or lock them in. It's informative, useful, and respectful (provided that the marketing makes it clear that there's no medical endorsement of these products).

Compare that to this: a service that sneakily gets moms to agree to a "free baby photo" while they're signing all their necessary medical forms on the morning of their delivery. The company that takes the picture then sells your contact info to anyone who'll buy it.

On the morning of the delivery, the nurse hands a sheaf of forms to the mother-to-be. Buried within is a release form offering a free portrait of the new baby. Mom is wired to three different machines, having her pulse and blood pressure measured automatically while two others sensors detect uterine contractions and the baby’s heart rate and another chattering electromechanical behemoth plots a seismograph of both...

...[T]he photo enterprise is run by a third party, Growing Family. They’ll shoot a picture of your munchkin, in exchange for his or her name and birthdate and your full name and address...

Growing Family will use your information from time to time to promote additional products, services, rewards and special offers from Growing Family Network and its select Network Partners.

Another friend of mine had his baby daughter die from crib-death a few weeks after she was born. For years afterward, he and his wife got a steady stream of marketing materials, including ghastly "birthday cards" from marketers who'd bought the information that they'd had a baby, but never received the message that the baby had died. Needless to say, when their next baby was born, they never, ever bought products from the companies that ghoulishly continued to market to their dead daughter. Link (via A Whole Lotta Nothing)

Vegas

Vegas 04/20/2004 12:44 PM
Sheila and I got back last night from a four-day weekend in Las Vegas. We went with some family and friends, stayed at the Paris hotel, had a wonderful time.

Right before we left, we noted the announcement of PulpFictio n. You know what? It looks pretty good.

Only a masochist craves competition—but quality competition is a sign of a healthy ecosystem.

At any rate, it’s probably a good idea if I talk more about what’s coming in the next release of NetNewsWire. Which I’ll do, in a follow-up post.

Leaving Las Vegas

Leaving Las Vegas 01/16/2004 10:57 AM
Sorry for the absence, folks... I've just limped back into New York from a lost weekend of fear and loathing in Las Vegas, during which just about the last thing on my mind was this blog. Before I post anything real - and I have several rants percolating - I want to thank you for having maintained what I consider a commendable civility while I was off contributing to the decline of civilization, despite your passionately conflicting political beliefs. There's been froth and pitch and a lot of wit. Best of all, you've been sounding like grown-ups. (A virtue I've come to appreciate a lot more of late.) I think the "constructive combat" I wished for in my last post may actually be arising here. This can be a venue where the vectors of opinion that presently rend our beloved country can come to appreciate each other a little better, if only for our sense of humor. I don't think either side is likely to win many converts. We're all pretty convinced. But if we maintain our currently reduced level of name-calling, we might grow back some of the tolerance that has become all too rare among our fellow citizens and upon which democracy itself depends. I be back at it myself as soon as I've had a chance to clear my head. In that service, I'm off to find myself a latte. Since my place here is in Little Italy, that will be easy enough to do. Might even pick up a New York Times while I'm at it......

From Vegas to the Battlefield

From Vegas to the Battlefield 04/16/2004 02:33 PM

Feature recognition software designed to spot problematic gamblers in Vegas casinos has proven so good that it will change the battlefield of the future. Soon, UAV's will have software that can anylize video and match targets to an existing database of objects. Dubbed DIVOT (Imagery and Video Object Tracking), this software is already being tested by the Air Force.

"It starts beeping on this clump of trees," Cook said. "And they had to drive the UAV about another two miles before they could get close enough [to see] there was a vehicle underneath the trees."

The captain whose face had been loaded into the computer was sitting in his truck eating lunch. "It found his face through the trees, through the windscreen, in the shadows of the trees, and we went, 'Wow, we need to explore this,'" Cook said.

Advances like this will be a field commander's dream.

Bowling to Vegas

Bowling to Vegas 03/14/2003 01:09 PM
Bowling to Vegas! Four drunk bowling fanatics from Chicago are bowling their way across country....apparently for lack of anything better to do(looks like a couple of them are unemployed). Also, they're trying to restore dignity to the good old-fashioned Road Trip(and, of course, bowling). Why bowl to Vegas instead of fly? As Mike says: "It's not about the destination, it's about the journey. Nobody has respect for the road trip anymore. Haven't you people seen Fandango?" Follow their progress across country, and buy 'em a round.

November in Vegas

November in Vegas 10/28/2003 11:09 PM
Here we are, in the middle of October already, and I have no idea what I'm going to "be" for Halloween. I haven't even had time to watch The Nightmare Before Christmas yet! I'll be headed to Las Vegas a month from today for both APCUG and Apachecon. They've each asked me to present my position on RSS, so I'll be happy to oblige. Maybe I'll dress up as an orange XML button on the 31st? Nah, that's too friggin' scary. What about Gozer? Or a Doozer? Or a menu like the Chooser?...

I just got back from Vegas, and I want to do a quick recap.

I only have a few minutes (I'm using Ryan's computer, since my Linux box has a blown-out monitor, and the logic board on my iBook exploded -- for the fourth time in two years -- Thursday morning before we left) so I'm going to make a very quick recap of some highlights now, before I forget . . .

The SRL show scheduled for Feb 7th in Las Vegas is cancelled as of today due to unreasonable restrictions imposed by the Las Vegas Fire Department. We regret any inconvenience this may have caused those interested in attending this event.
