Linksys says faster..FASTER!
01/04/2005 08:10 PMOver at CES, Linksys will be announcing a new series of 802.11g
products that integrate SRX, a new speed boosting feature.
Currently, 802.11g networks have a range of between 120 and 160 feet
and a transfer at 54mbps.
Linksys claims that the SRX enabled 802.11g products can provide 3
times the range (450 feet) and is 8 times faster (i.e. nearly USB 2
speed wireless).
It's completely compatible with other 802.11g and 802.11b networks.
The wireless router is expected to sell for $199 and each card around
$129 and should be available at stores shortly.

Research Buddy - Saves References To WebPages in
Bibliographical Reference Form
http://researchbuddy.mozdev.or
g/
Research Buddy saves references to webpages in a
bibliographical reference form. The extension is designed to be used
in the following way: 1) The user finds a quote on a webpage and wants
to reference the quote in his/her paper, 2) The user selects the text
of this quote, and, in the right-click menu, selects "Research Buddy"
(this step is optional: the page can be referenced without selected
text), 3) The plugin opens the main Research Buddy dialog, which
allows the user to select which research topic the page should be
filed under, and 4) The user clicks on "Add to selected topic", and
the reference is saved to the topic. Depending on the preferences, the
page (and it's images) may be saved to the user's disk. Users can also
add new topics, delete old topics, rename topics, and view the
bibliography for a topic. The Research Buddy preferences allow the
user to configure the behavior of the plugin. Preferences are stored
in a file, so they persist between web sessions: a) Bibliography
format string (defaults to a generic reference string, b) Root
directory to store pages in (set to the mozilla profile directory by
default), c) Save the html of the referenced page (this is useful for
ensuring access to the content regardless of the availability of the
website. on by default, d) Save the images on the referenced page
(useful for pages where content is at least partially contained in
images. off by default to save disk space), e) Many bibliography
strings will require an "Author" field. Due to the difficulty of
accurately finding the author of a given webpage, they decided that
this task be left up to the user, and f) The citations are stored in
xml format, and an html file is only generated when the user clicks on
"View Topic". This has been added to the tool section of
Research Resources
Subject Tracer™ Information Blog and added to
Student Resources Subject
Tracer™ Information Blog.

PHPBB, Sessions and Inbox Buddy
PHPBB, Sessions and Inbox Buddy
02/12/2003 12:31 PMPHPBB, Sessions and Inbox Buddy
We use PHPBB, an excellent web discussion tool, to run the support
forum for Inbox Buddy. And lately it has been crashing with a "Error
Creating New Session" issue. And while I have learned to laboriously
go into MySQL and purge the session table, they now have an officially
sanctioned fix for it. Apparently the issue is that a lot of bots are
hammering sites trying to retrieve data and thus generating a lot more
sessions than necessary. Since sessions are stored in a heap table,
the maximum rows are quickly reached and the sessions are maxed out
giving the error. The fix automatically deletes from the heap table
allowing the error to (theoretically) never occur. [_Go_]
This brings me to a larger session related php question -- are
sessions good or bad in general? It seems like lately whenever I
encounter sessions in a large php application, they always cause some
kind of issue. Is this bad programming or simply the nature of
sessions? Clearly linking directly to specific things is more
important than ever and sessions seem to interfere with that (at a
minimum they mangle the url's length).
Note: I haven't done much programming with sessions in PHP at all so I
could be way off base here. Perhaps they are the best thing since
sliced bread and squirtable mustard and I just don't know it.

04/11/2005 08:22 PMJeff Carlson (~160 words)
Sync Buddy 2.0.1 Syncs Palms and
Mac OS X -- Back in the early days of the PalmPilot, Florent
Pillet released Palm Buddy (later renamed Sync Buddy), a Mac OS
program for backing up data from a Palm OS handheld by opening an
active connection between the two machines. Now, Pillet has rewritten
Sync Buddy for Mac OS X. Sync Buddy 2.0.1 can back up handhelds via
USB, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi connections. It also lets you install files
and transfer photos, as well as copy files to removable media such as
SD cards. The utility is compatible with Hot Sync Manager (which Palm
Desktop uses to synchronize data) and Mark/Space's The Missing Sync
software, automatically disabling them while Sync Buddy is running,
and re-enabling them when it's done. Sync Buddy 2.0.1 costs $25, and
is available as a 4.3 MB download. [JLC]

02/01/2005 09:55 PMAt times, previous releases of Apple's digital photo management
program iPhoto came across as catch-up efforts -- catching up to the
features found in third party applications that came before it;
catching up to the incredible pace that people were shooting and
storing digital pictures; and catching up to the potential of being
mature Mac OS X applications that aren't hobbled by the halting
performance and feature compromises that have been the hallmark of
Apple's 1.0 applications of late. In many ways, iPhoto 5 feels like
it's finally caught up. Some elements are organized a bit differently
than before, but in a way that suggests the designers took a closer
look at how people are actually using it.

About the only downside I've found so far is the resolution limits
at Typepad, which seem to force images whatever max width and height
is in your settings (typically 500-640px). Also, I have no idea how
much the final version of PhotoToTypepad will cost, hopefully it'll be
$5-10.
