Hello to 'Broadcasting House'
listeners...
06/17/2005 03:22 PM

A brief welcome to everyone who listened to Broadcasting House this morning and find themselves on plasticbag.org for the first time. If you're looking for posts about weblogs then I can recommend the Persona l Publishing archive. If you're unfamiliar with weblogs, then probably the best way to describe them is as a launchpad to express your opinions, engage in conversations and note stuff down in public. I've been writing this particular weblog since November 1999, when it was very informal and only for a few friends. Today all kinds of people seem to get value from it. At the moment those people seem (weirdly) to be Doctor Who fans who have seized a little post I wrote a couple of weeks ago and have decided to use it as a launchpad for slightly over-the-top theorising. I think that post got sixty comments yesterday alone. To be honest, I couldn't be more delighted.

I'm probably more known for my thoughts on social software, future media consumption and net culture in general. I'm also in the process of trying to find my father and I write about that whenever I get any news. If you want to know more about me then I can recommend reading About Tom Coates. If you're interested in finding out more about corporate weblogging in general then I can recommend posts by Scobleizer , Anil Dash and an article called The Unbearable Rightness of Nick Denton. Nice to have you with us!

Forget guitars, basses and drums. Ignore singers, rappers and deejays. As we enter 2005, and cast our eyes back at 2004, it seems like the real revolution in music hasn't come from a musician, but from a piece of technology. Namely: the almighty iPod. By Jim Farber, New York Daily News

Recording industry to demand

06/05/2004 04:32 PM
Isn't the recording industry silly for trying this? I'm glad it's wasting its time on this fool's errand. I hope Veritouch gets millions from the RIAA for this rotten idea, which has a zero percent chance of catching on.
The RIAA is hoping that a new breed of music player which requires biometric authentication will put an end to file sharing. Established biometric vendor Veritouch has teamed up with Swedish design company to produce iVue: a wireless media player that allows content producers to lock down media files with biometric security. This week Veritouch announced that it had demonstrated the device to the RIAA and MPAA.

Vigilante Revenge

IBM Believes In Spam For A Spam
Vigilante Revenge
03/22/2005 05:03 PM
It seems that larger companies are really getting pissed off at spammers these days. While going out and attacking spammers used to be more limited to net.vigilantes, some well known companies have been taking stronger approaches to fighting spam lately. A few months back there was Lycos ' plan to let anyone download a screensaver that would launch distributed denial of service attacks on spammers. While Lycos claimed it wouldn't take anyone offline, it wasn't long before that was proven false. Next up on the list is IBM, whose latest anti-spam offering will send data right back at spamming machines in an effort to slow them down. It's not quite a distributed denial of service attack -- it's more like a centralized one. It's sort of one step up beyond greyl isting which just slows down the spam. Instead, this tries to slow down the computer sending the spam. Again, this leaves IBM open to charges of hitting back too hard -- especially if innocent sites get taken offline in the process. Still, when large companies like IBM start offering products like this, you know that people are getting fed up.

Are Speakerphone Mobile Calls Less
Annoying Than Regular Calls?

Are Speakerphone Mobile Calls Less
Annoying Than Regular Calls?
04/21/2004 03:53 PM
Last week we noted a new study saying that people get annoyed with others talking on mobile phones because they only hear one half of the conversation. At the time, I wrote that this made sense as periods of silence followed by talking are a lot more jarring to the passive listener. However, this BBC report claims that the reason for the annoyance is that it shows that we're more curious about what the other party is saying. I'm not sure I buy that. It seems much more likely that it's the variability in noise, from silent to noisy rather than any form of curiosity. When the conversation is at a constant hum (even when loud), it's much easier to tune it out. Still, the findings do go against the opinion many people have expressed that things like "push-to-talk" where the phone usually acts as a speaker phone would be more annoying since we get to hear both sides of the conversation. In fact, the researchers behind the study are even suggesting that mobile phone makers may want to explore adding speaker phones to more phones to make them less annoying. Of course, the study only set up two conditions: a conversation on a mobile phone and a face-to-face conversation. They didn't test the speaker phone situation to see how annoying that was. It's possible that the annoyance factor comes from the inability to make use of body language to express concepts as well, leading to a different tone of voice.

Olympics Shut Down Online Radio Stream
Of Radio Stations
08/16/2004 02:27 PM
It appears the folks running the Olympics are so focused on controlling (i.e., "selling") the rights to broadcast accounts of the Olympic games that they're forcing some radio stations to shut down their internet streams. The radio stations in question have regular radio broadcast rights for the Olympics, but since they didn't pay up to internet broadcast rights, they need to turn off their internet streams for the duration of the games. Considering the fact that it appears that no one is actually attending these games in person, apparently, the Olympics has decided that they're going to squeeze broadcasters for every last penny. Ah, the spirit of the games.
