Macworld review: PocketMac Pro 3.3
08/12/2004 03:14 PMLast year, we reviewed PocketMac Pro 2.0, the first application that
allowed PDAs running Microsoft's Windows-only PocketPC OS to interact
with Macs. It didn't make a great impression. Installing and
configuring the software was a long, fiddly process that was certain
to leave you with a clear understanding of what phrases like "kernel
panic" and "stress-related embolism" mean. The program also had a
clumsy, amateurish interface, and it let you exploit only a fraction
of your PocketPC's features.

Failure to communicate
Failure to communicate
01/16/2004 10:57 AMA growing segment of the technologically-enabled population is
developing what I would best describe as a "derision" towards those
who are not technically competent, for whatever reason. This sentiment
is immediately apparent in the technical support industry, but I've
seen it from peers who've never been formally introduced to tech
support as well. The common factor in the derision appears to be a
result of differences between the two groups of people involved: those
who feel they have invested much time in competence, and those who
they feel have not. Over time, repeated communication failures left
unaddressed appear to result in a build-up of resentment towards one
(or, more often, both) parties. One of the clearest examples of this
can be found in comics that focus on these conflicts, such as Dilbert,
Userfriendly, or w00t; in each, one can find...

More Evidence That People Want Phones To
Communicate
03/31/2005 07:20 AMI've been
ranting a
bit lately about how the mobile carriers have gotten completely
carried away with the idea that "content is king." They are
forgetting that mobile phones are
communications devices first.
Almost no one is buying a phone for broadcast style content first.
They buy it to communicate -- creating content for each other.
Broadcast style content is an additional "nice to have," but it
shouldn't be the focus, and the carriers shouldn't be
crippling
the communications functions just to support the less desirable
broadcast ones. Well, here's a bit more evidence to support that
viewpoint. Despite all the hype and talk about mobile content and
ringtones,
mess
aging still accounts for 85% of all youth mobile data revenue. In
other words, they're chatting with each other much, much more than
they're downloading the latest ringtone.

about another one of the phones announced by Motorola this week, the
A780, a Linux-based handset that will run on EDGE (new wireless
broadband fastness) networks. And while it's full-featured as anything
-- 1.3-megapixel camera, gostosa! -- the most interesting thing
about the A780 is its screen. Through a hole in the flip-top basic
information like Caller ID can be seen, while the full display is
accessible when opened. It's a smart design; hopefully developers will
take advantage of it.
