Rube Goldberg machine to be demoed

Rube Goldberg machine to be demoed
tomorrow in NYC
01/09/2004 09:56 PM
A filmmaker has built animated an actual Rube Goldberg machine -- a self-operating napkin -- and written an original score to accompany it and will perform both tomorrow night in NYC.
"It's basically attached to the pendulum of a clock," Mr. Biskin said, "so the napkin swings back and forth." He used Goldberg's original drawings to make his film, titled "Goldberg's Variations." At first he intended only to write music for the artwork, but he decided the images needed to move. "It was kind of fun to get into the physics of it," Mr. Biskin said, noting that he sometimes had to reposition figures like a drunk bird or a cat that had had too much caffeine. He has also featured Goldberg's convoluted texts onscreen.

Win XP SP2 "turns Firewire 800 into
Firewire 100"
08/12/2004 02:38 PM
The moderator of the RME forum has warned that installing Windows XP SP2 can lead to the bus speed being limited to 100Mbit/s. Matthias Carstens posted the message on the RME forum yesterday, but says it's not a problem particular to RME products. He said: "It affects any Firewire 800 device. If you have a FW800 PCI card and an FW 800 hard disk, go see the bits come one by one through the Firewire cable".

RME, he said, was aware of the problem for some time, but "didn't really imagine that Microsoft would have the guts to try to bury an existing standard. We just downloaded the final public version and it is simply unbelievable". He said that some companies are trying to sell Firewire 800 drivers so everything will be hunky-dory. But, he said, these drivers probably won't work correctly with a Fireface 800.

Sega Neo Geo Controller for PS2

Sega Neo Geo Controller for PS2 12/29/2004 12:01 PM

snk_controller.jpg imageFor me, nothing beats a good D-pad and an analog thumbstick for gaming, but for the ultimate fighting game championships, it's hard to go wrong with a nice 8-way joystick. And while it's not my favorite stick from history (the metal-shod, Ghostbusters II NES Advantage probably is nearest to my heart), the Neo Geo controller certainly has a certain something, not the least of which is that it was the first home gaming console controller that had a proper joystick (Atari, et al not withstanding).

So all that's to say, Sega Logistics and SNK Playmore have teamed up to release a new version of the classic controller, called the 'Neo Geo Stick 2,' with 4 extra buttons to work with the Sony Playstation 2. It's a strange landscape, isn't it, with Sega releasing an SNK design on a Sony platform.

One-Handed PS2 Controller

One-Handed PS2 Controller 09/09/2004 02:38 PM

ffxi_onehand.jpg imageJapanese manufacturer Sanwa Denshi has created a special one-handed Playstation 2 controller, designed to work with the online-only Final Fantasy XI. Apparently the control in FFXI are so basic that you only need a D-pad and four buttons, though, and not the full compliment of shoulder buttons and the like - making it wholly unsuited for most other games. That's too bad, too, because all jerk off gamer jokes aside, one handed controllers are a fine idea for RPGs and other games that don't require precise, frantic input. There was a einhanded controller for the original Playstation, if I recall. Somebody should re-release that for the PS2.

Oh, and I like the retractable cord!
