Macworld keynote stuff

Macworld keynote stuff 02/01/2005 08:54 PM
My thoughts about Macworld keynote stuff...

I’m at home working, not at the show, and I haven’t seen the keynote yet, just read the news. But I have a few thoughts so far:

1. The headless Mac is cool. Period. I want five. I won’t even turn them on, I just want them.

It’s crazy to me how Apple hardware can provoke such desire, but it does.

2. I don’t know if the iPod shuffle is cool. It’s not for me—but it doesn’t need me to buy one in order to sell a few million of them.

Which proves that not every Apple product provokes desire in the heart of every Mac geek. (By the way, I do have an iPod already, if that explains it.)

3. iWork is an odd duck.

I so wanted a great—or even good—word processor and spreadsheet to replace AppleWorks.

I don’t use Microsoft Office, and the open-source office products are, so far at least, still using non-native UI stuff. (They look and feel annoyingly weird. To me. But this will change. Eventually. I hope.)

Dori Smith says that Page s is not a word processor, it’s entry-level page layout software. From what I’ve seen so far I agree. Think PageMaker, not Word.

So: no word processor, no spreadsheet.

But—you know what?—I bet somebody out there makes good word processors and spreadsheets for OS X. It’s just a matter of finding ones I like. (Any recommendations?)

4. Tiger, iLife, etc.—yes, all cool, I’m a happy Mac user.

Jobs to Give MacWorld Keynote

Jobs to Give MacWorld Keynote 12/18/2003 09:18 AM
IDG World Expo has announced that Apple CEO Steve Jobs will give the opening keynote address for MacWorld Expo San Francisco 2004. The expo will take place January 5-9, 2004 at the Moscone Convention Center with the keynote taking place on the 6th at 9 am. No word yet whether the keynote will be webcast.

watching job's macworld keynote

watching job's macworld keynote 01/06/2004 02:22 PM

And on the 20th anniversary of the launch of the Mac no less...

First, It is amazing that an audience can clap, hoot and make lots of noise over someone saying "We've added a G5 to our XServe line" and things of that nature. It is kind of surreal.

Aside from XServe upgrades and such and the new versions of iLife apps (iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD), Jobs announced GarageBand, software for making music, and what I can say is: WOW. Great synthethized instruments. Loops. Effects. Amps (!). Great Quality. Jobs' demo of this product was really, really impressive. It's not as if I can compare this to more professional tools that are out there, since I'm not aware of what the market is like (I just remember playing with CakeWalk on the PC a while ago, but it was crap compared to this), but since this is included in a $49 package, or free with new Macs, it seems to me that it's a big deal. Or at a minimum, another reason to lust after a Mac. :)

BTW, the "iLife ad" they showed after the demo was terrible, especially compared to the live demo, even more considering that many of the lines that the people in the video say had been used verbatim by Jobs before, which takes away a lot of the enjoyment of the keynote (What? You mean that the keynote was scripted?!? -- you're reminded of what you already knew but Jobs had made you forget). Ditch the pathetic ads apple, Jobs on a stage is enough. :)

Finally, the "iPod mini" (and it comes in colors!). 4 GB of memory (!!!). This is clearly not using Flash, but a microdrive, although Jobs didn't mention it, I'm sure that is the case. Very cool and not that expensive ($249) compared to flash players, after which they are going. However, the high-end flash players now are about one quarter of the size of the mini and no doubt 1/4 of weight too, and you can get around 512 MB for reasonable prices. So, I still prefer flash players but the iPod mini will probably be a good choice for many people.

Cool stuff.

Microsoft To Bridge Office, Back Office
Apps
01/26/2004 01:10 AM
Microsoft continues to build bridges between Office desktop apps and reservoirs of back-office data. The "Information Worker Bridge" project now under way seeks to make it easier for integrators or in-house developers to make Excel or Word de-facto front ends for back-end accounting, ERP or other applications, sources said. In theory, this would take back-office integration beyond ODBC drivers and InfoPath, the Office application that lets people build dynamic forms on their desktops that tap into back-office XML data.

Do Not Contact Me, Ever

Do Not Contact Me, Ever 11/05/2003 06:04 PM
An interesting look from the other side of the coin on the whole "do not call" and "do not spam" world. Plenty of companies that are doing legitimate marketing over the phone and email are scared to death of frivolous lawsuits from folks who don't remember signing up with them. Some have kept meticulous records of their relationship with people, but still know they're going to end up in court. Just keeping track of all that information and doing their best to scrub their lists clean is proving to be costly. Of course, there's one telling quote in the article, where one person says: "We brought this on ourselves—it's all telemarketers' faults." Exactly. If they really did a good job and not an intrusive job of marketing to people, this wouldn't be such a big issue.

Seth Shostak, senior astronomer for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI), predicts that we'll detect an extraterrestrial transmission within twenty years. The bold forecast is based on two factors: an estimation of how many alien transmitters there might be in our galaxy, and Moore's Law, which says that computer processing power will double every eighteen months or so. From New Scientist:
"Within a generation, radio emissions from enough stars will be observed and analysed to find the first alien civilisation, Shostak estimates. But because they will probably be between 200 and 1000 light years away, sending a radio message back will take centuries."

Contact with Google

Contact with Google 05/10/2004 05:51 AM

I have been emailing with David Krane, a PR person at Google, who works alongside Cindy McCaffery. That's good. He had emailed me an invite to use Gmail in the first wave of invites, but my very crude spam system coughed it up, and then hurled his follow-up email. Once I knew it was there and got back from Europe I tried to use it, only to find out that the invite had expired. Over the weekend David very kindly set me up with a new one, and now I have an empty Gmail account, dave.winer. Obviously it's not going to be much use until it starts getting some email, so send me a message if you feel so inclined.

As noted yesterday, it was disappointing that the new Blogger interface, which looks quite nice, doesn't support RSS 2.0. I'm far from the only one who's commenting. It would be so easy to do, so not evil, so grown-up, so much appreciated if they would just do it. Pretty soon RSS is going to be known as the format of the BigPubs, which is totally ironic because I'm one of the original bloggers. Come on guys, what if I say please? Please, I'm down on bended knees .

Another note, I now have four different logins at Google: Orkut, AdSense, Blogger and Gmail. Each with a different username and password. Now here's an area where Google could be a leader, provide an alternative to Passport, something we really need, a Google-size problem.

Both user interfaces, Gmail and the new Blogger are very slick, but Gmail is the more sophisticated. Those guys should get busy with blogging, if they're not already working on a blogging interface. And don't be surprised when Google announces a centralized aggregator a la Bloglines (hopefully not with a three-pane interface). That will be Microsoft's cue to release announce theirs, and we're off to the races. (I bet Sun buys Bloglines.) That's why it's so incredibly important that the format coalesce now before it becomes a basis for competition, like the browser wars of the 1990s. That's why I'm beggin. (Of course, with the great running start RSS has, this could be the final act for the Tech industry. Imagine if the users told them to get with the program or die. That would be very very cool.)
