Wired: Why Your Next Phone Call May Be
Online
01/04/2004 11:58 PM

A brief "how this stuff works" piece on VoIP I wrote for the current issue of Wired Magazine:

Regional and long-distance carriers, facing extinction, are lobbying government officials for protection. California, Minnesota, and at least nine other states are pushing for some sort of regulation, and the FCC is weighing its options. Meanwhile, big telecom is joining the party. International voice carrier Teleglobe is acquiring a VoIP wholesaler, and others are poised to follow suit. Cox, Comcast, Cablevision, Qwest, and Time Warner are also rolling out VoIP offerings. Their existing customer bases, fat pipe IP infrastructures, and coveted "last mile" connectivity create a powerful triple threat. And, as more telecommunications monopolies around the world open up for competition, the cost savings promised by VoIP seems destined to spark a market shift as dramatic as the one that followed US telecom deregulation decades ago.

Newly Rebuilt Seattle Branch's First
Phone Call: Do You Have Wi-Fi?

Newly Rebuilt Seattle Branch's First
Phone Call: Do You Have Wi-Fi?
02/05/2005 09:27 PM
The Greenwood Branch of the Seattle Public Library system opened Jan. 29: My officemate and I stopped in to take a look at this fantastic building a few blocks from our office and chatted with the branch manager. We asked, "Is there Wi-Fi?" She said, no, but there's a plan afoot to roll it out to branches soon. But she noted that the first phone call they received after re-opening was from someone asking the same question! It's a trend. The library was funded by Libraries for All, a truly remarkable levy that helped fund our tremendous new downtown branch (Wi-Fi throughout, Vocera badges in use by librarians), and revamp or rebuild a number of aged neighborhood libraries that were incredibly overused. Some libraries are four times as large, and the community is overjoyed. We're apparently the readingest, bookbuyingest city in the U.S. I'm hoping that the libraries will come before citizens again soon and ask for a levy to fund operator expenses: we need more library hours, more staff, more books. The libraries are well used here, and people seem to like to pay for them (indirectly). I know I do. Ironically, a coffeeshop half a block from the library has been hoping they'll add Wi-Fi: the shop is too small to handle more than its usual packed array of regulars and passers-by, so they hope to shunt the Wi-Fi needy over to what will be a free service at the library....

Why hotels need to charge you $7 for a

Why hotels need to charge you $7 for a
phone call (hint: Bill Gates is
involved)
02/14/2004 02:39 PM

If you stay in a lot of hotels, as I do, it seems odd that after reaming you out of $150 per night they also need to charge you $7 for a short phone call, $7 to wash a T-shirt, $20 for breakfast, $13 for Internet access, etc.  A friend who owns hotels explained what is happening...

A standard travel agency sells you a hotel room for $X and takes a commission, usually 10%, passing the remaining 90% on to the hotel.  Thus 90% of what you pay can be used by the hotel to make your stay pleasant, invest in high-speed Internet, put in a phone system.  Some online services such as Orbitz and Travelocity act as travel agents, finding the best rooms that they can and taking a fixed percentage commission.

Expedia, a company spun off by Microsoft in 1999 but presumably still substantially owned by Microsoft and Bill Gates, uses its dominant market position to arrange favorable deals with hotels.  The deal might be that Expedia gets to buy up to 50 rooms per night for $75 each, for example.  If the market is soft Expedia can resell those rooms to consumers for $100 per night.  If the market is tight Expedia can resell those rooms for $200 per night, pocketing the $125 difference between what they charge the traveler and what they pay the hotel.  If things are so bad that nobody wants to pay $75 on a particular night, Expedia dumps the vacant rooms back on the hotel.  Much of the profits that hotels formerly earned and invested back in their properties is now being captured by Expedia.

So if you book via Expedia and have to pay $20 for breakfast, have some sympathy for the hotel owner.  He might have gotten less than half of what you paid Expedia for that room.
