Four alternative Linux window managers 07/29/2004 08:21 AM
KDE and GNOME combine window managers with suites of applications to create comprehensive work environments. As complete as they are, it's easy to forget that there are other graphical ways to work on a Linux desktop. Sometimes a lighter-weight window manager is in order, such as for laptop usage, children's use, or quick startup applications. Here are four "alternative" window managers that are mature, fast, and functional.

washingtonpost.com - The choice of software to run our computers can get awfully depressing. On one hand, there's Windows XP -- expensive and woefully insecure, but it works on almost every machine out there. On the other, there's Mac OS X -- far more secure, but also expensive and restricted to Apple's own computers.

Linux Client Sweeps Europe After Delays

Linux Client Sweeps Europe After Delays 08/12/2004 08:39 PM
After delays caused by potential patent and licensing issues, several European nations are moving ahead with Linux as a client operating system.

Erwin Gillich, head of Vienna's IT department, released reports stating that Vienna will have the option to migrate from Windows to Linux in a pilot program set to be reviewed in 2006. The announcement states that 8,000 desktop workstations (half the city's overall workstations) will have the option to switch under the new pilot program.

Christian Ude, Munich's mayor, has also announced that the city will move 14,000 notebook and workstations to Linux. Dispite potential patent issues that are as yet unresolved in the European Parliament and the European Council of Ministers, Munich is moving ahead with it's request of proposals Novell and IBM.

Microsoft's response to what it sees as a definite threat to it's hold on government markets has offered favorable deals to other German city governments to intice them not to switch to Linux.

Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should
Linux users return that love?
08/16/2004 02:19 PM
Unisys has long been the main booster -- possibly the only one besides Microsoft -- of Windows as a mainframe operating system. Now Unisys says it loves Linux -- but still claims to be a staunch Microsoft partner -- and it seems like most of its contributions to the Linux kernel are only useful to Unisys customers. And then there's the specter of the Unisys GIF patents (now expired), and how the company used them as weapons against free and open source software projects only a few years ago. In light of all this, should we welcome Unisys as a "member of the Linux community" with open arms, or maintain a skeptical distance until the company proves that it has truly seen the open source light?
