University press release today describing new research into the
locomotion of soft-bodied insects like caterpillars. By studying the
nervous system and biomechanics of caterpillars the scientists hope to
learn how to build flexible (rather than jointed) robots. Caterpiller
robots could have applications such as crawling through human blood
vessels and organs. As part of the project, the Trimmer
Lab researchers are
subjecting caterpillars to MRI scans, biomaterial testing, 3D
kinematics
studies, electromyography, and hydraulic measurements. They hope to
have
a complete, physics-based computer simulation of the locomotion by
next
year.

photos from the
Exhibition MicroMachine 2003. This 14th International Tradeshow
for Micro/MEMS & Nano Technologies in Japan is currently running from
November
12th - 14th (this week). The
photos show small one inch by one inch robots that use piezo
elements
for micro locomotion.
The little robots also have tiny tools that they can use such as a
micro hammer,
micro grater, dust capturing probe, etc. Electromagnets on the tiny
robot's feet let them lock down
to metal surfaces. The robots were created by
University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo Japan.
I wish I could go to the tradeshow and see all the cool little
robots! Of course,
seeing these cute little robots makes me want to go get some piezo
elements, an 8pin 12C509 pic and
some watch batteries and make one too.

posted a new research paper (PDF
format) that proposes an unusual locomotion method for legged robots.
Ravi Balasubramanian, Matt Mason and other
researcher are attempting to solve the problem of a high-centered
robot
that has become stuck in rough terrain without any contact between the
robot's legs and the ground. Their solution? The robot can use its
legs
as reaction masses to produce "attitude oscillations that result in
incremental translation". They've tested the new locomotion method
using
RHex as well as their own two-legged
"Rocking and Rolling Robot".
