Did NOAA fail to warn South Asian
countries?
12/29/2004 01:40 PMDebate over whether U.S. scientists failed to alert South Asian
countries that a tsunami may be cresting toward their shores has taken
on a harsher edge today. As early as Saturday, instruments at the
Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii, a branch of the National
Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, registered signs that a
"significant earthquake had occurred off the west coast of northern
Sumatra," it admitted in a statement. On Tuesday, Charles McCreery,
director of the center, told the
Los Angeles
Times,"We don't have contacts in our address book for anybody in
that part of the world." As the
Boston
Globe reports today, that comment apparently does not sit well
with Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME), who has launched an investigation
into NOAA procedures: Snowe is "exploring and looking into why NOAA
was not able to provide this valuable, life-saving information to the
11 affected nations," the Senator's spokeswoman, Antonia Ferrier, told
the Globe.

South Korea Bucks Asian Trend of Hotspot
Usage
07/06/2004 11:56 AMChina's hotspot market grows, but users don't follow: The payment
system might be hampering some of the growth of various networks
throughout and near China. The cost also seems incredibly out of line:
China Netcom charges US$3.62 per hour and service must be purchased in
advance using a hard-to-find prepaid card. China Netcom has just about
160 locations, most of which were installed nearly a year ago.
Shanghai Telecom has several hundred hotspots, and pushed usage
initially through an ADSL bundle. China Mobile has nearly 1,500
hotspots, but they allow users to pay via their cellular phone bill
using SMS to confirm purchase of time. South Korea's usage is
mentioned in passing: with tens of thousands of hotspots in that
country, hundreds of thousands of people are regular users....

Microsoft set to sign new deal with UK
government
08/17/2004 06:54 PMMicrosoft is gunning for open source software this week by signing a
new three year deal with the UK Government. Microsoft has indicated
that it will help the public sector get more out of IT by supplying
extra support and services rather than cutting licence fees.
Microsoft's current contract with the UK government is due to expire
early next year. It's not clear what will be in the new deal but it's
likely to be a significant step in the drive for modernising the UK
government.
