There are variety of useful things that could be done
with an LCD on a shopping cart, and not all of them involve
pornography. MSNBC takes a wireless-enable "Shopping Buddy" cart out
for a spin and walks away pretty impressed, finding it to make
shopping a lot more convenient and, surprisingly, fun. Simple things
like being able to place an order in the deli and receive a notice
when its ready to pick up sound great. And emailing a shopping list
from home to the cart? Sign me up. I have left my shopping list at
home literally the last three times I've gone out, and it takes a lot
of effort to remember if I needed a 750ml or 1750ml bottle and whether
or not we needed whippets.

Union Worried About High Tech Shopping
Carts
12/03/2003 12:18 PMWe've had plenty of stories about
high
tech shopping carts, but this latest NPR story (found on
Politech) is a bit surprising. It starts out normally
enough, talking about how everyone loves these new shopping carts that
help them find products they want, while also keeping track of how
much they're spending. The carts also allow for additional features,
such as letting you make "remote" orders to the deli counter while you
shop elsewhere in the store. The odd part, though, is in the later
part of the segment when they talk to a union representative who
complains
about how these terrible shopping carts are going to take away
jobs. You would think, by this point, unions would understand how
technology works, and that if the technology really is useful, their
industry is simply going to change. Fighting against it does no good
for anyone. It just makes consumers less happy while doing nothing to
actually prevent the technology from moving forward. In the meantime,
as wonderful as these shopping carts sound, I'd bet there's going to
be plenty of job openings for folks to repair them. It wasn't that
long ago that shopping carts everywhere started showing up with little
"calculators" to help shoppers total up their purchases. I don't
think I ever saw one that wasn't smashed. Keeping a fully
computerized system running is likely to take a lot more work.

Web services are a distributed computing architecture - as are
Common Object Request Broker (CORBA), Advanced Program-to-Program
Communications (APPC), Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), and dozens
of other preceding architectures. The purpose of a distributed
computing architecture is to enable programs in one environment to
communicate and share data/content with programs in another
environment. In the past, programmers have had to tell one application
program where to go to find another cooperative program (known as
“tightly…

Software
12/08/2003 04:45 PMSmartWorlds software lets PDA users shop and learn more about books
while they're in a bookstore: The service is already in use in Boston
at Trident Booksellers on Newbury Street, with access provided by
Michael Oh's NewburyOpen.net Wi-Fi network. SmartWorlds is now
offering the software free to anyone. Users can punch in the ISBN
number of a book while they're standing in a bookstore. Users are
connected to Amazon.com's site where they can read reviews of the
book, check pricing, and see other books recommended by readers. In
Boston, Trident is considered an affiliate of Amazon so if users of
this service later buy one of the books they browsed for on Amazon,
Trident earns a commission. I'd love to see people use this in the big
chain bookshops which probably wouldn't want people to use it for fear
of losing business....

improving the usability of web based forms without impairing their

the valuable observation that auto-selecting the contents of a form
field when it receives the focus can have a negative effect on the
usability of Unix browsers, where mouse buttons are frequently used
for coping and pasting.
