The Impact of Text vs. Graphics

The Impact of Text vs. Graphics

The Impact of Text vs. Graphics 01/03/2004 05:55 PM

Does the graphic content (or lack thereof) of a site contribute to a feeling of dynamism by site visitors?

When I visit a site heavy on the graphics and Flash, I get a feeling that the site is stagnant, because, as a Web developer, I know how much inertia is involved with changing that stuff. Text, on the other hand, is quick and easy to change, and it imparts the ability for a content development team to react quickly to new information.

Even menus: one of my clients wants me to make the menu options on his site graphical. But it bothers me because I think it makes a site look...slow, portly, lethargic. Text menus, on the other hand, contribute to feeling of agility, reaction, speed. You can slap a new text option on a site quickly in the event you need it. Graphics require a designer to crack open Photoshop or Flash or God knows what.

Is it just me, or does this make sense to anyone else?

SMS Speed Record Sets Guinness World Record

"A 23-year-old Singaporean woman appears to have set a world record for sending text messages over a cellphone, underlining Asia's growing obsession with cellplhone technology.

Kimberly Yeo thumbed 26 words in 43.24 seconds into her phone, beating a world record of 67 seconds for the same words set by a Briton in September 2003, said Singapore's dominant telephone carrier, Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel), on Monday.

Cellphones are an ubiquitous accessory in technology-savvy Singapore where more than four out of five people own a handset, giving the wealthy city-state one of the world's highest cellphone penetration rates.

At a contest in front of a department store on Sunday, Yeo was among 125 people timed by SingTel and a panel of independent officials to see how fast they could type the following 160-character message: 'The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human.'...

Yeo, who won a S$17 500 (about R64 000) in cash for her nimble thumbs, said she sends out about an average of 1 500 text messages a month to friends and family." [iol, via textuall y.org]

Impact of Offshoring

Impact of Offshoring 06/12/2004 08:35 PM

According to a survey commissioned by Bureau of Labor Statistics, just 2.5% of jobs lost are due to offshoring.  AFL-CIO thinks the survey is faulty.  My own experience suggests the number is bigger, at least in the Silicon Valley where I work.  At one company I have worked with for many years, it's engineering department was downsized to barebones and replaced with a large growing team of engineers in India.  2.5%?  Not even close

The Impact Of The Internet In China

The Impact Of The Internet In China 11/12/2003 01:35 PM
China Daily has an interesting article talking about how pervasive the internet has become in China, which reads similar to articles six or seven years ago about internet usage in the US. Of course, I'm a little skeptical of parts of the article that paint internet usage in China as being very "open", letting people experience other cultures. They don't bother to mention that China constantly censors online speech they don't like and have even blocked all access to Google at times. Of course, since this article is written by a Chinese publication, I'm guessing they don't want to bring up things like that out of a fear of getting in trouble themselves. In fact, the article supports the government position by adding quotes saying that the internet is too open in China and that it needs to be more controlled by the government.

Screenshot Impact is a finite element program based on an explicit time stepping algorithm. It can be used to simulate dynamic events such as car crashes or other large deformation events. It is written in Java and is kept very simple, to make it intuitive to use and easy to change and extend. It is very flexible and can handle several different input and output formats.
Changes:
In this release, the cluster solver has been rewritten and simplified, eliminating the memory leakage and snail speed of the previous version. A new solid_iso_4 tetrahedron element has been added with related changes to the GiD interface, allowing import of tetras. The Beam_spring_2 element has been fixed and simplified in function to only work in global coordinates. This is a recommended upgrade from 0.5.3.

Gauging Impact With Digitometrics

Gauging Impact With Digitometrics 06/29/2004 05:51 AM
Gauging Impact With Digitometrics
ht tp://www.sciecom.org/sciecominfo/artiklar/brody_04_2.shtml

While online publishing has the advantage of making an author's work instantly available to millions of people, it also diminishes the author's ability to gauge the impact of that work. Tim Brody, a Ph.D. candidate at the U.K.'s University of Southampton, has been working with a new field called Digitometrics, which combines the results from citation analysis with Web logs. By counting the number of times an article has been downloaded, it's possible to get an idea of its impact. Brody has set up a citation analysis service called Citebase, based on the content in arXiv, a physics subject archive. He anticipates numerous similar services springing up in the Open Access environment. One of the most important aspects of Digitometrics, says Brody, is that it will shift analysts' focus from rating journals to rating specific articles. This in turn may lead to a system of looking for patterns to predict the future impact of an article.

Deep Impact. For Real.

Deep Impact. For Real. 01/02/2005 02:50 AM

This Summer the guys at NASA get to have a little fun. Sometime this month they'll be launching an unmanned spacecraft called Deep Impact. The craft will travel about 268 million miles, park in a safe spot, and launch the Impactor (sounds like another movie title!) which will collide with Comet Tempel 1 on July 4.

If all goes as planned — they're 99 percent sure it'll work — the Impactor will knock a divot out of Tempel 1, which will help NASA scientists learn more about the composition of comets.

This should be great. The mothership will have a ringside seat for the collision and a bevy of cameras and instruments to send lots of data and some great pictures back to Earth.

Asteroid Impact Calculator

Asteroid Impact Calculator 04/13/2004 12:52 PM

Here's a cheerful thought: We're all tooling along, minding our own business, when suddenly an asteroid slams into the earth, wreaking death and destruction in some far-off (or maybe not-so-far-off) place. What effect would the impact, wherever it happened, have here in sunny Sioux Falls, South Dakota?

Leave it to the Department of Planetary Science eggheads at the University of Arizona to put together an online form that will tell you exactly how bad it will be. Just enter a few variables regarding how big the asteroid is, how fast it's travelling, what it's made of, and how far you are from it, and it will spit back at you... "the seismic, blast wave, and thermal effects of an impact as well as the size of the crater produced by the impact."

Does Bruce Willis know about this?
