Surprisingly, a Nice Biz Week Story on
Spectrum
12/12/2003 03:13 PMIt seems like the major business pubs are usually far behind when they
run stories about technological innovation: But this Business Week
story does a nice job of looking at the inefficient way that spectrum
is used today. The story describes smart antennas, mesh networks, and
software-defined radios as technologies that can make better use of
existing spectrum in the future. I'm surprised, however, that the
writer didn't mention ultrawideband technology because it's a
technology that doesn't require just one specific frequency band....

01/23/2004 02:21 PMIEEE Releases One-Millionth Online Technology
Documenthttp:
//www.ieee.org/products/onlinepubs/news/0104_04.htmlThe
IEEE released its
one-millionth online technical document to researchers on 22 January
2004. There are now more than one million full-text technology papers,
articles and standards in
IEEE
Xplore, the delivery system for IEEE online publications. The
milestone document, "Novel Frame Buffer Pixel Circuits for
Liquid-Crystal-on-Silicon Microdisplays," was published in the January
2004 issue of the
IEEE
Journal of Solid-State Circuits. The paper was written by IEEE
Members Sangrok Lee and James C. Morizio and IEEE Fellow Kristina M.
Johnson. The authors are with the Electrical and Computer Engineering
Department, Pratt School of Engineering, at Duke University in Durham,
NC. The paper may be read for free
here (Adobe Acrobat Reader required).
"This
milestone illustrates IEEE's importance as the primary source for
current technical literature." said IEEE publications director Anthony
Durniak. "The publications of IEEE's many Societies and Councils cover
the breadth of today's technology. With IEEE Xplore, we provide
high-tech researchers, scientists, engineers and other users with a
single, convenient source for access to the papers and technology
standards they need to develop tomorrow's technical innovations. The
value of IEEE-published information is demonstrated in the four
million downloads requested by users each month." The IEEE online
collection of technology articles and papers has grown by more than 25
percent over the last 18 months. This includes more than 80,000
archival backfile documents from 1950-1987 added last year.
IEEE publishes 121 journals and magazines and more than 400
conference proceedings titles each year and has 900 active technology
standards. All of this information is available to researchers as
full-text documents through the IEEE Xplore online delivery system.
IEEE Xplore also delivers journals and conference proceedings from the
IEE, the Institution of Electrical Engineers, headquartered in the
United Kingdom.
Access to IEEE online documents is
available through institutional subscriptions, by individual online
article purchase, or through subscriptions available to IEEE
members.

New story of mine online
12/08/2003 11:38 AMMy short story, "Beat Me Daddy (Eight to the Bar)" (which wasn't
included in the
collection,
but is still a personal favorite of mine) was originally published in
the print magazine Black Gate last winter. Now, thanks to the good
graces of Fortean Bureau, an excellent webzine, the story is online
for free in its entirety. This story is my tribute to Wyndham's
post-apocalyptic literature. Here's a taste:
We were the Eight-Bar Band: there was me and my bugle; and Timson,
whose piano had no top and got rained on from time to time; and Steve,
the front-man and singer. And then there was blissed-out, autistic
Hambone, our "percussionist" who whacked things together, more-or-less
on the beat. Sometimes, it seemed like he was playing another song,
but then he'd come back to the rhythm and bam, you'd realise that he'd
been subtly keeping time all along, in the mess of clangs and crashes
he'd been generating.
I think he may be a genius.
Why the Eight-Bar Band? Thank the military. Against all odds, they
managed to build automated bombers that still fly, roaring overhead
every minute or so, bomb-bay doors open, dry firing on our little band
of survivors. The War had been over for ten years, but still, they
flew.
So. The Eight-Bar Band. Everything had a rest every eight bars,
punctuated by the white-noise roar of the most expensive rhythm
section ever imagined by the military-industrial complex.
We were playing through "Basin Street Blues," arranged for bugle,
half-piano, tin cans, vocals, and bombers. Steve, the front-man, was
always after me to sing backup on this, crooning a call-and-response.
I blew a bugle because I didn't like singing. Bugle's almost like
singing, anyway, and I did the backup vocals through it, so when Steve
sang, "Come along wi-ith me," I blew, "Wah wah wah wah-wah wah," which
sounded dynamite. Steve hated it. Like most front-men, he had an ego
that could swallow the battered planet, and didn't want any lip from
the troops. That was us. The troops. Wah-wah.

Why Online Music Download Stores Are
Half Full
01/19/2004 03:04 PMFor all the hype about the various music download stores, people are
still (rightfully so) complaining that many are missing songs from
popular artists, or that certain songs are only available at some
download stores, but not at others. Here's a good explanation of all
the
contractual
difficulties associated with putting songs online for sale at
these download stores. Part of the issue is really just one of legacy
contracts that didn't take into account the potential for downloadable
music stores. While the musicians, lawyers, agents, and record label
execs fight this all out, most people will continue to just use free
file sharing networks instead.

Agere Wants 500 Mbps out of IEEE 802.11n
07/12/2004 02:24 PMAs the IEEE considers 802.11n proposals this week, Agere says 500 Mbps
should be speed goal: Agere is combining MIMO (multiple in, multiple
out antennas) with single and double-wide channel allotments of 20 and
40 MHz. With 40 MHz of spectrum and eight antennas (four transmit,
four receive), they expect to reach 500 Mbps of raw throughput. In 5
GHz, Agere says, they could have 11 double-wide channels, while two
are possible side-by-side in 2.4 GHz. Agere's proposal appears
entirely backwards compatible with the single-wide, 802.11b/g channel
and 2.4 GHz compatibility as a baseline....

security, the chair of the IEEE 802.11 working group said Wednesday.

IEEE Approves Most Recent 802.16
IEEE Approves Most Recent 802.16
06/28/2004 12:59 PM ">The IEEE ratified the 802.16-2004 standard, marking a milestone in
the development of the standard: Still, there's a long way to go. This
article doesn't draw the distinction between 802.16 and WiMax. Now
that the IEEE has ratified what had been called 802.16d, the WiMax
Forum must still release its final specification for WiMax, which will
be essentially a subset of the larger standard. Products built to the
WiMax specification that get approved by the WiMax Forum can be
assured to be interoperable with other WiMax gear. The IEEE
ratification is an exciting milestone but the reality of a WiMax
market in the United States is much farther in the future than some
writers and industry followers acknowledge. This article notes that
WiMax approved equipment should be available early next year. That's
true, but basically all manufacturers will build their first
generation products to operate in frequencies used overseas, not in
the United States. It also remains to be seen how the final
specifications--802.16 and WiMax--will affect folks like Alvarion.
Alvarion is offering products today that it promises to upgrade to
meet the final WiMax specification without additional cost to
customers. Glenn described the whole process a couple weeks ago. One
additional thought on Alvarion's decision to offer free upgrades is
that they've taken a bit of a risk here but didn't have much of a
choice. Some analysts have told me that some vendors are feeling a bit
of a squeeze as potential customers are deciding to wait for certified
WiMax equipment. In the meantime, the vendors aren't selling any gear.
So Alvarion took the risk that they could make a reasonable guess at
what the final specification would look like. They're hoping that they
are close enough that they don't have to make major, expensive
upgrades in the future to make the products WiMax compatible....
MBOA Abandons IEEE--For Now
MBOA Abandons IEEE--For Now
01/28/2004 03:36 PMThe Multiband-OFDM Alliance (MBOA), a group that has been trying to
set an ultrawideband standard within IEEE, is branching out on its
own: The MBOA has failed again to get the necessary 75 percent vote
required to move forward with the standardization process. As a
result, the group has formed a special interest group to promote its
technology. The MBOA blames Motorola for blocking its standardization
push. Motorola is promoting its own version of UWB alongside
XtremeSpectrum, which Motorola acquired last year, but was originally
its separate ally on the matter. Motorola and the MBOA say they'll
move ahead independently. Motorola says its chips will be in
production this quarter, with consumer electronics products with the
chips on the shelves at the end of this year. The MBOA may be just
slightly behind, with silicon available in the last quarter of this
year and products on the market in the second quarter 2005. The MBOA,
however, says it will continue to try to get its technology
standardized within the IEEE....
