Why a Commercial Pilot License?

Why a Commercial Pilot License?

Why a Commercial Pilot License? 01/03/2004 12:14 AM

While reading the bio I posted earlier, Scott asked why I wanted to get a commercial license. Do I plan to try making money by flying gliders? No, not really. Read the rest in my flying blog....

Landscape
06/06/2005 12:14 AM
Lyra Research’s new report, "Commercial Printing: An Overview of Production and Wide-Format," is essential reading for vendors in the commercial printing market. The report focuses on key trends in commercial printing, including sharp increases in sales of eco-solvent or mild solvent wide-format printers, declining prices for wide-format devices, and inexpensive Chinese wide-format printer products entering the European and U.S. markets. On the narrow-format side, acquisitions by key players have taken center stage. [PRWEB May 18, 2005]

The almost pilot

The almost pilot 06/15/2004 07:43 PM
My new schedule of going back and forth between Nantucket and New York City means a lot of buses (blech) and a lot of flying (yay!). The last two trips I've been super lucky on Cape Air and I've sat in the co-pilot's seat. Cape Air flies Cessna 402's with a single pilot, meaning one lucky passenger each trip gets to sit up front in the co-pilot's seat. And lately that's been me! Taking off this afternoon from Logan Airport in Boston was especially fun because our little plane taxied along the runway with all the big jets, including an Air France 747. And since I can see all the dials and knobs, and there's a yoke right in my lap, it's like I'm almost the pilot. Except I don't really know how to fly. But I watch the air speed and altitude nonetheless. I've always loved flying, and these recent trips in small planes remind me just how much I love it. I think I'd really like to Learn to Fly. And then maybe someday I'll go from the almost pilot to the pilot pilot. Roger that!

When I travel, I usually write everything that's super important to me down on a 8.5x11 piece of paper, fold it twice, and stick it in my pocket. That way, when I need to look up a phone number or jot down an address, I don't have to get out a notebook, my computer, or hunt around for a piece of scrap paper. And it won't ever get stolen like a cell phone or handheld might.

NYT discovers the "Plam Pilot"
phenomenon

NYT discovers the "Plam Pilot"
phenomenon
01/28/2004 02:34 PM
In August, 2001, I wrote Metacrap, an essay about the problems with user-generated, explicit metadata, where I said,
Take eBay: every seller there has a damned good reason for double-checking their listings for typos and misspellings. Try searching for "plam" on eBay. Right now, that turns up nine typoed listings for "Plam Pilots." Misspelled listings don't show up in correctly-spelled searches and hence garner fewer bids and lower sale-prices. You can almost always get a bargain on a Plam Pilot at eBay.
A couple years later, the NYT has twigged to this, reporting on bargain hunters who search eBay listings for typos.
Such is the eBay underworld of misspellers, where the clueless -- and sometimes just careless -- sell labtop computers, throwing knifes, Art Deko vases, camras, comferters and saphires.

They do get bidders, but rarely very many. Often the buyers are those who troll for spelling slip-ups, buying items on the cheap and selling them all over again on eBay, but with the right spelling and for the right price. John H. Green, a jeweler in Central Florida, is one of them.

FireTide Talks about Pilot Locations

FireTide Talks about Pilot Locations 12/02/2003 02:33 PM
FireTide starts talking about its pilot rollout of a mesh wired replacement, its shipping date, and the cost: In a briefing yesterday, FireTide said that it had successfully rolled out over a dozen pilot locations using its HotPoint mesh routing system, including an airport, a museum, and a park. FireTide's 802.11b system, which costs $799 (suggested retail price) per node, uses mesh networking algorithms to automatically create an optimum route wirelessly between nodes without customer intervention. Each node has two Ethernet ports, which can support wireless access points from any vendor, or any other Ethernet-enabled equipment. The company is based in Los Gatos, Calif., and Honolulu, and has worked with firms close to home. The Hotel Los Gatos already had Wi-Fi in its rooms, but not in public areas or meeting rooms. Company vice president Barbara Cardillo said that they were able to have the hotel's public areas up and running in an afternoon with six HotPoints. The Los Gatos Opera House wanted to extend itself to businesses for meetings, but they lacked interior connectivity. A few HotPoints later, linked to a business DSL in an office in the building, and the Opera House is now open for commerce. At the Kahalui Airport, where the FAA and USDA perform extensive testing to avoid planes carrying invasive species in and out of Hawaii, Cardillo said the airport faced a particular set of issues: lots of low buildings separated by tarmacs with no connectivity among them. The airport said it would cost $150,000 to connect the buildings with wire, and would shut down various runways during construction. An integrator came in and installed 11 HotPoints for about $20,000 to fully enable the airport's baggage claim, baggage handling, and offices; hardware cost about 25 percent of the total. FireTide is also working with a company that brings PET scans--a next-generation version of the MRI--in semi-trucks to hospitals around the country. The company found that getting data from the scanner into the hospital required annoying efforts each time because the same parking space wasn't always available, and the only option they'd pursued was stringing Ethernet cable. Now, with a few HotPoints, the semi is linked right into the hospital network. Because HotPoint is just an Ethernet replacement, the hospital and firm can overlay whatever security they need on the link layer. FireTide also announced its partnership and reseller program. The company will not sell...
