2003: Year of Change?

2003: Year of Change? 01/04/2003 02:06 PM
Happy New Year. I've updated my RSS article to show some new sites using the parser. There are a few more I will be adding when they go live. I've received many ideas by talking to users of the parser through e-mail. I've also realized the parser is brought to it's knees when called multiple times on the same page. I have made a version of the parser that fixes this issue, and I will release it along with a few other fixes/features soon. If you would like that version of the parser now in its beta state, drop me an e-mail and I will send it to you. I've been tinkering with idea of redoing the design here. I would like to implement something more interactive and not so bland. I like the dynamic nature of the Outside Reading section, and would like more of that sort of thing. I envision a site that would dynamically and interactively immerse you in the blogging experience, while maintaining usability and accessibility through proper XHTML/CSS/DOM coding. I have the ideas and coding ability, but a creative on the design front, so the redesign may be slow coming. I'd appreciate any ideas. Speaking of redesigns, Stonefishspine has gone through a lot of behind the scenes changes, detailed here. I envy Mr. Nelson, proprietor of the Stonefish, I really do. He has stripped his site of the impersonal automation of a CMS, something I've wanted to do for some time now. I use pMachine (as did Stonefish), which while a very good blogging system, it is sort of overkill for my uses. I've become dependent on it for the current design of ReadingEd.com, but any redesign I hinted at above would be sans such a system. I apologize for the lack of updates lately. After the holiday season I've been knee deep in an intranet application I've been developing for work. The RSS parser update will be coming soon, as well as a release of the pMachine commenting system I developed.

2003: Year of Apache

2003: Year of Apache 01/11/2004 07:54 AM
Netcraft's numbers for the new year are in. The trend graphs tell a story: 2003 was the Year of Apache. If Time magazine had a server-of-the-year award the cover would be featuring a feather. Since October 2002 market share has grown from 53% to 64%, a 20% gain while Microsoft IIS, its nearest competitor has shrunk from 36% to 24%, a 33% decline. The change in server totals was even more dramatic. Apache HTTP Server increased from about 20 million to 32 million (+60%) while all other competitors remained flat. What are the driving factors behind this trend?

The Year in Books 2003
http://publishersweekly.reviewsnews.com/index.asp ?layout=article&articleid=CA336073

The books of 2003 reflected a return to relative normality after the emotional and financial fallout of 9/11, which meant a publishing year characterized by both the predictable and the unexpected. If one name emerged from the Fiction pack, it was Dan Brown; if one theme dominated Nonfiction, it was the Iraq War and its aftermath.

The editors responsible for the following discussions and Best Books lists are: Fiction, Natasha Wimmer, Emily Chenoweth and Jeff Zaleski; Mystery, Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror, Peter Cannon; Mass Market, Brianna Yamashita; Comics, Calvin Reid, Heidi MacDonald and Douglas Wolk; Nonfiction, Sarah Gold, Lynn Andriani, Mark Rotella, Michael Scharf, Emily Chenoweth and Marcela Valdes; Illustrated Books, Michael Scharf; Lifestyle, Mark Rotella; Poetry, Michael Scharf; Religion, Jana Reiss.

See their "best books" in the following categories Fiction, Comics, Mystery, SF/Fantasy/Horror, Mass Market , Nonfiction, Ilustrated Books, Lifestyle, Poetry: Found in Translation, and Religion.
