Linux Sees Open Field for Open Source
(washingtonpost.com)

washingtonpost.com - Plenty of tech experts have spent years trying to convince the general public that the Linux operating system is becoming more of a threat to Microsoft's Windows. With the LinuxWorld conference underway this week in San Francisco, there is finally a sure-fire sign that this may be the case: Microsoft won't be there.

Eugene, Ore.-based GarageGames doesn't just benefit from the open source philosophy, it embraces it -- an odd thing for a company in an industry that traditionally thrives on closed technology and secrets, and where marketers often dictate development. On April 20 GarageGames released the Torque Network Library (TNL) technology behind the Torque Game Engine's multiplayer network code under the GPL license.

Linux and open source opportunities in
the Mideast

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- Computers and the Internet are just starting to penetrate the Mideast, and since most residents of most countries here are dirt-poor, Linux and open source are "naturals" for the region. There is also a fast-growing market for Arabic-language commercial software (or software services based on open source applications), and it seems that half of the region's governments have decided their country should become "the" developer of Arabic-language software. Saudi Arabia, where I'm writing this, is pouring massive government funds into an effort to build a software industry. But it's possible that cultural and political factors may be more important than government aid in encouraging software development. If this is so, Saudi Arabia may be wasting its money, and should look at changing its society instead. Note: This is #5 in a series of five "Dispatches from Saudi Arabia." You may want to see #1, #2, #3, and #4 before you read this one.

As if the largest software company in the world as an opponent was not enough, the Linux and open source software industry is facing some of its biggest challenges in containing the proliferation of its own licenses and updating a 15-year-old GPL. Both hurdles were roundly discussed during sessions at the recent OSDL Enterprise Linux Summit, but there appeared to be no easy answers nor easy solutions to either licensing issue.

Rather than try to make the usual sweeping predictions about what the future holds for the computer hardware and software industries or even just for Linux and open source, I'm going to make some predictions about how tech news will be covered in the next year. Let's start by saying a minimum of 5000 articles (give or take 4900) will be written in 2004 declaring Linux "finally ready for the desktop," up from 3000 (give or take 2900) similar articles in 2003.

As I’ve said many times before, Open Source is quite a big business. Well, it looks as if Open Source is also pretty darn big in in the retail arena as well. Having their foothold in a store that sells software that sells anything but Microsoft products is certainly a different approach to be sure….

Open-source activists gathered at LinuxWorld Expo late last week to protest what they say are anti-Linux campaigns being spearheaded on Capitol Hill by rivals the SCO Group and Microsoft. Thursday evening, Linux lobbyists, academics, programmers and ISVs predicted the political battle will heighten as Linux gains ground on the desktop, and as governments worldwide--including the U.S. federal government and several U.S. states--consider adopting open-source procurement policies.
