Bots and Humans Play Together

Bots and Humans Play Together
http://snipurl.com/3m2e

Joining a pickup ball game is a good way to get to know people. It might also be a good way for humans and robots to learn to work together. To that end, CMU researchers are putting together mixed teams for soccer, with the Segway scooter as the common denominator.

BoingBoing reader Roland points us to this:
Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), working under a grant from DARPA, are putting humans riding Segway scooters and robots built on Segway bases on the same soccer team in the hope to encourage the kind of cooperation that leads to understanding between the both. Technology Research News has the story. This could lead to autonomous robot vehicles sharing the roadway with human-driven vehicles or robot building construction crews. Robots designed for specific applications could become practical in 5 to 10 years. Robots that interact with other robots and humans in general applications will take longer -- at least 20 years. This overview contains additional details and pictures of a human and a Segway robot playing together.

So cial Network Bot.

IRC Junkie reports of PieSpy 0.4.0:

piespyThose who like toys, or are interested in social networks will like this bot. It is a “social network bot“ which renders diagrams that show the social structure of a channel.

“I’ve just released PieSpy version 0.4.0” PieSpy coder Paul Mutton said to IRCJunkie. “It will probably never reach 1.0, as
that’s just the way I version things :)”

This new version contains the tracking of nick changes, “which was the most popular feature request” , and faster rendering of the images showing the social networks.

“You can now apply different weightings to each of the heuristics that are used to infer relationships and the source code has been refactored so it is now very easy to make your own inference heuristics” , Paul adds.

You can find PieSpy here.
O’Reilly will release a book shortly by Paul Mutton, “IRC Hacks, 100 Industrial-Strength Tips & Tools”.

This fits in well with the hecklebot and dashboard - two other kind of botty IRcy thingies.

Bluetooth Bots 09/02/2004 05:14 PM
A David Pescovitz article in the TheFeature.com describes the use of the Bluetooth protocol in robotics. Among the robots mentioned are a bio-inspired, vision-based robot blimp from the Autonomous Systems Lab of the EPFL and the Seiko-Epson mini helicopter robot that we reported on last month. Ironically, support for Bluetooth, which has never achieved much popularity, was dropped by Ericsson recently.

Booth Bots?

Booth Bots? 07/26/2004 11:08 PM
Instead of booth babes, geeks at the 2004 AAAI National Conference may be seeing booth bots. Robots particpating in the annual Robot Competition and Exhibition will be required to work in the vendor booths at the convention as part of the contest. The robots will have to register themselves for the conference, find their assigned booth, and interact with human particpants doing things such as escorting them to destinations within meeting hall. Each robot will also have to arrive at a pre-scheduled time and location to present a talk to the humans. A CMU press release says that Grace and George, a pair of social robots developed by researchers at CMU and two other labs, will be working the show.

400,000 Vacuum Bots by 2006?

400,000 Vacuum Bots by 2006? 11/11/2003 01:16 AM
CNN has an article touting Hitachi's vacuum robot. Yeah, yeah, "big deal" I said to myself. But, what was really interesting to me; was that in the article it states that a UN study says that the vacuum cleaner robot sales are to soar to over 400k units by 2006. I'm aware that this has been reported before and also again back in the past, but when the numbers hit me... Wow! But, me without a robot vacuum company and in 2006 there'll be sales of 400k vacuum robots! That really... [no... I refrain]. Despite their high price tag, (well, actually the price of at least one isn't so bad) it appears that people love their home vacuum bots, and time is getting scarce. There could be also be as many as 125k lawn-mower bots, and up to 1.5 million robot toys like Sony's AIBO robotic dog in just a couple years. Wow, big numbers, I know, but still the magnatitude finally hit me and I guess I was a little stunned, and maybe it WAS a little surprising to me. Is it just me? I guess it's time for me to dust off my vacuum bot designs and get on the bandwagon - there's money to be made and time's a wastin.

Hackers Use People as Bots

Hackers Use People as Bots 01/29/2004 02:49 AM

Cory Doctorow describes how some creative hackers are using people as bots to workaround 'captchas', images of distorted text, which is used to protect against bots by websites such as Hotmail and Register.com.

The ingenious crack is to offer a free porn site which requires that you key in the solution to a captcha -- which has been inlined from Yahoo or Hotmail -- before you can gain access. Free porn sites attract lots of users around the clock, and the spammers were able to generate captcha solutions fast enough to create as many throw-away email accounts as they wanted.

The darkside aside, I am impressed by their ingenuity.  But then I guess it is easy to think outside the box if you were never inside the box to begin with.

Bots-Only Poker Tournament

Bots-Only Poker Tournament 06/17/2005 03:45 PM

If our las t post on bots in online poker is any indication, a lot of you might be interested in this LA Times Article:

The march of the machines will be celebrated in Las Vegas next month with the world's first money tournament for robots โ€” and the $100,000 prize is drawing a handful of coders out of anonymity.

The emerging technology does more than raise the stakes for real people and online casinos. It also raises fundamental questions about how far computers have come in mimicking and improving on human behavior, and about how far they can go in the future.

The article goes on to quote some AI folks stating that getting a computer to master poker will probably drive AI forward far more than a computer winning chess or backgammon, since it's such a psychological game, and involves understanding human patterns.

Sadly, this poker tournament will not include my favorite parts of a local Texas Hold'em tournament. Namely, eating too many chips and laughing so hard that I nearly fall out of my chair.

Bless the maker, I think this Air Force patrol robot is giving birth to a smaller, tracked robot. Oh, it is! That's it, I don't care if this guard bot can shoot missiles or distinguish between hostile or friendly targets; hell, it could kill us all on a lark for all I care. Military robots giving birth to smaller robots? Let's order dozens immediately.

Thomas Burick on the Future of PC Bots

Thomas Burick on the Future of PC Bots 01/09/2004 11:23 PM
RoboticsTrends.com has posted a recent interview with Thomas Burick of White Box Robotics. According to the interview, it turns out Thomas got his start with the venerable Heathkit Hero robots. The interview provides some background on Burick as well as details on White Box Robotics' 912 series of PC based robots. If you haven't seen the 912 robots yet, take a look - they're some of the nicest looking robots currently available. They're based on the VIA Mini-ITX motherboard. The consumer version of the robots will ship with Windows and proprietary control software from Evolution robotics but the article suggests that a lower-cost "bare-bones" version might be available without the expensive software licenses for robot experimenters and researchers who want to run Linux and one of the more developer-friendly Open Source control systems.

VIA Technologies Demos Bots in Las Vegas

VIA Technologies Demos Bots in Las Vegas 11/19/2003 11:42 AM
Linux Electrons says that VIA Technologies is demoing PC-Bots this week in Las Vegas. Via Technologies is a maker of Mini-ITX motherboards and has taken initiative in working with the robotics community to power the Robotics Revolution. Mini-ITX boards allow robots to utilize the powerful of x86 platform but still allow for efficient power and small size. These tiny PC boards are compatible with Linux or the Windows platforms and are great for robotics. The powerful PC-Bots that were showcased were the 912 Robot by White Box and the IO from RoboDynamics. They even had a robot petting zoo for the kiddies. If your robot is not PC based, perhaps now would be a great time to upgrade and make your bot be a PC-bot too?

Security Guard UVS Patrol Bots

Security Guard UVS Patrol Bots 11/10/2003 10:56 PM
You're starting to see them, right? The robot security guard with the yellow flashing light on top? CBC in Canada has an article about the U.S. military seeking robotic technology made-in-Canada. Unmanned Vehicle Systems (UVS), are the guard/sentrys of the future and the american military seems to be a big user of this technology. Cerkits Corporation Inc. in Canada has created robots such as MAGS (Mobile Autonomous Guard System) and The Prowler to fulfill these guard and sentry needs. At $85k each, these robots may not perform as well as a human would, but they're easier to cover the landscape with for guarding things like oil pipelines, fence lines, and parking lots and allows for fewer human casualties. So, you always thought that if you ever needed a job, you could always take a low paying security guard job? That may not always be the case in the future. Expect to see more robot security guards watching your every move and while giving you the freedom to search out higher paying jobs.

XAML is for humans

XAML is for humans 11/10/2003 11:12 PM

Don Box: Today, the data needed to initialize an object graph is hidden behind imperative statements in your programming language of choice. That makes it difficult to tease out of the rest of your program without weird markers in the source code to delimit the structure of your code into recognizable pieces.

My previous post on this subject had more to it, but I chickened out and didn't post it.  What the heck, I could be wrong, but... here's essentially what I said.
