The Death of the Irish Pub? "The smoking ban is the work of one man, Michael Martin, the Minister for Health and Children, and one of nature's killjoys... He is generally thought to regard the banning of nicotine from Irish pubs as a personal crusade, explaining that he once tried smoking but didn't enjoy it."

The ban was scheduled to start today, but has been delayed until March. It's one thing to have smoking banned in California and New York, but what's the point of pub that's not dark and smoky? And Scotland might be next...

Sneezing and Wheezing

Sneezing and Wheezing 04/09/2004 04:10 PM
The oogies were creeping into my body last night, but I seemed to have staved off the attack successfully with a non-drug I can barely pronounce. Veronica told me about Oscillococcinum a few months ago, but I didn't have the opportunity to use it. My sweetheart got the sicky-poos before I did (thanks to Mr. Myszka, who inherited it from our other friend, Mr. Class Ring). These homeopathic remedies aren't too bad. I definitely need to creep to the store to pick up more this afternoon. Why not now? Because Mr. UPS Man delivered Mr. Unreal Tournament 2004 DVD Special Edition a few minutes ago. I may never see the light of day again....

Hapless Wi-Fi Crackers Head to Pokey

Hapless Wi-Fi Crackers Head to Pokey 06/07/2004 07:00 PM
Crackers who break into Lowe's over-exposed Wi-Fi network start pleading: The first two members of a three-man ring have agreed to plea bargains in a case that revealed how poor Lowe's external wireless LAN security was. While there's no excuse for cracking, Lowe's network allowed them to gain access at several locations, at which point these three allegedly (two have stipulated, one is still alleged) installed credit-card capturing software among other acts. Lowe's security team noticed the activity, monitored it, and worked with police to stage the arrests. Sentencing is yet to come, and the third man will be arraigned later this month. Interestingly, the plea bargain includes their cooperation in explaining what they did. That's surely not useful at this point: eight months after the attacks, you have to hope that Lowe's has completely overhauled every element of their external-facing systems and intrusion detection monitoring....

Will Any Voice Chat Software Be Taxed?

Will Any Voice Chat Software Be Taxed? 07/26/2004 12:14 PM
Following New Hampshire's attempt to tax IM, and a recent VoIP legislation amendment that opened up any voice chat related application to taxation, Declan McCullough is noticing that politicians appear to be moving closer to taxing any software that allows voice chat, in order to put more dollars in the universal service fund. Now, increasing universal access isn't a bad thing, but why should software that has nothing to do with the telephony system be forced to support the telephony system? As the article suggests, it's like taxing cars to support horse troughs. It's yet another situation where an older technology feels they deserve fees from a newer technology because they can't figure out how to compete and avoid becoming obsolete.

About the Emergent Democracy Worldwide session at the Digital Democracy Teach-In, the Head Lemur says,

This may be the single most important seminar of this conference. Participation in Emergent Democracy requires a computer and an internet connection. This is the bottom line. Where you can go from there is limited only by your desire and participation. While we have this group of folks in the building, let's lower the bar bills and increase the participation in emergent democracy.

Then he adds a suggestion: A computer roadshow. Interesting idea.

Will A Bidding Process Be Applied To
Jobs?
09/17/2004 02:31 PM
Roland Piquepaille writes "Two U.S. hospitals, one in Ayer, Massachusetts, and another one in Chicago, have found an innovative way to deal with nursing shortage. They post shift openings and the highest hourly rate they're willing to pay. Then, the nurses bid online for these extra shifts. The lowest bidders get the shifts and are notified by e-mail. The software behind the process, named eShift and marketed by FlexEstaff, is raising eyebrows at nurses associations. Still, FlexEstaff is negotiating with 8 more hospitals. This bidding process is almost certainly a good thing for the hospitals, but is it good for the nurses? Will we soon other industries adopt auction systems? Imagine a company telling you, "Hey, you want to make some extra dollars by building this car or writing this piece of software? Name your price, and you'll make some more cash." What do you think of this bidding process? Read more before posting your comments. Techdirt carried a similar story back in Decemmber 2003, "Techdir t:Nurses Bidding On Their Work Schedule, Hourly Pay Rate. But it didn't answer my basic question: what will happen if this process is adopted by other industries?"

Also, the pessimism in popular songs and newsmagazzins predicted decreased consumer optimism and economic recession.
