year ago I was sidelined by a pinched nerve, which resulted in surge
ry and a long
recuperation. Today I celebrated my recovery by running my first
half-marathon.
Now, I wish I could report that I ran at a record pace, but the
truth is that I ran veerrry slowly. At about the fifth mile I started
having trouble with my ili
otibial band, and no amount of stretching seemed to help. So
rather than run a speedy race, I slowed to a 10-minute-mile pace and
spent much of the run watching people twice as old - and twice as wide
- pass me by. Still, given that a year ago I was down for the count
after neck surgery, I feel pretty good that I finished at all.
I feel even better about the fact that my kids were there to see me
finish. Last year, I hated them seeing me wearing a neck brace,
unable to turn my head or even pick them up. This year, as I crossed
the finish line I spotted my kids holding hand-made "Go Dady" signs,
and I can't describe how great that made me feel. The only thing
better than that was lifting myself into the stands to give my wife a
well-deserved (and very salty) kiss.
PS: A special thanks to my best friends Kevin and Shima, who made
sure my favorite beer was waiting for me outside the event. Nice one,
folks :)
Unreal Recovery
Unreal Recovery
04/20/2004 11:14 AMI planned to watch a ton of DVDs while recovering from surge
ry, but instead I've been blasting away at anything that moves in
Unreal Tournament
2004 (UT2004). I have a recliner set up in front of my computer
which keeps my neck supported - not exactly a great position for real
computer work, but good enough for fragging.
I used to be addicated to games, but after the birth of my son four
years ago I decided time was too precious to waste on video games, so
I gave them up. Now that I'm (temporarily!) hooked on games again,
I'm stunned at how far they've progressed. UT2004 is light years
ahead of the games I used to play. If other software progressed as
fast as video games, Windows Longhorn would
already be outdated.

Movin' On Up in The Jobless Recovery:

Movin' On Up in The Jobless Recovery:
Not!
01/01/2004 11:00 PM Good Bye, Horatio Alger The other day I found
myself reading a leftist rag that made outrageous claims about
America. It said that we are becoming a society in which the poor tend
to stay poor, no matter how hard they work; in which sons are much
more likely to inherit the socioeconomic status of their father than
they were a generation ago. The name of the leftist rag?
Business Week, which published an article titled
"Waking Up From the American Dream." The article summarizes
recent research showing that social mobility in the United States
(which was never as high as legend had it) has declined considerably
over the past few decades. If you put that research together with
other research that shows a drastic increase in income and wealth
inequality, you reach an uncomfortable conclusion: America looks more
and more like a class-ridden society. And guess what? Our political
leaders are doing everything they can to fortify class inequality,
while denouncing anyone who complains--or even points out what is
happening--as a practitioner of "class warfare." So how
do you move on up in the
jobless recovery, anyhow?
