Tucows's ethical expired domain auction

Tucows's ethical expired domain auction 09/08/2004 08:06 PM
Cory Doctorow: Tucows is starting a service to auction off expired domain names, but with an escape hatch to ensure that the former holders of the expired domains don't get scr0d.
Yet, Tucows plans to protect the previous registrant's existing rights because even if a URL enters the auction, the old registrant still has a window of opportunity to retain the name under the system. Noss said Tucows plans to "hold the name in escrow for another 30 days" on top of a period of "anywhere from one to 45 days" that a former registrant has to reclaim their domain name after expiry, depending on which registrar they're dealing with.

Expired domain names from once popular websites are still listed in the major search engines, have a large number of links, and continue to receive traffic. ExpiredDomainTraffic.Net provides a way for even the smallest site operators to capitalize on these highly targeted visitors at an appreciably lower cost than using PPC search engine listings. QuickTime MPEG-2 Component Expired

QuickTime MPEG-2 Component Expired 12/16/2003 02:53 PM
As reported by Mac FixIt, we have confirmed that QuickTime's MPEG-2 component (an additional purchase made by several users which allowed the playback of MPEG-2 files) expired on December 14th, 2003, leaving thousands of users without the ability to play MPEG-2 files. We have also confirmed that a re-install of the component has no effect.

Update: Repairing permissions has no effect.

Update: Several MacFixIt readers are reporting that the MPEG-2 component for QuickTime 6.3 is working properly. This problem may only be related to the new MPEG-2 component released for QuickTime 6.4.

Treasure hunter

Treasure hunter 12/22/2004 01:30 AM
David Pescovitz: In the December issue of my favorite print magazine Smithsonian, my old friend/Wired editor Michael Behar has a great article about Robert Graf, a treasure hunter seeking a centuries-old pirate's booty. The multimillion-dollar treasure might be hidden in a stone vault now underwater in the Seychelles. Then again, it might not be.
When I arrive on Mahé, it's easy to spot Graf in the crowd at the airport. He's the only guy wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the classic pirate ensign—a skull and crossbones. Tanned and fit, the treasure hunter seems relaxed—hardly what you'd expect from someone who has spent a third of his life obsessed with a long-dead pirate. Yet Graf is no laid-back islander. He's in-your-face intense right from the start. I'd barely heaved my suitcase into the trunk of his rusty compact car when he launched into a breathless retelling of how he'd voyaged some 10,000 miles from his Colorado home, married a Seychellois hotel reservations manager and spent more than $450,000 of his own money looking for a treasure that others have failed to find here for nearly a century.

Let’s start with Phillip Wagstrom’s deb ut: If you've got something with a Sun logo on it that's not working right, you call me; once again, a window into a world I don’t know. Moving on, David Ogren gives us tasty little bite of blog-propaganda. Jon Haslam shows us how to use the incredibly-advanced features of Solaris to torture tcsh users, but then spoils it by admitting to being a miserably-deluded ksh devotee (Everybody Knows bash is the One True Shell). On the lighter side, Steve Lau calculates the cost of commuting, and Henry Jia survives some tests including “pass through electric grid” and “get treasure from boiled liquid”—with these guys on our side, how can we lose? To end on a serious note, Simon Phipps points to a remarkably beautiful video (watch it more than once) and Alec Muffet reflects on, well, life and how to live it.

After reading a forum post yesterday inquiring about DSL vs. cable download speeds (specifically Cox Cable), I though Id write about one of OS Xs more underappreciated applications. Lets face it. For most people, dial-up just doesnt cut it anymore, and for some, cable speeds still arent enough. While Safari and Camino have taken care of many gripes about page...

iPod Firmware Petition

iPod Firmware Petition 07/22/2004 01:22 PM
With the recent release of the 4G iPods, Apple released an iPod firmware update adding new features/functionality to the iPod. Unfortunately, the new features are only available to 4G ("click wheel") iPods?leaving the not-so-old 3G iPods in the dust. When I first heard about this, my first response was, "Why can?t they just release the same firmware upgrade for both the 3G and 4G models?" I don?t know about models older than 3G, but as far as I know, the new model is exactly the same as the 3G. The firmware could easily work for both. This seems to be a marketing ploy on Apple?s part. Get the people who want these simple new features to buy a whole new iPod. Well, people aren?t buying it. Enter the Apple iPod Firmware Petition, signed by over 3,000 people when this entry was posted, which states the following:
To: Apple Computer We, the owners of previous models of the Apple iPod (1G/2G/3G), believe that we have been snubbed by Apple. With each new generation some or many of the new features added are only software changes, and could be easily added to past iPods with a firmware update. But instead of updating older iPods, Apple has simply ignored older users. We believe that any new improvements that can be added via firmware to the older generation iPods should be instituted Sincerely, The Undersigned
Being a 3G 15GB owner myself, I must agree. How about you?
