11/18/2003 10:28 AMMicrosoft Corp. next year plans to launch a music download service,
going up against Apple Computer Inc.'s iTunes and many other services
peddling music online. Microsoft has been considering a music download
service and said in July that plans were in the very early stages, if
they could be called plans at all. Microsoft Chairman and Chief
Software Architect Bill Gates at the time said he did not see a music
service as a money-making service.

The Register is reporting that Sony will be launching a new
music service specifically for its PSP portable gaming system. The new
download service is supposed to be in place by March here to coincide
with the launch of Sony's player. Tony Smith speculates that the
service, once in place, could just as easily be used to push video
content down to the device, which doesn't have a hard drive, but can
accept flash MemoryStick in 1-2GB sizes—plenty big for a couple
of movies.
I think if Sony's got a shot at the iPod, the PSP is it—it
can do almost everything you'd want to do while on the road, including
productivity stuff (if they release a keyboard).

Sony
launched a noninfringing music downloading service,
entering a growing market still dominated by Apple's iTunes and
including a revised Napster .
Connect is based on a downloadable client ,
offers more than five hundred thousand songs, and offers
now-traditional pricing: ninety-nine cents per song, with a
subscription option. Additionally, Connect is appealing to
indepedent labels for more content. As with iTunes, a digital
rights management ( DRM
) application,
MagicGate DRM , restricts sharing of downloaded music files.
Connect's file format, ATRAC 3 , is
not compatible with the popular iPod portable music player.
The desktop client
is available for Windows machines only.

11/17/2003 11:10 PMWell, this should be a surprise to absolutely no one, but Microsoft
has now officially
confirmed their plans to offer a me-too music download service
as part of their MSN properties. I'm almost surprised it's getting
any news coverage at all - but when you mention Microsoft you get
press. The thing that's interesting to me is that very few people are
asking questions about how these hundred or so music download services
are going to fit together. If I buy a CD from Tower Records, it's the
same CD that I buy from a little independent music shop down the
street or that I order online from Amazon. That's not the case with
all these download stores. Each one has different formats and
different restrictions - making the whole space one big mess. Why
should I bother wading in when I have no idea if the music I buy will
actually be useful to me in a year?

Xeni Jardin:
MSN Music launched today.
From a CBS Marketwatch report:
Microsoft on Wednesday unveiled details of a new service for
downloading digital music, placing it squarely in competition with
Apple's rival iTunes music service. Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft
will launch a preview version of its new MSN Music service tomorrow
that will allow users to legally download songs mostly for 99 cents
each. The service will also make entire albums available, the majority
of which will cost $9.99, the company said. Microsoft's push into the
arena for downloadable music trails Apple's hugely successful iPod
digital music player and its own iTunes music service. Apple also
charges 99 cents for each song downloaded through iTunes.

Penn State begins free music download

Penn State begins free music download
service for students
01/18/2004 02:46 PM
On January 12, the University of Pennsylvania began
providing its on campus student body free access to Napster 2.0's subscription
music service through a campus-wide contract with Napster. The contract allows students to listen to
streaming audio or "tethered downloads" for free. (Tethered downloads
are downloaded music files that will only play as long as the user
maintains a subscription to Napster, or in this case, as long as the
student remains at Penn State.) Alternately, students can pay 99Ā¢ a
track to burn songs to disk or transfer them to a mp3 player.
According to the
Chronicle of Higher Education (subscription required) other
schools are watching the experiment
closely to see if the availability of free legal music downloads will
reduce illegal file sharing on campus. As part of the contract,
Napster has provided local caching servers for about 90 percent of the
most requested songs which is expected to improve performance and
reduce network congestion. According to Penn State Live , almost
3000 students (of 17,000 eligible students) registered for the service
on the first day, streaming or downloading about 100,000 songs. No
network congestion was reported.
