D-Bracket
12/17/2004 06:43 PMI spent last night trying to get a new motherboard to work.
If you've ever done this, you're probably familiar with the situation
where you get everything put together, all the wires connected, you
fire up the board, and nothing happens. It's pretty frustrating, since
the motherboard knows what's wrong, but it can't tell you since
getting the video card started is one of the last steps of the
system's startup routine. Most boards have little beep codes that try
to telegraph the problem (ie 3 long, 2 short equals bad RAM), but it's
a pain to try to catch the beeps.
Fortunately, I was installing an MSI board that comes with something called a D-Bracket.
This little doodad plugs to the motherboard and installs in an empty
PCI bracket on the back of the case. It has 4 LED's that flash different
codes across as the system goes through different stages of the
POST routine. Bingo! Now
I can easily tell exactly what's causing the problem. Very
impressive.
This is the first MSI board I've worked with. The manual sucked,
but the rest of the package has lots of nice little extra touches like
that.

Tournament Pool and Bracket Tracker
0.2.0 (Default branch)
03/14/2005 06:20 PM

Tournament Pool and Bracket Tracker contains
everything you need to run a tournament pool. It
supports small groups or organizations who wish to
provide an NCAA basketball tournament pool without
a lot of administrative work in calculating
up-to-date results and possibilities. Though it
was built with the NCAA tournament in mind, it
should be able to handle most other sport
tournament pools. Once a tournament is underway,
users can keep track of their progress as the
administrator for a tournament updates the results
of games. Pool adminstrators can choose from many
different scoring systems.
Changes:
This release added information on setting up the men's and women's
NCAA 2005 Tournaments. You can no longer edit brackets that have been
assigned to a pool for a tournament that is underway, and you can now
add a bracket to a pool directly from the edit page if the bracket is
completed. The view bracket page now computes a score using the
default score system and color codes brackets against actual results.

on the future of the PDF and competing platforms that have developed
to knock PDF of its perch.
Yet it has its share of critics who complain that it's not
the most effective digital distribution method. Among its most famous
broadsides was Jakob Nielsen's June, 2001 Alert Box column in which he
concluded that the PDF was great for printing out documents, but lousy
for online reading. Others complain about Acrobat Reader's load time,
especially on Web sites. In spite of these criticisms, the PDF has
solidified its place as the leader in electronic document
distribution.

Competition can be good
Competition can be good
06/03/2004 07:11 AM
I've said many times, competitors can be your best teachers.
They're perfect mirrors, look at a competitor and you can get an idea
of what people see when they look at you. A good competitor knows you
as well as anyone else, and vice versa.
I point to the competition when they're playing reasonably
fair. It's not always good for business, but I assume our readers are
smart, and that they'll make the right decision given all the facts.
And by assuming readers are smart, we attract smart readers.

Want to

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might want to
check out this pics from this year's Robo-One tournament, where crafty
Japanese tinkerers get together each year to let their robots tear
each other to bits. Only our pan-Pacific neighbors would name a
mechanoid death machine "Buster-Lilac," and that's why we love
them.

Top VCs Trying To Discourage The
Competition
01/27/2004 02:53 PMIt seems that some of the bigger name venture capitalists out there
are suddenly saying that
there's too much venture money flowing into the market
again and that means that it's much more difficult for the horses
they've backed to compete. Apparently, they would prefer it if
venture financing remained an exclusive little club where the old boys
could pick two or three players and let them fight it out in the dog
pit, and then pick up their winnings at the IPO window. Of course,
I'm not sure why these guys should care so much. Assuming they know
how to make a good investment, then who cares if the other VC firms
are throwing their money away? They always talk about how much their
guidance and experience helps the companies they invest in - so what
do they care if lesser VCs are backing other companies that compete
with their companies?

03/19/2005 03:27 AMRemix Reading is holding
a remix competition. Here's an excerpt from their site:
After an extremely successful launch event, Remix Reading is pushing
the boundaries of the local cultural community with a remix
competition. Over the next month, we want to see who can create the
best remix of a piece of work already on the website.
There will be four winners, one in each category (audio, image, text,
video). They will each receive the following great prizes:
* Your work on a LOCA Records compilation CD (if LOCA like it
enough)
* A Creative Commons t-shirt
* A DVD full of great Creative Commons videos
* A copy me / remix me compilation CD
* A copy of the Wired CD and that issue of the Wired magazine
* A CD from LOCA Records
* Stickers, badges and fake tattoos
The closing date is Monday 11th April and the winners will be
announced on Friday 15th April. The competition is being judged by a
panel from Remix Reading, Creative Commons and LOCA Records.

OS X Virus Competition Scrapped
OS X Virus Competition Scrapped
03/29/2005 09:00 AMLegal fears have led to the organisers of a competition to create the
first in-the-wild virus to infect Mac OS to halt the event. DVForge,
which builds Apple accessories, was offering a $25,000 prize to the
first person to create such a virus - so far, none have bene detected
in the wild.
The firm put up the cash - which would have gone to the first person
to infect two G5 PowerMac computers running Mac OS X 10.3 connected to
the internet without firewalls or antivirus protection - in response
to a warning from Symantec that the Apple OS would come under
increasing attack from viruses. Jack Campbell, chief executive at
DVForge, said: "I have taken the difficult decision to cancel our
contest. I have been convinced that there may be legal issues stemming
from such a contest, beyond those determined by our own legal counsel
prior to announcing the contest."
Symantec's warning came in its seventh Internet Security Threat
Report, released last week. The firm - which produces a Mac version of
its popular Norton Antivirus software - was faced with accusations
that it had a vested interest in stirring up fear of viruses among the
Mac community following the report's release.

Telecom Competition Shrinking
Telecom Competition Shrinking
12/19/2004 03:18 PMThe Federal Communications Commission claims it's going to
really, really look hard at the Sprint-Nextel merger.
Oh, sure.
This is the same FCC that's rubber-stamping the regional phone
monopolies'
competition-stifling moves in local phone service, the
same FCC that's letting cable and phone broadband providers keep out
alternative ISPs.
There's all kinds of interesting action at the edges these days, in
the wireless-data space for the most part. But the incumbent powers
are doing everything that such companies do when they see a threat.
They're merging up a storm and working to keep competition out of
traditional markets.
And the government that's supposed to encourage competition is doing
everything but officially bless the competition-shrinking trends. Not
good.
