12/02/2003 12:17 AM Today's
Washington Post reports on a recent study conducted by University of
Colorado Health Sciences Center scientists that examined three major
publications over the last year and found that 13% of Internet
references were inactive in articles 27 months old. The report , entitled Going,
Going, Gone: Lost Internet Reference, was published in the Oct. 2003
issue of the journal
Science . The ramifications of the ephemeral nature of web
pages may be felt on an even broader scale:
"It's a huge problem," said Brewster Kahle,
digital librarian at the Internet Archive in San Francisco. "The
average lifespan of a Web page today is 100 days. This is no way to
run a culture."
The article cites several attempts to combat the
problem, including the Internet
Archive project and the digital
object identifier system.

06/28/2004 09:27 PMsentdev sez: "Betterhumans has issued a report about resveratrol, the
compound found in red wine that is responsibile for the so-called
French Paradox-the fact that the fatty food-consuming French have low
levels of heart disease. Consequently, resveratrol has been touted as
the first true antiaging drug. Early clinical reports show that it may
have a role in decreasing insulin levels and blood pressure,
increasing good cholesterol, and extending lifespans to a degree
normally achieved through calorie restricted diets. But as the report
points out, the jury's still out on its long term effects."
