Toyota's Digital Hub for Cars 09/22/2004 04:23 PM

toyota_hub.jpg imageToyota is showing off their new "Toyota Hub" at the Mondial de l'Automobile this weekend, a centrally-linked integrated system that orients around a removable PDA, connecting together the PDA, cell phones, MP3 players, and cameras into an all-in-one system that intelligently uses the car itself for things like sound and tactile interface. The best part? This isn't just a concept system - Toyota plans on offering it as an option as soon as next month.

If anyone happens to pick up a car with the system we'd love to hear what you think of it.

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

Simson Garfinkel has written a new Technology Review article on the subject of Robot Sex - not sex as in robot procreation but as in robot gender. Is your robot a male or female? It turns out Honda thinks Asimo is a male and consistently refers to it as "he". The Roomba, on the other hand, is female according to the author. The article also mentions the Neiman Marcus his & her robots which included a male and female robot. There's a related Slashdot discussion.

Wow Robot KHR-1 07/07/2004 08:04 AM

All 17 different joints are powered by a single motor, and there is even software to pre-script the movements on your computer and play them back again and again. Probably a little out of most casual robotics fans' price range, but for those that really like contributing to our species' ultimate destruction, you know, on the side, the Wow Robot is a lot of cybernetic doom for not a lot of cash. Robot Origami

Robot Origami 05/25/2004 11:37 AM
ORIGAMI_4New Scientist reports on the graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University we've linked to previously who built a robot that can make simple origami constructions. The work is aimed at developing robotic systems that can manipulate various materials encountered in daily life. From researcher Devin Balkcom's site:
"Why origami?  Origami is a fresh challenge for the field of robotic manipulation.  Paper is flexible; robots are best at manipulating rigid things.  Even if we model origami as an articulated rigid body (by building our origami out of really stiff cardboard with hinges along creases), it still has a complicated mechanical structure."  Link

hello_kitty_robot.jpg imageI know that Sanrio's Hello Kitty is sort of hackneyed, but it's hard not to appreciate the sheer force of an entity that has for thirty years been the centerpiece of a full-on marketing onslaught -- especially one so free from use or meaning. Hello Kitty is marketing Zen, or maybe the lightless black hole of product development. If you gaze into Hello Kitty, Hello Kitty gazes also into you.

So to celebrate three decades of soul-sucking kawaii frenzy, Sanrio has developed, among other products, a $3,700 Hello Kitty Robot. I know! Come inside to find out the details, and we'll giggle and clap and jump together.

I, Robot Boycott

I, Robot Boycott 07/16/2004 01:34 AM
By the 1940s Isaac Asimov grew tired of reading endless pulp stories about masses of evil, marauding robots attempting to destroy their creators. His answer was a series of stories in which Susan Calvin, a robopsychologist, solves mysteries caused by conflicts in the Laws of Robotics, a set of ethical rules governing robot behaviour. Asimov's first collection of robot stories was titled I, Robot. Hollywood is trying to pull a fast one by licensing the title of Asimov's book for a completely unrelated movie, originally called Hardwired, about masses of evil, marauding robots attempting to destroy their creators. A hasty rewrite of the script added a few references to the Laws of Robotics and renamed some characters to match Asimov's story. There's a Susan Calvin in the film but she's just along to watch Will Smith shoot things. A petition failed to persuade 20th Century Fox to change the name of the film and now growing numbers of outraged Science Fiction fans request that people boycott the opening week of I, Robot. I plan on joining them, in an effort to put a dent the highly valued opening week revenue. If the marketing tactic makes money this time, Fox will likely use the recently licensed titles to Asimov's Foundation novels to market more unrelated films.

Robot Dog, One of, Field Use

Robot Dog, One of, Field Use 01/07/2004 01:56 PM
The US Army TACOM group is spending $2.25 million on research projects aimed at building robot dogs that can carry a soldier's field equipment and keep up with the soldier over any terrain. Right now, each man has to carry up to 100 pounds of ammunition, food, and equipment. The long term challenge is making a four legged robot that can move as fast and quietly as a man over any terrain. The immediate challenge is making a four legged robot big enough for the job that doesn't fall over and doesn't need an internal combustion engine for power. For more, see Noah Shachtman's interesting article on the program in Wired.

Experimenting AI Lab Robot

Experimenting AI Lab Robot 01/16/2004 11:01 AM
Reuters says that British researchers have created a Robot Scientist that Conducts and Interprets Lab Tests The article says that the robot can formulate theories and do research and works as well as a grad student. (er, um, Did the robot verify that claim with a control subject / grad student?) They did say that there were no differences found between the lab results from the robot and from those gathered by grad students. But at least they do say the tasks they have given it were simple ones and that it's unlikely to put anyone out of a job. So basically, this robot harbinger of the future can take the grunt work out of doing lab experiments, allowing robots to yet again free the world from drudgery (that professors usually dump on grad students). One researcher says, " If you opened it up I think humans would have the advantage. We tend to be more flexible " If it really can figure out things for itself, the scientists may have invented themselves out of a job!

Robot librarian

Robot librarian 07/21/2004 11:20 AM
Researchers at Universitat Jaume I in Spain are designing a robot librarian of sorts. The three-wheeled bot listens for verbal book requests, heads to the approximate location of the title on a shelf, and uses digital cameras to read the spines. The toughest challenge is engineering a grasper with "fingernails" to pull out the book, Professor Angel del Pobil told the BBC:
"It is mimicking the way we manipulate our hands. We have constant feedback from tactile sensors, so it is moving very slowly. In the first experiments, the books really got damaged because it was pressing too hard. Now it touches gently."

If you aren't ready to bash the Near Me into bits of robot kibble by the end, clearly something is wrong with your fight or flight reflexes. That thing is waiting to strike; you can see it in its eyes. (Thanks, Peter!)
