Free open WiFi on Tacoma-Washington
train, courtesy WiFi hacker
03/24/2005 08:15 PMCory Doctorow:
A Seattle wireless hacker rides a commuter train from Tacoma every day
with a battery-powered WiFi hotspot in his backpack that's linked up
to the Internet with a
14.4 144k wireless modem. Catch his
train and get free WiFi on your commute.
The open wireless node can be found in the first car of the last
morning train and in Car 403 on the 5:10pm return trip. Use SSID
"FreeInternetAccess" or "seattlewireless" to connect - You may have to
assign yourself an IP in the range 192.168.0.0/24 and use the Default
Gateway 192.168.0.1 as the DHCP is sometimes flakey

David Pescovitz:
In the December issue of my favorite print magazine Smithsonian, my
old friend/Wired editor Michael Behar has a great article about Robert
Graf, a treasure hunter seeking a centuries-old pirate's booty. The
multimillion-dollar treasure might be hidden in a stone vault now
underwater in the Seychelles. Then again, it might not be.
When I arrive on Mahé, it's easy to spot Graf in the
crowd at the airport. He's the only guy wearing a T-shirt emblazoned
with the classic pirate ensign—a skull and crossbones. Tanned
and fit, the treasure hunter seems relaxed—hardly what you'd
expect from someone who has spent a third of his life obsessed with a
long-dead pirate. Yet Graf is no laid-back islander. He's in-your-face
intense right from the start. I'd barely heaved my suitcase into the
trunk of his rusty compact car when he launched into a breathless
retelling of how he'd voyaged some 10,000 miles from his Colorado
home, married a Seychellois hotel reservations manager and spent more
than $450,000 of his own money looking for a treasure that others have
failed to find here for nearly a century.

Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy
Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy
07/16/2004 04:50 PMA few weeks ago I got Chrisalis Developemnt's
WiFi Seeker, a convenient
keychain-sized wireless network locator. Marware's recently announced
WiFi Spy is a
rebranded version of the same device, so it should perform
identically.
To locate a wireless network simply press the button and watch the
LEDs. When the lights stop sweeping back and forth, the number that
remain lit will show the strength of the wireless signal. If the
lights continue to sweep back and forth, you're not in range for any
wireless network. Unlike other devices, the WiFi Seeker isn't fooled
by other 2.5 GHz signals like microwave ovens or cordless phones, and
it doesn't depend on 802.11 client activity to detect the access
point. It detects both 802.11b and 802.11g.

deb
ut: If you've got something with a Sun logo on it
that's not working right, you call me; once again, a window
into a world I don’t know. Moving on, David Ogren gives us tasty
little
bite of blog-propaganda. Jon Haslam
shows us how to use the incredibly-advanced
features of Solaris to torture
tcsh users, but then
spoils it by admitting to being a miserably-deluded
ksh
devotee (Everybody Knows
bash is the One True Shell). On
the lighter side, Steve Lau
calculates the
cost of commuting, and Henry Jia
survives some tests including “pass through electric grid”
and “get treasure from boiled liquid”—with these guys on our
side, how can we lose? To end on a serious note, Simon Phipps
points to a
remarkably beautiful video (watch it more than once) and Alec
Muffet
reflects on, well, life and how to live it.

Microsoft Hunts Child Pornography
04/08/2005 06:01 PMMicrosoft launched a software program designed to help police
worldwide hunt down child porn traffickers by enabling authorities for
the first time to link information such as credit card purchases,
internet chat room messages and arrest records. The Child Exploitation
Tracking System is the first software designed specifically to capture
pornographers who prey on children over the internet.
It will allow police departments worldwide to share and track
previously unlinked information on investigations and suspects. The
open source program was developed by Microsoft Canada, the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police and Toronto police, with the help of the
Department of Homeland Security, Scotland Yard and Interpol. The FBI
has seen a 2,000 percent increase in the number of child pornography
images on the internet since 1996 and Canadian police estimate that
more than 100,000 websites contain images of child sexual abuse.
