Is Time Travel Is Possible?
Is Time Travel Is Possible?
03/15/2003 04:00 PMThere was that
guy who
was supposedly going to have 3rd August 2002 tatooed on his forearm
instructing him to come back in time to the Empire State Building on
that date should he ever gain access to time travel in his lifetime.
Whatever.
What about putting a line in your will and
testament to the effect that you will legally force your children to
pledge that they will come back in time to meet you should they gain
access to time travel in their lifetimes, and they in turn must too
must force their children to make the same pledge and so on all the
way down your entire line of descendants. Surely by making that pledge
today you
should be able to make time travel happen. If it is
at all possible.
Wow, wait a minute......someone who looks
a little like me dressed in an outfit made out of what looks like
silver foil type fabric just appeared in my room. Wait...what?....you
mean you're my
great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grea
t grandson and you've come back to show me all about time travel? Wow!
I just had a quick trip forwards in time to August this year and I
blogged it!
Cool.

Diller To Show IAC Is No Travel Company
By Creating IAC's Travel Company
12/22/2004 01:16 AMBarry Diller has done a good job buying up various online "middleman"
companies in a variety of spaces from travel to social networking to
dating. However, he says too many people view InterActiveCorp as a
travel company and that's making it more difficult to acquire
non-travel companies. So, in order to
prove that he's not
running a travel company...
he's
going to show them what it means to really run a travel
company. That is, he's going to spin off all of IAC's travel
properties, including Expedia, Hotwire, TravelNow and Hotels.com, into
one company (which he'll still run), and keep all the other properties
as IAC. While it may be a good idea to realize the value of those
other properties, from the beginning Diller kept talking about the
synergies of having all of these properties under the same umbrella.
Apparently, those synergies only go so far when the stock price isn't
as high as he had hoped.

07/20/2004 12:54 PMSmall Town Software announced on Tuesday the release of
Time and
Budgets, a new application that integrates with Apple's iCal
application to supply time and budgeting functions for projects. The
software also works with any calendar program that supports WebDAV
(Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning), which means .Mac
subscribers can use iCal with the online service to seamlessly input
data and generate reports that convert time into dollars and cents
that can be compared against a project's budget. Available reports in
Time and Budgets include time sheets with visual charts, details about
time logged in specific phases and tasks, aggregate workgroup feedback
and more. Another option can generate e-mail alerts when projects have
reached certain financial goals.

The Wilderness Society: Earth Dayhttp://earthday.wilderness.org/
On April 22, 2005, people around the world will
celebrate the 35th anniversary of Earth Day. This Topic in Depth
focuses on the past and present of this significant day. From the
Wisconsin Historical Society, the first two sites contain historical
documents pertaining to Earth Day. The first (1) document features a
May 1970 issue of The Gaylord Nelson Newsletter reporting on the first
Earth Day. The second (2) document is a speech by Nelson entitled "An
Environmental Agenda for the 70's." Housed in the archives of the US
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website, the next two sites also
contain historical documents. The first (3) site contains an article
written by Nelson for the EPA Journal in April of 1980, entitled
"Earth Day '70: What It Meant." The second (4) site contains an
article written by John C. Whitaker (former Interior undersecretary in
the Nixon administration) for the EPA Journal in the summer of 1998.
The article is entitled "Earth Day Recollections: What It Was Like
When the Movement Took Off." The (5) Earth Day Network (first
mentioned in the April 4, 2003, Scout Report for Life Sciences) works
"to broaden the environmental movement worldwide and to educate and
mobilize people, governments, and corporations to take responsibility
for a clean and healthy environment." In addition to information
sections about Ongoing Programs, Current Campaigns, and News, the
Earth Day Network website contains Earth Day 2005 Materials for
organizers. From EarthDay.gov, Take Action In Your Classroom (6)
offers links to a variety of environmental education resources. The
next website, from the U.S. Army Environmental Center, presents (7)
Army Earth Day; and links to information about the Army's
environmental activities. The final (8) site is an Earth Day-inspired
educational website (first reported on in the April 14, 1999 Scout
Report for Science & Engineering) from the Wilderness Society. The
site offers a collection of environmental education resources for
teachers and students. [From The NSDL Scout Report for the Life

A huge collection of Creative Commons -licensed
alternative world history (and future) that should make the soul of
every hardcore sci-fi fan tickle. I only took a quick glance through
it, but already I started getting ideas...
I think this is another good example on how uncoordinated efforts of
dedicated amateurs can produce things that rival commercial
alternatives. I don't think it replaces them, though, but it
can be a good choice among many. The Internet has really allowed a
whole new kind of collaboration efforts to take place, things that
were rather difficult to do before. Essentially the Internet is now
doing the job of the scientific journals, and it is not surprising
that many of the academic papers are being published on the Internet
first these days...

OK, Who's Overclocking The Earth?
12/31/2003 01:14 PMRemember back in 1999 when people started talking about "internet
time", which was this crazy notion that, thanks to the internet, the
usual course of business went much much much faster? Well, it sounds
like the Earth tried to get in on some of that, as it's now been
revealed that since 1999,
our home planet has been making it's annual trek
around the sun one second faster than it was for quite some time.
Between 1972 and 1999, we had to add a special "leap second" each
year, since the Earth was slowing down, and losing a step. However,
since 1999, for reasons no one is quite sure, the Earth appears to
have caught a second wind and is speeding up a bit.

RIP, Whole Earth Review
01/24/2004 03:36 AMWhole Earth magazine has gone bust (they owe me money!) (and they
changed my life!) (and their editorial board insisted on utterly
stupid edits to the story they owe me money for!) (and they really did
change my life!) (boy, those were stupid edits!). This is bad news.
Whole Earth magazine -- spawn of the amazing Whole Earth Catalogs,
source of the WELL, first to mention in print the Gaia Hypothesis, the
Internet, Virtual Reality, the Singularity and Burning Man (or at
least so the legend goes), the place where folks like Stewart Brand,
Kevin Kelly and Howard Rheingold found their voices, and where a whole
generation of young commune-kid geeks like myself learned to dream
weird -- is no more.
