Introducing Google Australia

Introducing Google Australia

Introducing Google Australia 12/22/2002 03:40 PM

Google Australia [www.google.com.au] joins the other 40 country-specific Googles. News.com: Google opens up in the land down under. 'However, it would seem that the company plans to open up a Sydney-based operation in Australia--it has begun advertising for employees on its Web site. "We hope to make a big announcement early in the new year, but at this stage all I can say is that the site has gone live," Frost said.' [Sorry for the delay; I recently got back from my trip to California (including another quick visit to Google!).]...

Introducing the Canvas

Introducing the Canvas 07/05/2004 02:29 PM

Another extension we made to HTML is a new element called the canvas. This element is essentially an image element that supports programmatic drawing. The way it works is that you can invoke a method called getContext on the canvas and then you have access to a whole range of 2d drawing calls. This element is how the hands of the Dashboard clock are drawn in HTML. The canvas fully participates in CSS styling too, so you can give it borders or background images while still painting the foreground content programmatically.

In addition to the canvas element, we've also introduced a new attribute onto the img element. The composite attribute allows you to control how an image gets composited. The default is source-over, which is how images are normally composited on the Web, but now we've introduced other values for more complex compositing operations. Especially in the Dashboard with its transparent windows, these other compositing operations become useful, since you can use this feature to "punch holes" to the desktop, allowing for all sorts of wild irregular shapes.

Introducing UseModWiki 04/04/2005 10:55 AM
Wiki software implements the simple idea that Web pages should be easy, even trivial, to create, and that anyone reading the page should be able to correct, improve, revise and add to the page. Wikis (the word means "quick" in Hawaiian) have become popular on the World Wide Web. With simple formatting rules to make it easy to build well-organized hyperlinked pages, a wiki becomes an efficient means of creating a Web site. One worthwhile wiki for business collaboration is Clifford Adam's UseModWiki.

Rave-MP AMP 128 Flash Player Reviewed

Rave-MP AMP 128 Flash Player Reviewed 09/08/2004 10:24 AM

rave_amp128.jpg imageI used to hate flash memory players, but I'm coming around, and for one single reason: they're a commodity now. Being cheap - this Rave-MP AMP 128 reviewed by PCWorld is only $100, and will go for even less soon - means that I can keep a flash player around as a backup to a hard-disk player, something to take out into the rain maybe or throw in a bag that's going to get roughed around, and never give it a second thought. Plus 1GB SD cards a sickeningly cheap these days (sickening when you consider how much money you spent on flash memory in the past).

What sells the AMP 128 specifically, though? I dunno, really - the feature set on these things is almost exactly the same these days - but it does have that inverted-color display, which I saw in person a few weeks back, and is actually pretty cool.

Rave-MP ARC and AMP MP3 Players

Rave-MP ARC and AMP MP3 Players 08/02/2004 02:08 PM

< img src="http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/images/govideo_ravemp.jpg" alt="govideo_ravemp.jpg image" width="116" height="200" border="0" align="right" vspace="5" hspace="15"/>Rave-MP is reentering the MP3 player market with at least two new units, the Rave-MP ARC [pictured] and the Rave-MP AMP, the former a hard disk-based player available in 2.5GB and 5GB versions, with the latter a less-interesting but still decent flash-based player. I had a chance to sit down with some of the folks from Rave-MP the other night and play around with both units, and they seem nice enough as far as that goes -- and the price is right, at $229 for the 5GB version -- but I can't really get past the fact that the ARC looks sort of lifeless. It looks a little better in person, but not by much.

Still, I think Go Video has some commitment to getting back into the game, so it will be interesting to see where they go from here. If they could release an ARC 2 with the same specs and a more stylish form factor, I think they'd take a nice bite of the market (especially if retails drop the price a little. $230 is a little too close to the iPod mini's $250.)

A East London dance club held an all-deaf rave, featuring signing-karaoke, deaf rap, a standup comdian, and all the pumping basslines they could handle. Problem was, the lights were flashing so much, no one could chat with each other at the bar. Perhaps they should hook up with this guy to get a more moving experience.

Silent rave with wireless headphones

Silent rave with wireless headphones 03/30/2005 04:33 AM
Cory Doctorow: UK's Glastonbury music festival will get around a late-night ban on loud bass by handing wireless headphones out to the attendees, producing a silent rave:
"I like the idea of people dancing in total silence," said Emily Eavis, one of the festival organisers and daughter of the founder Michael Eavis. "Imagine if you were feeling a bit worse for wear and thought, 'This would be a nice quiet place to sit down'.

"You would be completely freaked out to see 3000 people dancing in silence. It's certainly quirky, but our big push this year is keeping the noise down because that's what the council is keen on."

MP364ND_mpio.jpg image

Cheese and crackers, what is it with the MP3 player launches today? Pocket-Lint points out two more products, from two different companies: the first is a 64MB (ack!) from Alba clunkily called the MP364NDI [pictured left] that is aimed at the 'beginner market' (you know, those music rookies who can only listen to eight songs at a time) and is priced at a barely-compensatory $55; the other is the much more attractive (the cute girl/ugly friend syndrome, perhaps) mpio hd200, another 5GB hard disk-based player (that's like the fourth time I've written that today) that is nice enough looking as these things go, has integrated FM with recording and the important-to-few-but-don't-tell-them OGG Vorbis support. Digitalway's mpio hd200 is priced at £199 in the UK (which is around $360 here), but if the expect to sell any in the US I'd hazard a guess that it will retail for just under $250.

I'm thinking Seagate and company finally dropped a boatload of hard disks on all these vendors.

mpio_fl300.jpg imageMPIO is releasing a pendant-style MP3 player, the FL300, a flash memory player that seemingly takes its visual cues from the iRiver N10. Although some might argue it's not as good looking as the N10, either, I have to admit a certain affinity for their ad copy on the website, which documents the "FL300 Story" in a sort of cartoony sketch style. It also looks like the headphones attach by the minijack at the top. That doesn't seem like a very good idea.
