Cory Doctorow:
The COO of 3, a European 3G wireless company, has uttered one of the
stupidest things ever said by a phone company executive
(
there's a field with some stiff competition!). In justifying
his company's decision to censor the Internet services delivered over
its wireless link (they're only allowing customers to access certain,
selected services, rather than providing a fast wireless pipe that
customers can use as they see fit), this loonytune has this to say:
'People don't want open access, that's not what our
customers tell us they want,' he said. 'Anyone in their right mind who
tries to do anything on the Internet with a screen that size has to be
nuts.'

Last fall I asked a question that I'll probably keep on asking in
various contexts:
Can
rich Internet apps be web-friendly?. In
response,
Macromedia chief software architect Kevin Lynch created an
example
showing how the state of a Flash app could be exposed on the
browser's URL-line, and thus made available for bookmarking, deep
linking, and scripted integration. There was also some
follow-up
discussion on integrating this technique with the browser's
navigation history.

web-browser plug-ins? They're back:
http://www.techworld.com/applications/news/index.cfm?newsid=1856
Web browser makers Apple, Opera and Mozilla are
collaborating on an expanded plug-in specification that allows for
more powerful Web-based scripting - just as security concerns have
finally convinced Microsoft to step back from its own scripting
system, ActiveX. The companies have signed up plug-in makers Adobe,
Macromedia and Sun to back an expanded version of the Netscape Plugin
Application Program Interface (NPAPI), a plug-in model used by most
non-Microsoft browsers. The updated API will create a standardised way
of increasing interactivity between browsers and plug-ins, which will
be built into Apple's Safari, Mozilla's Firefox and the Opera
browser.

Series 60 users who are looking for a replacement web

creator Access Systems is giving away a free activation key if you
leave them a comment with your thoughts on their browser and how they
can improve it. NetFront has some rough edges, but it does a lot
right, too, so it's worth at least checking out. Gadgetophile has a
nice review that sort of explains why it is both awesome and yet wonky
at the same time.

Patch Management
06/05/2004 04:33 AMRecently, in the Wired Windows column in Network World (link below)
I talked about patch management, and especially third party patch
management - Microsoft's products in this area leave a lot to be
desired. Among others, I mentioned Patchlink, which has been around
since the mid 1990s when it was known as Gravitix. However, the
company itself is now almost 15 years old. Old timers may remember it
better under the name HiTechSoft, the people who created NetBasic, the
scripting language used in NetWare 4 and 5.

$50M+ valuation for what?
$50M+ valuation for what?
06/26/2004 12:56 PMA little recap context first.....
Though Ryze can certainly be credited
with being the first modern day social network (after the first
generation SixDegrees system) - Friendster is the Kleenex (or
Tampax) of social networks, the standard of which everyone is
compared to.
Friendster attracted the most attention, both for it's bizarre
treatment of it's early users and it's huge valuation and blue-chip VC
investment.
Jonathan Abrams of Friendster was a real asshole, running around
gloating and acting like he owned the world. He insisted he didn't
want those early adopters and that his site was all about dating.
Once he got his investment, I predicted he'd be out within 6 months
- as there's one thing I know about - it's the Kleiner, Perkins
MO.
So now they've brought in Scott "TV" Sassa and surprise surprise
Scott is finding that Friendster is a ghost town - with the only
actvity going on in Malaysia (and other non-U.S. markets.)
But Scott was hired to do a reality TV show and he's finding that
the brand is severely tainted. So what do they do? Reach out to the
early adopters, starting with folks like danah boyd - to ask them to
help them with their email campaign.
So here is:
1) danah's post on this hilarious sequence of events
2) the email campaign choices that they offered danah and the other
"SuperFriends".
BTW danah told me that Friendster now outputs CVS versions of one's
profile. So they're one phone call away from supporting our FOAFnet.
YOU SEE! Truth and right wins the day!
ONE FINAL NOTE:
danah is more or less turning into the vanguard - the advance
forces - on each of these cutting edge social software efforts. She
was the first to study and comment on the rude behavior to the
Fakesters, she worked on the Tribe.net (I was there - too:-) and she's
recently been helping Google out as well.
So the message to any of you nascent social networking
entrepreneurs - hire danah - and LISTEN TO HER!
OH yah - and I guess Mark Pincus and Reid Hoffman should have sold
their Angel shares when they got a chance! 'Cause this company is
tubing. Sassa will be gone within 12 months.
Friendster is desperate;
viral marketing failed
Friendster realizes that it has lost the attention of its earliest
adopters. This morning, Friendster sent a message to a select number
of people that they labeled as "SuperFriends." It's a usability survey
where they are asking for users' advice on an email campaign. There
are four different potential emails that they sent out as screen
shots. Here's a sample one:
Subject: Friendster Now
So you're working. Who cares? You have a lifetime to work. What you'll
really regret coughing and wheezing on your deathbed is not looking up
all the old high-school friends, college buddies, summer camp alums,
Burning Man acquaintances and ex'es who are just hoping you reach out
and find them. And discovering new hiking partners, book groups and
jam band fans. And setting up that person you really would date
yourself if you were single. There's oh so much to do.
Seriously, you should go to Burning Man. It's pretty cool. The jam
band stuff we understand if you're not into. We just needed an example
there.
Thanks.
www.friendster.com
Oh, to make sure you keep getting these vaguely sarcastic emails,
please add Friendster to your email address book now. If for no other
reason than it will look cool to have Friendster in your address
book.
The tone of these messages is desperate, begging for attention of the
original early adopters - the ones that Abrams told me were ruining
his system. One focuses on Burning Man types; one mocks the old Power
Point COO; one charges non-users with harming children; one is a
desperate love poem. They're hyper American-centric, SF-centric, white
collar, wannabee hipster, intentionally attempting sarcasm (and
clarifying that below) and complete with 80s references.
I guess Friendster isn't happy with the majority of its users being
young and from Asia. Does this mean that Friendster has its tail
between its legs about its early egotistical behavior? Apparently,
viral marketing isn't working well enough anymore.
Anyhow, you *have* to read the full message that these SuperFriends
got (included in the full message). It has had me ROFL for hours.
Below is the message that Friendster SuperFriend's received. The
text was followed by four email screen shots; I have transcribed those
for ease of access.

Hi,
As a SuperFriend, we would appreciate your feedback on a new
email
campaign. Friendster will soon be sending emails to two groups of
Friendster members - active members who use the site and inactive
members who have not recently used the site. We created two email
versions for each group and want your opinion to help us decide
which
versions to use.
Please refer to the two versions for each group and reply to this
email
(at usability@friendster.com) to answer the related questions. As
always, we greatly appreciate you taking the time to tell us what
you
think on behalf of the Friendster community!

Subject: Don't Tell Anyone
You're our favorite subscriber. Seriously. I know we here at
Friendster shouldn't play favorites, and our chief operating officer
(he's the old guy in the office) told us not to do this, but
seriously, you just totally rock. The way you reconnect with old
friends. The way you've figured out just how small and interconnected
the world really is. The way you discovered people with the same
interests as you. We suspect you've even gotten a date out of
Friendster, or that if you didn't, you could have if you needed to.
Easy. With one of those three suspiciously hot people who keep popping
up right above your friends list. For other people, we just use those
pictures as cruel, aspirational temptation. But for you, they're
totally getable.
Hey, don't tell anyone we told you all of this. That old guy in the
office will just start lecturing us again and pulling out charts and
graphs and PowerPoint displays. He's such a loser.
Thanks.

Subject: The Suffering You've Caused
We totally miss you. By "we" we don't so much mean we here at
Friendster. No, we like you and all, but really, to be honest, we're
not all that close. No the "we" here are your real friends, the one
you reconnected with through Friendster but have been ignoring as of
late. They're the ones who are suffering. They're the ones who are
crying late at night, screaming your name as they wait for you to
contact them. Not to mention all the old high-school friends, college
buddies and ex-es who are just hoping you reach out and find them. And
the hiking partners, book groups and Wilco-heads who need you to
discover them. It's them, the children, who are suffering. That's
right, the children.
So come on back. We've made it easier for you, getting much faster
and easier to navigate as we've grown. We won't judge. We're just here
to help you. Help you help the children.
Thanks.

Subject: We Still Care
We miss you. There, we said it. It feels better. So we're going to
do everything we can to bring you back to Friendster, all the way up
to that John Cusack boom box Say Anything bit. So before it all comes
to that, just come back to Friendster. We've already made it easier
for you, getting much faster and clearer as we've grown. Now, in just
minutes you can find people you've been wondering about: friends from
summer camp, college roommates, high school buddies, cousins, people
you used to date, people you wanted to date, these people you know,
and don't know, are connected to each other and what a beautifully
small world it really is. Or date, or help a friend find a date. We
don't care. We just want you back in our lives. And we can tell you
that you want the same thing. We can see it... in your eyes. The
light, the heat. Your eyes, we feel complete. See, we told you.
Thanks.

Delayed patch ends Microsoft's
patch-free month early
12/11/2003 12:02 PMA glitch in Microsoft's Windows Update automated patching service
caused a security fix that was released last month to be delivered to
computer users on Tuesday, the same day Microsoft proclaimed December
would be a patch-free month. The software patch fixes a serious
vulnerability in a set of Web site management tools called FrontPage
Server Extensions, which are part of Microsoft's Windows 2000, Windows
XP and Office XP software, according to Microsoft Security Bulletin
MS03-051 released Nov. 11. Exploiting the flaw could allow an attacker
to gain control over a user's PC, Microsoft said.
