Mitsubishi's Robotic Carp

Mitsubishi's Robotic Carp 11/10/2003 10:56 PM
The Washington Times says that a robotic carp was invented for some reason. It seems that Japanese researchers at Mitsubishi have spent over $1 million to create a life-size robotic carp. The robotic fish is about 3 feet long and moves about 12 inches per hour. Except for the eyes, this fish looks like the real thing. One possible use might be to catch Koi Carp Poachers which are rumored to bring in $80k each. Mitisubish also plans to create a fish tank (virtual aquarium) filled with robotic replica long extinct marine creatures "just for fun".

CARP your way to high availability 04/16/2004 07:33 AM
You're putting out system management fires, with five SSH sessions open on your desktop. The mail server needs a restart after that kernel patch, so you su to root and type reboot. Just as the connection closes, your brain catches up with your fingertips. The mail server's still up -- the system you rebooted was the firewall at the site 200 miles away. The firewall on which 50 users rely. The firewall that refuses to reboot without a cold reset. What do you do?

The application vendors should do a better job of standardizing default storage locations and names (even as aliases) while still letting users override those choices and pick their own storage metaphor. This isn't nuclear physics - everyone has experience organizing their "stuff" (socks, bills, books, DVDs) so why not a) let them do it and b) use familiar metaphors for it?

Australia Looking To Outlaw Spyware

Australia Looking To Outlaw Spyware 12/26/2003 01:45 PM
Over in Australia, they've realized that as they try to slow down the spam tide, the worst spam scammers have moved from spam on to spyware. Thus, they're now talking about outlawing spyware - at which point the scammers will move on to something else. While I do think something needs to be done about spyware, I wonder how they're going to define spyware. Whenever politicians start outlawing technologies, there's a big risk that they'll do such a bad job of defining the software, that plenty of legitimate applications get banned as well. In the case of spyware, I guess the focus should be on applications that are installed without the computer owner's clear consent (which means not sneaking approval into an end user license agreement either).
