IDG World Expo on Tuesday offered a preview of some of the highlights of next week's Macworld Conference & Expo, taking place from January 10 - 14, 2005 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, Calif. The event will feature a keynote presentation by Apple Computer Inc. CEO Steve Jobs and features more than 275 exhibiting companies, six music concerts and an expanded conference selection.

Eovia Corp. on Tuesday introduced Carrara 4, a new version of its 3D modeling, animation and rendering software for Mac and Windows. The new Carrara 4 replaces Carrara Studio 3 and will be available in both Pro and Standard versions. Coming in October, it will be priced at US$599 for the Pro version, $299 for Standard. Upgrades from previous versions are also available.

A fair number of new Apple products were announced at the Macworld Expo last night. As has been widely rumoured throughout the holiday season, Apple launched a slimmed down version of the iPod, called the iPod mini. The rumours were spot on about the range of colours (mmm, lime green), smaller capacity (4 Gb), smaller casing (a mere 3.6" x 2" — about fag packet size), though they were wrong about the use of Smart Media (the iPod mini uses a hard disk), and way off abut the price. This is the big surprise to me. The announced price is $249 — a fair bit more than the rumoured price of $100. Other announcements —

Prosoft Engineering announced on Tuesday the release of Pict ure Rescue, a new utility that recovers pictures eliminated from digital camera media through single delete and delete-all functions or because the media was reformatted or corrupt. However, the application can't find lost pictures on XD cards that have been reformatted in Olympus and Fuji digital cameras. Picture Rescue can recover images of all file types -- including JPEG, TIFF, Raw and other formats -- and also sports the ability to find lost AVI, MPEG and MOV video clips. It's available now for US$59.

IDG World Expo says the upcoming Macworld Conference & Expo will be a show people remember for years to come. Held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, Calif.
