Gadget Overload
Gadget Overload
04/26/2004 04:07 PMWe've all heard stories about convergence when it comes to gadgets,
but for many people, all we've experienced is the
nee
d for a larger and larger gadget bag (and a corresponding increase
in chiropractor bills). Of course, even worse than the gadgets
themselves, may be each of the different chargers needed to make sure
the devices actually run. The question, though, is whether or not
this is a temporary state where the possible future we all like to
talk about just isn't here yet - or if we're really moving towards a
world where more devices is the norm, rather than the other way
around. Right now, though, the situation leads to somewhat comic
(assuming you're not the person involved) situations like the
following: "After downloading some massive high-res files from the
digital camera to my laptop, I needed to send them to my coworker's
laptop. Of course, I didn't have a wireless local-area network (WLAN)
card for that old IBM. Neither laptop had a disk drive. The PC didn't
recognize a USB stick. There was no high-speed access at my funky
hotel in downtown San Francisco, nor could I log the laptop into the
LAN in the convention center's pressroom. And, the pressroom's dial-up
connection took so long, the laptop's batteries died, the adapter
being back at the hotel room."

topics from Xeni Jardin's BoingBoing contributions to achieve some
eclectic frisson -- those posts just happen to be her last three. They
may be indicative, though, of Jardin's many tentacled exploration into
dozens of subjects, not just as one of the four cornerstones of
BoingBoing, but as a contributing writer for WIRED Magazine and on-air

In his email signature, Glenn Fleishman calls himself
an unsolicited pundit -- and he's not lying. He'll send you a five
page screed on the latest Wi-Fi news, dropping unexpected science out
of the ether, and every single time you'll come away smarter than you
started. Fortunately, he doesn't limit his insight to email, instead
writing for a variety of outlets including the Seattle Times and his
own technology weblog, Wi-Fi
Networking News. When we solicited him about his gadget bag, Glenn
graciously provided in spades, even in the eve of the birth of his
son. Thanks Glenn, and congratulations to you and your wife! After the
first cut, may your son's life always be wireless.
Wireless. Sure. What a dream. I make most of my living writing
about wireless technology, primarily Wi-Fi. So why is my traveling bag
full of wires? Is it because Bluetooth turned out to be weaker and
more confusing than planned? Is it because I have too much equipment
that doesn't use standards? These are the questions I ask when I look
at my regular traveling kit, and I have no good answers, just more
wires.

hip-e: Gadget System for Teens
hip-e: Gadget System for Teens
08/19/2004 09:44 AM
A company called "Digital
Lifestyles" has a new product line out called "hip-e," which after you
get done cringing over the name look fairly decent, but probably way
overpriced to properly market to the teen segment. The whole concept
revolves around the "node," a Pentium M-based iMac-esque desktop PC,
with a 17-inch built-in widescreen LCD (1400 by 900 pixels). The node
is an odd mixture of cut corners and nice options, such as 512MB of
RAM standard - that's nice - but only "high performance video," which
means it will probably not play videogames worth a damn (and that's
before you factor in the 1.5GHz processor). So it's hard to decide
what parent or self-sufficient kid is going to want to drop $1,700 on
a neat but underpowered machine when they could probably get a couple
of eMachines or something for the same price.
Clearly, though, Digital Lifestyles is hoping the cross-promotion
of the Hip-e will push more units, and they're doing it in both
interesting and annoying ways. The detachable "beatbox" that comes
with the node PC also functions as external speakers for the "playme"
512MB flash drive ($150); that's a pretty cool trick. But the "Squads"
idea, which looks to be some sort of viral advertising masked as
teenage social networking looks really pathetic (although it's not out
yet, so take that for what it's worth).
Marketing to teens is a fine idea, but the Hip-e may be trying a
little too hard. Kids can sniff out focus groups' pawprints from a
mile away. (Thanks, Mike!)

What's In Your Gadget Bag, Warren Ellis?
What's In Your Gadget Bag, Warren Ellis?
08/31/2004 07:44 AM
Warren Ellis single-handedly reignited my love of
funny books with his seminal not-near-enough-future comic
Transmetropolitan. Does he need any more introduction than
that? Currently working on a novel (without pretty pictures!) and the
conversion of the Global Frequency books into a TV series,
Warren dashed out his choices for what he includes in his Gadget Bag
in typical style:
You just caught me. I'm off to Atlanta in 36 hours or so; jumping
from British Summer Time to Eastern Daylight Time for something called
Dragon*Con, where I'm a special guest (and also cultivating the Freak
Vote in prep for my first prose novel, published next summer).
I travel light. I'm the guy whose bag hits the luggage carousel
last. I'm the guy who's still there at three in the morning in an
empty hall, with tumbleweed blowing past, sitting there next to horse
skeletons and starving vultures, waiting for the airport workers to
finish their smack break and grub around in the back of the airplane
for my bag. Which usually comes out looking like they've been having
group sex on it. So, five or six years ago, I decided that if it
didn't fit into a carry-on bag, I wasn't taking it.
Glenn Fleishman's gadget bag
Glenn Fleishman's gadget bag
07/23/2004 02:39 AMThe latest victim in Gizmodo's "What's in Your Gadget Bag?" feature is
Glenn Fleishman, who comes clean about a truly astonishing amount of
crap that he lugs around with him in his electronics kit, described
with the loving verbosity of a real geek.
The camera used to take this picture is a Canon S1 IS, a 3-megapixel
device that has a 10x optical zoom, interchangeable lenses, and uses
four AA batteries. Using 2200 milliamphere hour (mAh) batteries
recently, I took 500 photos and movies over the course of a month
before swapping out another set and recharging. The camera does 640 by
480, 30 frame per second mono-audio video up to the size of the memory
card on top of its anti-jitter-motor photos.
Finally, I always carry a 12-foot extension cord with multiple plugs
on the end, and the alternative two-prong adapter for my Apple power
supply. You never know how many friends you have until you have extra
outlets.

Longhorn to Help Control Gadget Use
Longhorn to Help Control Gadget Use
09/09/2004 02:54 PMIf the details in a CNet
article are correct, Microsoft's Longhorn will
include tools needed(?) by IT managers to put the clamps on people
using various gadgets to their work PC's.
Flash drives, iPods, and other doodads — both wired and
wireless — that are able to store large amounts of data can be a
security risk to the company; unscrupulous employees can use them to
load up lots of sensitive documents and carry them out in a pocket.
There's also the danger of such devices either accidentally or
intentionally introducing viruses and other malicious software into a
network.
Companies have been slow to react to the threat posed by digital
storage devices in general. It's one that companies have turned a
blind eye to for a very long time. If you think back, it used to be
that stealing significant secrets was difficult because it was hard to
get away with that much paper.
(for some reason I had a flash of Sandy Berger shoving paper in
his pants just now!)
Many government agencies and the US military have already banned
the on-duty use of some such devices, and many private businesses are
following suit. But banning an item and being able to prevent its use
are two different things.
Too bad the IT world has to wait for Longhorn to do this; a lot of
pilfering can happen between now and then. But I'm sure there are 3rd
party developers that are working on something like this as we speak,
if they're not out already.

Gadget Magazine Bubble
Gadget Magazine Bubble
06/07/2004 09:06 AMOm Malik picked up an issue of Primedia's Connected magazine
and was so disgusted by its lack of good gadget news and insight that
he did what no other angry internet writer would dare to do -- he
wrote a blog entry. Fortunately, Om knows what he's talking about,
especially when he compliments me and my online colleagues by claiming
that a simple aggregation of a few blogs collectively kicks the ass of
almost any dead tree magazine around. What's more useful to you:
publications with 90 day lead times or blogs that measure scoop time
by the minute? Thank god there are a few magazines out there doing it
right. I was pleasantly surprised by Mobile PC Magazine's recent
laptop comparison issue that used the paper format to show life-sized
pictures of each notebook's keyboard -- exactly the sort of thing that
leverages (synergizes!) the strengths of the paper medium. But for up
to the minute news, what's the point? The internet wounded magazines
years ago, and blogs have refined the technique to a deadly art.
