Democratic Party party

Democratic Party party 04/27/2004 11:36 AM
Quite an action-packed day yesterday. I did two keynotes, at two separate events. After the second one, I went back to the first event, a gathering of about 125 people who run libraries and museums, because I'm trying to write some stuff about metadata and taxonomies. I learned, for example, that one well-known art museum has had to create over 300 new Dewey Decimal categories for illustrated manuscripts ... and one for astrology. Afterwards, I went to a cocktail party put on by the hosts of the second event. It was quite the power party. I got to chat for...

I'm trying out the Party Shuffle feature in the new iTunes, and I'd have to say it's a major improvement over the regular shuffle play. Even when I am not throwing a party. (Okay, I'd admit it. I seldom throw parties.) The user-interface is great.
What I like, especially, is the ability to add tunes to my party shuffle from the library.
Of course, I suspect there may be ever a slight decrease in my productivity when I am party-ing with iTunes while working... :-)
Disclaimer: I'm trying out iTunes on my Windows XP machine, but I suspect there will not be any difference on iTunes for Mac.

Stay tuned for the Supernova pre-party in June!

Party like it's 1892

Party like it's 1892 01/05/2005 10:28 PM
Party like it's 1892! "Executive power and patronage have been used to corrupt our legislatures and defeat the will of the people, and plutocracy has thereby been enthroned upon the ruins of democracy."* In the late 1800s, the Popul ist Party, or People's Party, formed to merge the Farmers Alliance message of economic empowerment for growers with the Knights of Labor's movement to check the growing power and corrupt practices of big business (along with the Greenbacks Party critiques of monetary policy). With a strong base in the midwest and south, the party earned 9% of the 1892 popular vote, won the presidential electoral votes of four states (not to mention electing 10 congressmen, 5 senators, 3 governors, and 1,500 state legislators). However the party's power quickly faded as the Democratic Party co-opted much of the Populist platform while internal disputes culminated in the Populists placing the Dems' 1896 nominee at the head of their own ticket. Nevertheless, the populist movement's influence continued to be felt through various 20th century reforms including direct election of senators, presidential term limits, and abandonment of the gold standard.

Sorry I missed the party

Sorry I missed the party 05/14/2004 12:17 PM

While evereyone else was out partying last night (Acteva also had a party) I was working to change the world - bringing DLAs to the masses.

More on my efforts later.

But for now - congrats to Ev and Jason.  I wonder if Orkut was there?

Smells like 1999.

Last night I attended the Blogger relaunch party at SF’ 26Mix. It was a pretty cool bash - and I mean the food, the music and the locale were pretty trendy. What struck me was the names and faces from the past, those who had become party regulars were all in full force. Jay Shellen, Evan Williams and a whole bunch of Blogger gang were in attendance, and so were the folks behind Craigslist, Newsmonster, Feedster and of course the queen of valley gossip, Chris Nolan. James and James of AmIhotornot were in attendance as well.

It reminded me of the parties in 1999 when the dotcom madness was in full swing. Lately I have been getting more of these party invites and there seems to be a certain buzz, back in the air. The rentals in San Francisco are inching up slowly, the traffic on Highway 101 is turning into a weebit of a nightmare, and even magazines are trotting out some familiar names. My magazine for instance has a story on Mary “Queen of the Net” Meeker, Nick Denton of Gawker Media. and a couple of others. Wired is having a NextFest. What makes it more like 1999, is the fact that a whole lot of journalists are talking about “blogging” as their salvation (which may or may not be true!) and quitting their jobs to do something with “blogs.” Back in the day, they were talking about web as their escape key. I think the hype machine around blogs is in high gear, and while it might make some like Rafat Ali or Nick Denton very rich, there is little or no hope for many of us.

In short, it smells and feels like 1999. Let the party begin - free vodka and canapes, hell I am not complaining.

Party Like It’s 1996!

Party Like It’s 1996! 07/06/2004 01:57 AM
I’m a major admirer of Safari and of its primary author Dave Hyatt. But a couple of Dave’s recent notes have caused me serious discomfort. Here he notes that Safari will support a new search= attribute on the input element, and here he discusses a new canvas element. Even more troubling is the opening phrase: Another extension we made to HTML is... I’d be really happy if someone explained to me how this is different from what Netscape and Microsoft did to each other so irritatingly back in 1996 (<MARQUEE> anyone?). What the W3C and Web Standards Project were created to stop? [By the way, there are namespaces, there are class= attributes, there are legitimate ways to extend HTML.] Someone please explain to me why I’m wrong, because I really hope this isn’t what it looks like.

Welcome Mail.app to the Party

Welcome Mail.app to the Party 04/09/2004 04:05 PM
I have on several occasions dissed the Mac OS X email client “Mail.app” fairly heavily in this space. I finally got myself smoothly integrated with the Sun VPN, and I must report that the latest release of Mail.app is now handling both my email lives (Sun and Textuality) smoothly, efficiently, and with no fuss. The spam filtering is failing a bit under the pressure, but is still pretty darn good; and the filtering and styling and threading and so on is really about all you could wish for. Another reason to think about migrating to OS X.

Why danah didn't come to the party

Why danah didn't come to the party 02/12/2004 03:20 PM

Here's the picture that offended so many of the leading bloggers. Man these people are seriously uptight. Marc says he never pulled it. Right on. [Scripting News]

The cool thing about being at a conference where many of the people attacking you are here in meatspace - is that you can clarify and find out "what the hell it was that offended people do much?"

So when I talked to Cory (just now) he informed me that what really ticked off danah - was that the photo didn't necessarily present an appealing an environment for women to go and party.

The funny thing is that when I brought up danah's complaints to these women who were at the party (admittedly NOT from our industry or world) they broke out in laughter!  "What sort of hangup does she have?" they asked.

I expalined that danah was a young, brilliant researcher - who had worked with V-Day and other women's issues - folks understood why danah night be upset.

But that doesn't mean that women don't have fun at parties doing all sorts of crazy things.  In fact I could have SWORN I saw danah last night...... [oooops I'm telling no tales....]

I'm just saying I posted that photo for folks to 'think' that the party would be fun. If danah didn't, then guess what? - she didn't have to come.  And she didn't.

:-)

Mad Hatter's Party

Mad Hatter's Party 04/21/2004 04:56 AM

Online security industry is a sprawling mad hatter's party.  Blackhats moving about silently, whitehats screaming their lungs out, everyone having their tea and then racing to the next set of chairs and tea set.  It all started as a  nice tea party but money started pouring in and it has never been the same since.

It used to be that blackhats did most of pulling rabbit of their hats and whitehats did most of the clapping and finger pointing.  Now whitehats can't wait so they started pulling rabbits of their hats themselves and do all the clapping as well.  Meanwhile, blackhats are getting lazier because they can just watch whitehats do all the rabbit pulling instead of doing the work themselves.  Rabbit pulling is fun if it's a hobby, but is hard work when it's a job.

At this tea set, the rabbit's name is Phish which is turning out to be a big hit at the party.  More tea?

Republic or Empire

Republic or Empire 08/19/2004 09:40 AM
  • Gary Hart: The New Caesars. The United States cannot be simultaneously republic and empire. For evidence, see Rome (circa 65 B.C.). We salute the flag of the United States of America "and the Republic for which it stands." Since the time of the Greek city-states, republics have shared certain immutable qualities: civic virtue or citizen participation, popular sovereignty, resistance to corruption (by special interests) and a sense of the common good. Empires consolidate power in the hands of the few; seek expanded influence, by force if necessary; export centralized administrations to foreign lands; dictate terms to lesser powers, and manage foreign occupied peoples for their own political and commercial advantage.

    The Republic of Texas Argument

The Republic of Texas Argument 04/14/2004 11:52 PM

Heh... I worked 16+ hours today (sucks to be in a suit that long), but got this email in my inbox from a buddy today and figured I'd share it. Sort of tells the "why Texans think so much of their state" story a little differently:

    From: The People of Texas
    To: All Concerned Voters

With the presidential campaign in full swing, Texas has a message for all those complainers out there. After seeing the whiners, the folks from Texas have decided that we might just take matters into our own hands.

    Here is our solution:

    1. Let Kerry become President of the United States (all 49 states).
    2. George W. Bush becomes the President of the Republic of Texas.

So what does Texas have to do to survive as a Republic?

NASA is in Houston, Texas. We will control the space industry.

We refine over 85% of the gasoline in the United States.

Defense Industry - we have over 65% of it. The term "Don't mess with Texas," will take on a whole new meaning

Oil - we can supply all the oil that the Republic of Texas will need for the next 300 years. Yankee states - sorry about that.

Natural Gas - again we have all we need and it's too bad about those northern states. Mr. Kerry will have to figure a way to keep them warm.

Computer Industry - we currently lead the nation in producing computer chips and communications: Small places like HP, Texas Instruments, Dell Computer, EDS, Raytheon, National Semiconductor, Motorola, Intel, AMD, Atmel, Applied Materials, Ball Semiconductor, Dallas Semiconductor, Delphi, Nortel, Alcatel, Etc,Etc. The list goes on and on.

Health Centers - We have the largest centers for Cancer research, the best burn centers and the top trauma units in the world and other large health planning centers.

We have enough colleges to keep us going: Texas A&M, U.T., Texas Tech, Rice, SMU, University of Houston, Baylor, UNT, Texas Women's University, etc. Ivy grows better in the south anyway.

We have a ready supply of workers. Just open the border when we need some more.

We control a good portion of the paper industry, plastics, insurance, etc.

In case of a foreign invasion, we have the Texas National Guard and the Texas Air National Guard. We don't have an army, but since everybody down here has at least six rifles and a pile of ammo, we can raise an army in 24 hours if we need it. If the situation really gets bad, we can always call Department of Public Safety and ask them to send over a couple of Texas Rangers.

We are totally self sufficient in beef, poultry, hogs and vegetable produce and everybody down here knows how to cook them so that they taste good. Don't need any food from anywhere else.

This just names a few of the items that will keep the Republic of Texas in good shape. There isn't a thing out there that we need and don't have.

Now to the rest of the United States under President Kerry: Since you won't have the refineries to get gas for your cars, only President Kerry will be able to drive around in his 9 mile per gallon SUV. The rest of the United States will have to walk or ride bikes.

You won't have any TV as the space center in Houston will cut off your satellite communications. You won't have any natural gas to heat your homes but since Mr. Kerry has predicted global warming, you will not need the gas.

    Signed,

    The People of Texas
