07/16/2004 11:46 AMTyler Emerson says:
With today's film release of the feature film "I, Robot,"
the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence has launced a
new website, "3 Laws Unsafe", to explore the non-fictional problems
presented by Isaac Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics. The Three Laws
are widely known and are often taken seriously as reasonable solutions
for guiding future AI. But are they truly reasonable?

Random Robot News
01/05/2004 05:33 PMOver the last couple of weeks I've accumulated lots of robot news
that I haven't had time to post. To help get things rolling again, I
offer these two items. First
Phillip M. Torrone sent us
links to his photos of the Sony QRIO and AIBO robots.
Meanwhile, Ghassan
Abdallah sent this link to the ERobot CCMP Project, a student
effort to create a Linux-based robot controlled over wireless LAN
technology that includes audio, video, GPS, and other sensors.

Robot Turkey News
12/02/2003 12:23 AMThe Thanksgiving holiday is here and with it comes our annual news
update on
turkey robots. MIT's Spring
Turkey biped is still the most advanced turkey robot around, even if
it is getting a bit old. But for the most realistic appearance and
behavior, we'd have to go with Custom Robotic Wildlife's
robot Turkey. The
Turkey is autonomous and has interchangable skins; just the thing to
assist hunters in killing biological turkeys (and game wardens trying
to stop
hunters from killing the live turkeys)

New Years Robot News Round Up
01/03/2005 07:34 PMI've had several robot story submissions collecting dust over the last
few days. The
Swirling Brain submitted a NASA press
release about their plans to build a 50
foot robot for a New Year's day parade and a related Slashdot
story. Several folks submitted a CNN
story about EcoBot II,
the fly eating robot, which we've reported on in the past. And
Sebastian Tyl submitted an Ananova
story about KAIST's
HUBO robot, a Korea humanoid robot similar to the Japanese ASIMO.
Rabbit Robot Walks into the News
Rabbit Robot Walks into the News
04/18/2005 06:14 PMUniversity of Michigan researcher Jessy Grizzle has made
the news again
with his dynamically walking robot named Rabbit.
A CNN
technology story showcases the robot, which has no actual feet. The
legs end in narrow tips to make sure the robot doesn't rely on big,
flat
feet to keep from falling. For more than five years, the Rabbit team
has
worked on a developing dynamic walking algorithms that will allow the
robot to move, walk, and even run like humans do.
"The concept of
stability is reduced to two formulas", say Grizzle, who hopes the
work will not only lead to walking robots but to bionic legs that can
automatically match the gait of their wearer. For more information
including research papers and video of the robot in action, visit
Jessy
Grizzle's
bipedal locomotion website.

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PMYesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were
whini
ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting
their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize
that going to the movies is a
social experience. It's not just
about the content (though, that is important), but the overall
experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go --
even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap
DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to
entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that
story pointed to an article in China noting that
this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done.
After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made
going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience,
putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved
the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made
some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away
from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in
Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.
A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?
A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?
12/18/2003 12:58 PMIt took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be
able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated,
that some researchers are giving up on that idea and
using
Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs.
However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the
upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out
how to make a
robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at
points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking
start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a
slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a
start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the
robot run.
