Web magazines

Web magazines 12/26/2004 07:03 PM

Before weblogs ruled the realm, a typical way to publish content online was in a Web magazine format. Suck, Feed, Netly News, Smug, Stating the Obvious, etc. Sites like Salon, The New Yorker, Slate, and even most online newspapers publish in the magazine format, but sites like The Morning News and McSweeney's Internet Tendency are more culturally similar to those early Web magazines (in sensibility and because there's no offline component). Are there any other sites that you read that are still publishing regularly in this format?

Magazines Are So Last Millennium 12/05/2003 01:55 PM
A new study in Europe has found that the internet has passed magazines for media consumption, though newspapers and TV still are ahead of the internet. TV is ahead by a long shot, but people who use the web admit that they tend to watch less TV. I'm sure similar studies have been done in the US, where it's likely that internet as a percentage of media consumption is even higher.

Adult magazines screwed by the Internet?

Adult magazines screwed by the Internet? 11/10/2003 11:24 PM
Interesting AP story about the web's impact on the economics of adult print magazines:
After 35 years in the business of titillating and offending, pornographer Al Goldstein says his magazine can't compete anymore. The audience is just as large, he says, but the Internet has transformed the product and its delivery. Just over a month ago, Goldstein stopped publishing Screw magazine and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, giving him a chance to cut costs, relaunch the magazine and refocus attention on his Web site.

Goldstein said circulation woes throughout the field show "we are an anachronism; we are dinosaurs; we are elephants going to the bone cemetery to die. ... The delivery system has changed, and we have to change with it if we want to survive."

After the dot-com bust, they immediately slim down." I would like to buy this and bury it in a titanium safe, and text-message some children 50 years from now with instructions on how to open it.

CAN-SPAM Big Bust

CAN-SPAM Big Bust 08/06/2004 06:04 AM
MX Logic, a firm who has been tracking CAN-SPAM complience, says, "Get a good spam filter, because despite federal law, it's not going away anytime soon."

The numbers don't lie: CAN-SPAM is a bust. Compliance with CAN-SPAM has fallen to a new low, according to recent data collected by MX Logic.

In July, compliance fell for the first time under one percent to a measly 0.54 percent of all unsolicited commercial mail the company sampled during the month.

The Denver-based firm has been tracking compliance with CAN-SPAM since the federal law went on the books in January. Through April, MX Logic's numbers remained stable, with about three percent of spam messages complying with the law's requirements, which range from verifiable return addresses to measures consumers and businesses can use to opt out of mailing lists. In May and June, however, the number slipped to one percent.

"Now it's been halved," said Steve Ruskin, a senior analyst at MX Logic. "No one's really sure what's going on, but it's clear that CAN-SPAM isn't a threat to spammers. They're just ignoring it."

To Boston by bus or bust

To Boston by bus or bust 05/11/2004 01:22 PM

Usually when I go home to Boston to visit my family, I spring for the Acela train because you get guaranteed seating and it's fairly fast (~3.5 hours). But it's also very expensive, nearly $200 round-trip. So this past weekend I resorted to my old friend, the Peter Pan bus. And would you believe it, if you purchase your ticket online in advance (all you seem to need is one day before you depart), it's $30 round-trip. $30! Ok, they stick you with a $4 fee for "will call pick-up" but still, that's nearly six trips to Boston for the price of one train trip. And both ways, my journey was four hours exactly. Sure, it wasn't as pleasant as the train, and there's no plug for your laptop, and they showed the movie The Recruit both ways, but what do you expect for that price? I'm going to take the bus more often, I just can't resist a bargain!
