It's great to be able to time-shift media, but more and more lately I
wish I could media-shift as well. Consider this
fifty-minut
e interview1 with Jim Gray, on MSDN's Channel 9. Why
haven't I watched it yet? Not because I lack interest, or time, but
because the content isn't available in a format that suits the
kind
of time I have. In this case, the format would be audio, and the
kind of time would be walking-, jogging-, or driving-time.

Connecting Devices with Web Services
05/04/2004 04:41 PMInstalling and configuring network-connected devices is not always a
simple task. However, by extending the benefits of Web services to a
rich and diverse set of devices, Microsoft and industry leaders are
reducing the complexity of device-based integration. The Web services
architecture offers a standardized mechanism for devices to send and
receive information over a network without needing to know what
operating system or application software is on the other side.

Microsoft Talking To The Recording
Industry About Copy Protection
09/17/2004 02:31 PMIt looks like Cory Doctorow's talk to Microsoft about
why
copy protection is bad for everyone -- including the recording
industry, customers, and Microsoft itself -- didn't have much of an
impact. Microsoft is now
in talks with the
recording industry about how to build copy protection into their
next generation operating system to make sure you can't actually do
what you want with the music you buy. Of course, this is likely to be
an expensive waste of time that will only annoy legitimate buyers by
causing problems. The people who really want to copy music will
figure out workarounds. The large counterfeiters will already have
big workarounds, so it won't impact their business at all. The only
people impacted will be people who want to do perfectly legitimate
things with the music they bought, but find out they're blocked
because Microsoft and the recording industry doesn't trust them.

Lansing PL Is Shifting!
Lansing PL Is Shifting!
04/10/2005 12:47 AMAnother one of my member libraries has been shifting like crazy
lately, but I just recently realized how far. The Lansing Public Library
started with blogs, four of them to be exact, which of
course gives them RSS feeds. (Well, when Blogger is working these
days, it does, but that’s not LPL’s fault.)
Then
Kelli Staley emailed me that they’ve been doing the instant
messaging thing, too. Since October. Aaron, they’re drinking
your Kool-Aid! I especially like that they’re using icons on
their pages to indicate presence (online versus offline), which is
IM’s big strength. Kelli wrote, “Our library is on 2
levels, so we have separate screen names for different age groups.
AskLPLAdult, AskLPLTeen, AskLPLYouth (we're on Yahoo &
AOL).” She went on to note that a few weeks ago, they received
IMs from students in Florida and Ohio. Those two requests are from
students who couldn’t IM their local library. Can your students
IM yours?
But LPL didn’t stop there, as the next message
from Kelli illustrated:
“Lansing Public
Library has partnered with the office of Illinois State Treasurer Judy
Baar Topinka to offer a new service called E-Pay. The E-Pay program
was launched by Topinka’s office in 2000 under a state master
services agreement that is available for all counties and local
governments in Illinois to participate in.
‘We are pleased to help move the library into the 21st
century.’ Assistant Library Director Patricia Higgins
said, ‘Our E-Pay electronic payment service will provide greater
convenience to the community and increase the services offered by the
library.’
The Library’s E-Pay service has started with fee
payment and donations to Friends of Lansing Public Library. E-Pay will
allow you to make your payments over the Internet with cardholders of
MasterCard, American Express and Discover card brands. A transaction,
or user fee, is added to the payment amount for the convenience of the
Internet service. The state and local participants who use this
program do not receive any revenue from the convenience
fee.”
It’s not PayPal, but
it’s a heckuva step in the right direction. Reciprocal borrowers
with outstanding fines and fees are even eligible to use this service
- how cool is that? Keep up the great work, LPL!

04/13/2005 10:58 PMMicrosoft today began to realign its Enterprise & Partner Group (EPG)
sales teams in the United States as a part of significant investments
planned over the next fiscal year. The realignment is designed to help
Microsoft meet customer demand for a superb local relationship, access

the initiative, Microsoft will increase the size of its U.S. sales
force, adding up to 10 percent new enterprise sales and product

12/22/2004 01:49 AMI've recently jumped ship, from the Playstation 2 to the xbox,
mostly for the insane hackability of the xbox (the xbox is basically
wide open now and can be used in all sorts of ways, most notably as a media server).
Now that I'm using the xbox for more than a few minutes per week,
I'm wondering what games I should have aside from the usual obvious
suspects for first person shooters and sports games.
What are some good simple fun group games that even non-gamers can
use? So far I've only found a Trival Pursuit game that's so-so. If you
know of any good 2-4 player games that anyone can enjoy, I'd really
appreciate if you dropped me a
line.

Support For Network Access Protection
Technology From Microsoft
07/13/2004 03:32 PMIn his keynote today at the Microsoft® Worldwide Partner Conference,
Mike Nash, corporate vice president for Security Business and
Technology Unit at Microsoft Corp., announced support from more than
25 industry partners for its Network Access Protection, an extensible
standards-based technology that will enable users to more securely
access their corporate network. In addition to enhancing the security
for user access, the Network Access Protection technology will provide
a more secure solution designed to reduce the complexity of network
access for IT administrators. Available in an update release
(code-named "R2") of Windows Server (TM) 2003, Network Access
Protection technology will deliver a uniform method for detecting the
"health state" of a client attempting to connect to a network,
restricting the access until compliance to policy is validated and
updating the client to current security policy levels.
