Help fight disease and search for
extraterrestrial life
06/17/2005 05:54 PMDistributed computing involves aggregating the power of several
computers for a collaborative computational task. This involves
breaking down complex computing problems and running them on several
internet-connected independent computers at the same time. Many
researchers are currently conducting demanding experiments in this way
with help from hundreds of thousands, or sometimes millions, of others
at home.
Folding@Home is a distributed computing project that studies protein
folding, misfolding, aggregation and related diseases developed by the
Pande group in the Chemistry Department at Stanford University. By
using large-scale distributed computing, this group has been able to
study protein folding for the first time and examine folding-related
diseases. Those interested in helping the project can download and
run the client software available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
(Spymac's own Folding@Home team is number 11331.)
SETI@home is an experiment that searches for extraterrestrial life
using distributed computing. Based at the University of California at
Berkeley, the SETI (Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence) project
allows participants' computers to download and analyse radio telescope
data. SETI@home is available for download for Windows, Mac OS X,
Linux/x86 and Solaris/SPARC.
Einstein@Home was developed to search data from the Laser
Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory and GEO 600
gravitational wave observatory for signals coming from extremely
dense, rapidly rotating stars. Lead by Bruce Allen of the University
of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Einstein@Home uses distributed computing to
search for gravity wave-emitting compact stars and is available for
download for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux/x86 and Solaris/SPARC.
FightAIDS@home, run by the Olson Laboratory at The Scripps Research
Institute, is the first biomedical distributed computing project ever
launched. Those running FightAIDS@home can assist fundamental
research to discover new drugs by using the structural biology of
AIDS. FightAIDS@home is currently only available to Windows users.
evolution@home is attempting to uncover genetic causes for extinction
of species. Allowing "your computer to do meaningful evolutionary
research while you have a cup of coffee or enjoy the weekend,"
evolution@home is different than other distributed computing projects
in that it requires that the user provide the input and submit the
results. evolution@home is available for Windows and Mac OS users.

isk.harvard.edu/ Welcome to Your Disease Risk, the
source on prevention. If you were looking for Your Cancer Risk,
don’t worry. You’re in the right place. We’ve simply expanded.
Now, in addition to cancer, you can find out your risk of four other
important diseases and, as always, get personalized tips for
preventing them. Your Disease Risk is an educational website developed
by the Harvard Center for Cancer Prevention. Based at the Harvard
School of Public Health, the Center promotes prevention as the primary
approach to controlling cancer and other chronic diseases.
The Your Disease Risk site began as the Harvard Cancer Risk Index, a
pen and paper cancer risk assessment tool first put together in the
mid 1990’s by the Risk Index Working Group at Harvard University. In
1999, the Risk Index was adapted to the Web as Your Cancer Risk. Then,
to give even greater emphasis to the importance of healthy behaviors,
Your Cancer Risk was expanded to include assessments for heart
disease, stroke, diabetes, and osteoporosis. The expanded site was
renamed Your Disease Risk and offers the follows risks assessments
online:
What's Your Cancer Risk? What's Your Diabetes Risk? What's Your Heart Disease Risk? What's Your Osteoporosis Risk? What's Your Stroke Risk? This will be

A disease in the Breedster ecosystem...
04/25/2004 07:14 AMThere's so much I could write about Breedster if I had
the time. I could write about the interesting way it handles new
members (you have to put work in to getting food and finding a partner
before you can create a new user account and plug someone into it). I
could talk about the possibilities of gaming / message-board overlaps
and some of the slightly-abortive work that Cal and I did on the
not-open-for-business The Mafia
Game site. I could talk about the gaming aspects of maintaining a
community and the congruence between gaming rule-sets and political
rule-sets. I could write about lots of things. There's loads of stuff
I could talk about that's interesting (to me) here. Instead I'm just
going to report that a friend of mine has just contracted a disease in
the game - they've released an infestation that can affect your bug's
digestive tract and make it harder for you to build up enough strength
to fornicate. Watch out everyone, there's infected poop about. This is
a disease of the colon that could (and please forgive me for this) run
and run!

Test for Alzheimer's Disease gets closer
03/14/2005 04:52 PMAlzheimer’s Disease. The name strikes fear into those who hear
it, as anyone who has watched a loved one suffer the ravages of this
disease can attest. A neurodegenerative disease that destroys memory
and cognitive function, it destroys an individual’s mind and
personality through the build up of protein plaques in the brain.
Currently, the only way to definitively diagnose it is through a
post-mortem. This edition of Science.Ars has news on what could become
a reliable test for the disease.
In addition, there's news of monkeys working their mind control
over robotic limbs, more on the coxib controversy, and other nuggets
